Got the blues?

I admit I've fallen prey to it myself; the lure of the coveted blue or purple item. They have long, fancy names, they're usually very ornate, and they have multiple stat bonuses...most of the time.
But they're also hard to come by, and ridiculously expensive...at least at the auction houses I usually frequent. And, I've noticed on more than one occasion, they're really not all that much better than some green items of the same level. Sure, they might have one or two extra bonuses, but is that really worth a markup of several hundred (or thousand) gold, when you can get an item that's very nearly as nice for just a couple of gold...or less?
I have hung onto some blue items for longer than I would have been able to wear a comparable green one, but the money I spent on the blue items was still probably more than I would have spent just upgrading the item once or twice, and I've had a few green pieces of gear that have served me better & longer than some blues. Of course, there are exceptions, and there are other ways to get gear other than buying it at the auction house, but still...in these instances, is the color really worth the cash?

Until you hit level 60, I would recommend not buying any blue items from the AH. You can get plenty of good blue stuff from instances while you level. At 60, you have nowhere to go, so buying blues isn't at much of a waste.

It doesn't matter until 60. Blue drops are great at any level, but buying one pre-60 is pointless.

I almost never buy stuff at AH except for crafting and for my reroll so I do not mind wasting 2-3 gold in a new wand for my reroll
I never buy weapon or armor at the AH, item that drop from questing are enough. I'm a lvl 54 'lock and I'm almost stuff only with blue but I never bought one of theses at auction...
Now, purple item will come when I'll be 60 and farming MC with my guild... that's it.

Have bought blue items pre 60 and no regrets.

I think the best blue item I've ever had was the Electromagnetic Gigaflux Reactivator, the cloth "helmet" dropped by Thermaplugg at the end of Gnomeregan. The stats on it are excellent, and I think I wore it from 32 (the level it becomes available) up to about level 50, when I got the quest reward from the Sunken Temple quest, the Gemburst Circlet.

I honestly dont see whats so wrong with buying blues from the AH under level 60. Sometimes the really good items for a level is a rare drop and are rarely seen. like my weapon Swiftwind (http://www.thottbot.com/?i=4020). Its an excellent weapon, but hard to come by. its a non-quest item, so the only way to actually get it is by grinding. Bought mine on the AH at level 35 and still use it(now 43). I think buying blues from the AH are alright, just as long as A.they dont cost too much money, and B. A better one cannot be gotten thru quests.
