What's in a Name?
Picking a name for your character can be challenging. On heavily-populated servers, it seems like sometimes all the good names have been taken for a long time. So, what's a good name?First, it should be short. I personally dislike having to type some character's name five times because it's some highly-bizarre spelling. I'm talking to you, Qystvzxeriqziski. The best names are both a known word/name and one that matches your character. For instance, an undead shadow priest named Void is an awesome name. Or a gnome mage named Itsy or Midge. But these names often go very fast. You might try building a character on a new server with a very low population to increase the odds in getting a great name.
You might name your character after a favorite character in a fantasy novel. A dwarf named Flint, or a Mage named Pug. A warrior named Tomas. Or a night elf named Legolas. You get the idea. These names also go quite fast, but you may stumble across a name you like that's still available.
You might also name your character after an every day object with a simple name. I have a female rogue on Gorefiend named Floss, named after the dental floss that was sitting on my desk when I created the character. I also have on Gorefiend, a dwarf paladin named Shuffle, after the iPod shuffle shortly after it was announced by Apple.
On the new servers we're using for our WoW Insider characters, I've simply made a character on each called Dab, for my initials. Because they are new servers, this 3-letter combo was available. Lastly, you might try just hitting the randomize button in the character gen screen until you find a name you like. I did this for one of my very first WoW characters and ended up with a night elf named Amal.
What are your favorite character names and methods for generating them?

Good characters names, IMHO, should never be based on already established characters. If I have to see another Gandalf, Legolas or spellings like that, or things out of the real world, like Budlightbeer the Orc Warrior, I'll puke.
Make something crazy up that sounds fun and is appropriate. Use Indian style names for Tauren, or spoofs on the cow thing that aren't so obvious.
The best names are the ones that are more fantasy and less real world.

I used Malff, cuz my buddy had a druid named Ralf. We are quite the pair!
I had a Tauren Hunter and hit randomize, it came out with Mull. It had a nice ring to it, one of the NPC's are named Mull as well - but when chosing my pets I would use a name complimentary to "Mull" - I had a wolf named Berry, and a Bat named Itover.
I was going to level a Gnome Mage that had mining/engineering - I named him "Tinker" - but I didnt really like playing alliance, so I scrapped him.

Yeah, just to echo the above commenter, stealing a name from another source is ass-retarded.

I find wikipedia a good source for good names. I'm a warlock and searched up that, found it was called vardlokkur earlier in northern Europe. So that's me: Vardlokkur :)

My friends and I just took our significant others' names and changed them to include 'wee'. My wife's name is Kortney so I'm Korwee. Besides that, I generally like to make up my own name, but that can take a lot of time when the creativity just isn't flowing.

I have a fantasy character that has followed me through my pen and paper career. His name is Longwinn Stomptoe. He's my gnome mage character on Alleria and he's the epitome of what I'd always envisioned him to be. The naming convention is my own and I proudly boast an entire family and history for him.

Most of my characters are named after Star Wars chars. I guess you can tell I don't play on a RP server. My Tauren is called Artoo and his pet is called Vader.
Zeus Dec 6th 2005 3:27PM
Heh, on Kel'Thuzad I have chars with the names Reaver, William, and Subsonic. I guess I was lucky to start on the server early.
PrincessKate Dec 6th 2005 4:50PM
I just ran into a naming problem. When I starting playing WoW it was kind of a joke for me, my boyfriend let me create a character (I had never played computer games that weren't educational before). So I named myself PrincessKate - and it worked, for a while. Just recently I started a new character and the system wouldn't let me use PrincessKate, the whole title thing. So I lamely feel back on TehKate, what a nerd I am. I do like the Star Wars theme idea.

Most of my characters are named after Goetic demons (or fallen angels, whatever), just as a convention. Cept my druid. I couldn't pass up Leaflet.

We chose a theme with the guild I was a part of during Closed Beta. At the time, NASA had just sent a probe to Saturn. The name of the probe was Cassini-Huygen http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/cassini/main/index.html
and well, my mage was born, Cassini. Huygen has also been used as a Troll and a NE Warrior (both actually)
Hignaki Dec 6th 2005 8:06PM
Many moons ago (okay...6 years) I created the name Hignaki. Everything, EVERYTHING you search for on google with Hignaki is mine, I've checked. Due to D&D and such, I have ended up with a full history and future for Hignaki, and I intend to keep it that way.
I am proud of my original name.

I used google translator and came up with 'Spitzohren' for my NE hunter...
That's German for 'Pointy Ears' :)
I like long names cuz they let your buds come with nick names...ie Spitz...
KellyDot, Sookie, kelly, Hepher Dec 6th 2005 11:12PM
It took me 6 months of patient waiting till I got my real name "kelly" ...When I went to make my new toon on gilneas the night I started my account it was taken, I was so mad that I added that person to my friends list and went ahead and made kellyDot the mage after 6 months of NEVER seeing Kelly logged in the name was gone from my list, hoping the character got deleted I tried making a gnome lock named kelly and it worked!!! I was so excited haha! I also have "smellyKelly" the undead mage, Sookie the dwarf priest, Totts the gnome rogue, Lighturple the NE hunter (named from a saturday night live skit) and hepher the tauren shaman
Celestina Dec 10th 2005 9:20AM
I had fun naming my main... I grew up *hating* my second given name (yes, I mean IRL), but when I slapped "Celestina" on my mage, it was perfect!
So growing up with a name friends make fun of finally paid off. hehe

My first Tauren was Islero, named for the most famous bull in Spanish bullfighting history, and also for the Lamborghini by the same name. His pet is named Urraco, also a Lamborghini, and also a Spanish bull.
I named my main (53 warrior) "Merak," which was a Maserati sports car and is also a star in the Ursa Major constellation. A Maserati also loaned its name to my Shaman alt, "Khamsin," which is an Egyptian wind.
My Troll priest is named "Jibbajabba." If you have to ask, you don't deserve to know. :-P

I have found that writing something backwards works suprisingly well. Ex. Blizzard becomes Drazzilb (give or take a few letters and you have the name of my Paladin Dazil. :)
And never use special characters like ?????? etc. You can use them, but you won't be able to post on the forums with that character. Found out that the hardway with my mage El?na (since Eluna was taken). :P
Dr. Woo Dec 7th 2005 8:37AM
"You can use them, but you won't be able to post on the forums with that character."
The forums are terrible. They need SERIOUS reworking.
Shynnee Dec 7th 2005 9:38AM
When naming my Rogue I browsed a Celtic dictionary, I love the Celtic language and the background of their people. I chose Shynnee, which means fox (or silver fox). Being female I thought "fox" would be good for me, plus the fox is considered stealthy and quick like the rogue. So Shynnee was born.
I have a Druid thats name is Kirrya and Kirry means beautiful from that same dictionary. A mage named Miasoleil (my sunshine).
