Ventrillo for Mac released
You may love it, you may hate it, but if you're in a guild chances are you've used it -- voice chat. One of the most popular programs for voice chat is Ventrillo, and finally a version that works with Macs has been released. Revel in the new-found knowledge that Konan, the uber level 60 tank in your guild sounds like a 13 year old who's voice is cracking, because that's exactly what he is!
I'm not crazy about voice chat because the chat tends toward the inane and reminds me of a phone call that never ends, but it will increase your effectiveness in team situations, such as taking on Molten Core or fighting in the battlegrounds. I'm willing to use it for that, but I keep it turned off otherwise.

I have installed the client and tried to use it with my guild's Ventrillo server, but I was greeted with the message:
"This server uses GSM version 6.x. To use the mac client you need to the Speex codec."
Has anyone looked into setting this up on a server? The guy who did it said that in order to do this all the PC users might need to use beta clients--and experience with this? I'd love to be included in my guild's voice chats.

I haven't looked at the Ventrillo client, but I've been using TeamSpeex for the past couple of months: http://www.savvy.nl/blog/
TeamSpeex works so well connecting to one of the WoW guilds I belong to, that I went and bought my own Teamspeak hosting plan for my local friends group. TeamSpeex is still in beta, but it's been rock solid for me.

I used the Mac client and it annoyingly won't work using "push to talk" in the background, making it frustratingly necessary to play in windowed mode and click back and forth to use it. Unless anyone has any tips!

Posters #1 and #3 need to go read the Ventrilo forums, both answers are presented there. But to summarize. #1 - Please have your server admin change the codec on the server, yes it works fine for PC people. #3 - Enable Access for Assisted Devices in Unversal Access (System Preferences).

I had to ask two of my frequently used servers to convert to Speex (really simple.. only have to change one to two lines in their server .ini) (http://www.ventrilo.com/forums/showpost.php?p=37675&postcount=5) and it worked great in both instances. No loss of voice quality, and now I can chat with my PC buddies.
