Spotlight on Murlocs?
Personally, I find those little
gurgling guys to be some of the most annoying monsters in the game, so I'm more than a little curious as to why
Blizzard has chosen to spotlight the culture of everyone's favorite stew ingredient in their feature Murlocs Revealed! The reason this makes me wonder is that there have been rumbles about Murlocs being added as the new playable race for the upcoming expansion; maybe the devs are trying to put a friendlier face on our (former?) fishy foes. Me, I'm a Furblog man, m'self...their battle cry is far less annoying.

Hmm. This stuff... could if read in a particular way infer that there is more to the murloc story and they are innocent refugees from powerful enemies . . . or you can infer that they are part of a deeper stygian plot. Or it can be inferred as a make-job to keep a writer busy.
I must admit if they are the new Alliance race I look forward to making toast and sardines of them in BG.

Personally, I would re-roll for Murlocs if it ever came to playing them. Especially if the rumoured "beserker/merc" class is real (mail class that uses fist weapons), or if we could play as a rogue or other cloth class.
However, it seems that this may just be a teaser to an underwater instance or new raid boss.
But you never know....

murlocs always have been a well known creature for wow, makes sense to give them some attention. they seem too simple to become a playable race.

Hmm... You know, murlocs as a playable race may not be so bad. We may find out a bit more about these fishboys... I've had some idea that murlocs may be inspired by the Morlocs of HG Wells' "The Time Machine". If you look at it close enough, the similarities go beyond the similarity in name: Both are vaguely humanoid creatures attracted to dark, damp places, and both utterly despise "regular" humans. Murlocs as a playable race means a bit more backstory on them, which could blow away or confirm this... (Jeez, I'm such a nerd...)

I despise Murlocs. I hate everything about them from their over-cranked aggro radi to the horrible drop rates on all quests from eyeballs in Westfall, sunfish and fins in Redridge all the way to Blue Pearls in the Vile Reef.
I suppose my annoyance with Murlocs is a tribute to the designers. The initial mild amusement upon first encountering them that has mutated to a deep-seated avoidance of all quests relating to them is a testament to the designers ability to create the NPC equivalent of nails on a chalkboard.

A strong H.P. Lovecraft influence here. They are similar to Deep Ones, the worshipers of Father Dagon and Mother Hydra! Ia Dagon! Ia Hydra! Ia CTHULHU!

Nah, this is just a hint at future underwater raid bosses. The Murloc model isn't humanoid enough to wear items and they don't speak orcish or alliance. Doesn't fit with the lore either. The new playable race is the Draenai. Deal with it.
Glad they're putting in more underwater stuff though. My warlock's underwater breathing spell will come in handy.

I seriously doubt they'd ever make murlocs a playable race, it seems like there are so many others that would be ahead of it.
And Burnsie gets cool nerd points :)

Agreed. The new playable race has got to be Draenei. I meant they're opening up Outland/Draenor for crying out loud! New start location anyone?
Burnsie Feb 23rd 2006 1:51PM
WOOT! Nerd points! YEAH!

Ha ha, props to Burnsie. I was thinking the exact same thing and this paragraph really knocked it in:
"Several indicators from the murlocs themselves point to the possibility that the fish-men are but worshippers or underlings of perhaps several deep-sea monstrosities that currently lie sleeping, or at least waiting, in the murky fathoms ? and even more disturbing, that the murlocs' emergence is an indication of their incipient awakening."
Awakening ancient deep-sea monstrisities? Murlocs worshipping them?? C-T-H-U-L-H-U.

oooohh that would be soooo cool if they had some deep sea monsters pop up! That to me is better than ANY dragon. :)

You can also get blue pearls much easier from the giant clams in Vile Reef.
