Caster Stats and Spiritual Guidance
When a class
focusing on physical DPS picks up new gear with strength or agility, both their critical strike chance and attack power
- and thus their damage - improve. But this isn't the case for casting classes - while intellect offers a benefit
to spell critical strike chance (though the number on this is a bit uncertain) and spirit improves mana regeneration,
there's not a similar mechanic available for spells. In terms of gear, I mentally consider an item with attack
power to be akin to an item with spell damage on it, for the appropriate classes. The issue, however, is that
attack power can also be improved by strength and agility, while spell damage stands alone. What this means is
that casters tend to give up stats for spell damage, whereas physical DPS dealers can pick up armor with stats that
also improve their attack power. Is there a happy ending to this story for the casting classes? I'll give you a solid "maybe" - patch 1.10 introduced a new priest talent called Spiritual Guidance, which is an interesting answer to the continuing complaint of caster itemization. Spiritual Guidance is a 5-point talent in the Holy tree (you'll need to drop 25 points in Holy to max it out) that improves spell damage and healing by up to 25% of the priest's spirit stat. This is a particularly fascinating talent that transforms one of the weaker stats into a strong one and makes gear with only stats a viable option.
This makes me wonder if similar mechanics may be, in the future, applied to other casters - mages, warlocks, druids, paladins, and shamans - allowing them viable gear options other than pure spell damage. Thoughts, anyone?

Just be glad you are not a warrior. Next patch 1.11 we will probably be losing alot on Intimidating Shout. Instead of fearing anything around us it will be capped to 5. Hooray cant wait till they take away plate armor and charge. :-P

I've never played a priest so I don't know their talent trees all that well, but I think investing 5 points for +25 or +50 spell damage is kind of a waste. They should just make it a passive effect of Spirit in general, since Spirit is considered the most useless attribute by most players. +Stam and +INT seem to give you more benefit in the long run, though Spirit is a bit more useful for Priests.
Personally, I just keep a set of "+mana and +health per tick" gear in my bags and use a mod to auto switch gear sets between fights.
It would be nice if they did the same for Mage's in the coming revamp. Maybe make it apply to INT instead of SPI. But I don't know if I'd spend 5 talent points on it.

Well, my priest runs around 400 spirit, which ends up returning +100 to both damage and healing spells. That's not bad, considering you aren't making any gear sacrifices.

I know you were just stating a common opinion, but I disagree that spirit is a useless skill (especially at some of the lower levels). If you are into building your mining/engineering skills, you need those slots reserved to carry mega ore. So, I really enjoy the spirit's ability for quick turnaround on my mana. Especially when I fear something and it goes and wakes up the whole darn universe and they come to seek me out. :)
