The Lag Monster Lives
Well, tonight might have just set a new record for lag in WoW; on every server I
was able to get on, the latency suddenly became
horrendous right around prime-time, resulting in people getting stuck in loot-mode for minutes at a time, pets taking
forever to appear when called (if they appeared at all), spikes that warped time forward untold moments, and all sorts
of other issues. When I was finally booted off the server, I was greeted with my old friend the
"authenticating" screen...we've been catching up on old times for almost a half hour now.
Blizzard does have a message on the official Realm Status forums that several realms are down to address problems, but some of the issues I mentioned were also seen on realms that are not on the list.
With the recent patch-to-patch-a-patch, everything had looked rosy for a few days; are we back to the dreaded post-holiday lag-fest? Did someone forget to feed the lag monster his sacrificial offering? Is millions of dollars in subscriptions per day not enough to run stable servers? Is this thing on? *tap*tap*

Even during non-prime times, my latency was nearly 2 seconds (not milliseconds). Whatever needs to be done, Blizzard needs to do it. A fabulous game is losing its luster due to very preventable causes...

Yeah, this is starting to bother me. I got the game about a month and a half ago, and I LOVE it. I play at least an hour every day, and it used to be "bing bang boom" signing on. But now, it ALWAYS says there's too many people on, and I get stuck with the "authenticating" or "handshaking" thing. ARG!

I know I wasn't able to log onto the servers in a reasonable ammount of time. That is when I decided to rather do some homework instead.

For the first time since I've been playing (1 month), I saw my latency go higher than 176 ms today. In fact, it hovered around 2400 ms, and eventually rose to 6700! This happened at least two separate times, around 7-8pm.
But the interesting part is that I was in a group of 3. The other two guys had no latency problems at all. They were miles away, on different connections. While I was cranked up above 5000 ms, I went over to another computer and, sure enough, my Internet connection was very slow. So I think I can blame my problems on Comcast cable today.
I hope that's the last time I see that! I died both times while I couldn't see who was hitting me...

Ah the Lag Monster. I first met the Lag Monster almost a decade ago on the most wonderful mud in the etherwebs, IgorMUD. The game is still active, and if you want to see the original Lag Monster, I belive the directions from center of town is e,e,e,e,e,u,e,n,w.
What memories...
