$40 server transfers?

As you can see, I am spread across three servers... I have 3 horde characters on the two PvP servers, and 4 alliance characters on the Normal server. I would love to be able to combine my horde characters onto the Akama server, but Blizzard still isn't offering open server transfers.
The game has been out over a year now, why isn't this a feature already in place? Blizzard keeps saying they are going to allow it at some point, but when? The $40 proposed fee sounds fair to me, since it is a one time shot and they do want to limit how often it happens - but the $40 should cover the ability to move all your characters on your account at least once. If they charge $40 for each character move, that would total to $200 if I wanted to move all my characters to our new WoWInsider guild servers!
How many servers are you spread across?

I have characters on three servers, but only play one actively. I wouldn't mind being able to consolidate all of my characters onto one server, but $40 per character? No thanks. For some reason, I seem to remember hearing at one point that they were looking at allowing these transfers once the expansion was released, but I have no idea where I read that.

We've split up our horde/alliance characters across 2 servers, so we're okay on servers, but I have my main character on my husband's account and he has one character on mine and that's driving us nuts. We'd be happy to pay $40 (even $80, I guess) to transfer those characters to the correct account.
I suppose with leveling services and such, transferring between accounts is more problematic. WoW support has told us that it will be available at some point.

why are you spread out and want to move now? sounds like bad planning. it's still unclear what the exact rules will be right? like moving from pvp to / from pve and such.

Well, it was a bit of poor planning on my part. My coworker convinced me to move to Shadowmoon to try horde/pvp... He quit after about a week on the server :). I continued to play up to level 30ish, but then took a 2 month break. Now that we are starting over on a new server, I would love to transfer my level 30 over to get the guild started.

I'm in the same boat. I started a Tauren Shaman on Destromath(PvP) almost a year ago... and yes im a slacker, i only got up to 43. But now i am on Silver Hand(RP), and i am enjoying it very much and have a few friends on there, so i play there all the time now. I would like to have Horde toon at a higher level along with my Dwarf Priest... but i don't to have to do i all over again.
I would gladly pay $20 to transfer my Horde toon over to my other server... come on Blizzard, here's another way to make buttloads of money out of us.

I'm pretty much all on one server (Bloodhoof).
Why don't you guys list your mains on the site somewhere? Would be nice to associate each blogger with their toon.

One of the problems is that cheap transfers encourage account selling. There's also the reputation factor - you don't want players server-hopping because they get a bad rep for ninjaing, etc. Keep your ninjas off my server please.
You can't have horde and alliance characters on the same server either.

I have characters on eight or nine servers. I started several new characters to help with various friends, but kept going back to my main; now I want to transfer my main to join a guild a few friends set up, rather than levelling a newbie again, but I've heard nothing of European server transfer yet.

Mark I think you are wrong when you said "You can't have horde and alliance characters on the same server either." My fiance - who dragged me into playing - has a 60 undead warrior and a 22 gnome warlock both on stormrage...He just can't send stuff to himself through the mail because of the faction difference.
jennie Dec 14th 2005 1:25PM
#8 - You can't have both on a PvP server (including RP-PvP), but you can on RP and PvE.
Josh Owens Dec 14th 2005 1:51PM
Yes, Jennie is 100% correct. Not that it matters much on PvP anymore...
To Mark's other comment, I was talking about server to server transfers, not moving characters to different accounts. That is something I am going to cover later :).

$40, are you kidding me? Players should be able to transfer from server to server whenever they want free of charge. You can't tell me spending 40 bucks makes it worth it. There's no cost for Blizz to recoup to do it, and there's really no reason to "keep it to a minimum". Allow it to happen, and social solidarity will keep it from becoming a nuisance.
As in all things, people want consumer choice. And if that means a Tauren leaving for greener pastures, than so be it. The only limit I would place on it would be that you could only move between servers of the same type. I.e. PVP to PVP, PVE to PVE, etc.

I know a lot of ppl that started the game at its inception and this is mostly the reason that they are looking at a transfer. I have 2 horde characters on LightBringer, which was the realm suggested when I started, but now most of my buddies are playing on Hyjal.. It would be great if we could all move to a new, less queued server..
PS. using "toon" to describe a character/avatar is the bane of my existance... this isn't Disney's ToonTown people!
jakk on the blackrock server Dec 14th 2005 6:58PM
is it possible to link all of their servers together into one big one with the collective processing power of all of them?
jakk on the blackrock server Dec 14th 2005 6:58PM
oh and which servers will the guilds be on?
PickyPants Dec 14th 2005 7:09PM
I have to agree with Mark.
I don't want server to server transfers going on. Someone can be a huge ninja bonerface and just keep switching around once his/her reputation is ruined.
Not to mention server load and its problems. I hate to sound like a dick, but just start a new character or plan better next time =p
boneyard Dec 15th 2005 7:39AM
as long as there is a heavy fee like 40 bucks, not many people will be jumping servers after getting a bad reputation. the fee has to be high exactly to prevent thing like that.
beyond that it's peoples own choice if they want to pay. the example given of moving a lvl 30 wouldn't be worth it for me, just level a new lvl 30. for a lvl 60 with some major gear is seems like an option if you want to move to some friends or such.
