Breakfast Topic: Do you RP?
Role-playing in WoW is an interesting hobby; it
can completely dominate your gameplay, or take a back seat to the usual business of killing things. Having established
characters on both RP and RP-PvP servers, I've dabbled in it myself, but usually end up explaining just what OOC means
to newbies in Mulgore, leaving [Barrens - General] and adventuring just as if I were on any kind of server.I joined a guild which brings the RP side of the game to life, and it's opened up something of a new world to me. Even if I'm soloing, I try and keep in-character when I play now. However, my non-RP friends don't see the appeal in emoting into empty air and making sure you find a bed before logging off.
Do you RP? Have you tried -- successfully or unsuccessfully -- to convert hardened PvE/PvPers?

I try and RP now and then, but for the most part, my characters have a certain minor level of RP built into them that just comes out when I play them. I really don't think too much about it, unless I really want to get melodramatic, or serious about something. For the most part my characters each have their own mannerisms/idiosynchrosies that they just sort of do without much thought on my part.

Well, I'm on Argent Dawn, so in guild channel and whispers to guild members, almost always. If it's to people not in the guild, then sometimes. I try to, but if they aren't into it, then I don't push it.
The irritating thing is that so few people in AD do RP...it's a RP server. If you don't want to RP...LEAVE! There are a lot of other servers that want you 1337 doodz.

To be honest, I preffer RP over just about anything else. I spend most of my time solo, but when I do join up in a party, or talk in guild chat, I'm in full character. I personally find it more fun to put on a character and get away from what's going on around me than just running around in a game whacking other players.

I'm with PodMonkeys (above), though not in disagreement with the others above. When I play Im in character in my head and in my heart the whole time.
I used to fully RP years ago when MMORPGs first became graphical (as opposed to text) but over the years, players do it less and less.
I love my undead warlock to be as evil as possible and I use voice emotes, silent emotes and other RP techniques when it seems like the scene can take it but you gotta watch it, many just take for a complete wanker when you do and it makes it hard to group and raid or quest when peeps think you're an idiot.

Absolutely. I don't play much, but I only play on the RP-PVP servers (or previously Bleeding Hollow). I find it easier to RP as part of a single race guild (e.g. Tooska Tribe)

Also on an RP-PVP server, and in guild chat and obviously Ventrilo it's OOC. But in /say and /yell it's in character. Granted I play a deviant, perverted and power mad Warlock, so most of my RP consists of double entendre and ego stroking.
I mean after all he's got a Succubus at his command.
However I would say that probably 95% of the people I meet don't RP on my RP-PVP server. When it first opened and I was in the 20-30 range the general channels in most sub 40 zones were rife with the debate as to weither RP or PVP was dominant. I'd actually get ignored for suggesting that both sets of rules apply evenly.
Then one of the five billion undead rogues would backstab me and I'd be too busy to argue.

Prior to getting WoW, I used to play on the internode neverwinter nights server (as Lomir, if anyone is interested :S), and that was RP. RP was enforced.
When I first joined, I thought "damn, this game rocks, but I don't want to RP". Eventually I got used to it, and I'm considering reinstalling it, but don't want to take time away from WoW.
That being said however, I'll never play on a RP server in WoW. I just don't see how it could work with the size of the game.
Also, every single person I know who plays on a RP server says no one does RP...

I played on an RP server last Spring, taking two chars up to lvl 29 each before joining a different server with old AC guildmates. I played in-character the entire time, because that's what makes the experience fun for me.
Even now on the PVE server, I'll often slip into character, doing or saying things that I wouldn't dream of outside the game (e.g., siccing my demon pets on defenseless forest creatures).
After all, that's why it's called an MMORPG. People who can't deal with that should stick with Counterstrike or Battlefield.

Personally, I find RP to be an engaging escape from the everyday bore of real life. It's depressingly difficult to find decent RP, although arguably easier on RP-based servers, and even more so with the wonders of flagRSP, but I finally found a really good (albeit small) RP Guild on Cenarion Circle with a great ongoing story line that I was able to get into.
And being original is always fun. I mean, how many other hateful Undead Warlocks are there who bear a vengeful deathwish against Varimathras? ;)
