Hunters & Mounts
I was skimming the official boards today, and came across this
thread that asks a very good question that has crossed my mind on more than one occasion, especially since 2 of my
main characters are Hunters. The question is: why do Hunters, the only class able to tame animals, have to pay for
their mounts at L40, when Warlocks & Paladins get theirs, basically, for free? Now, don't get me wrong; I'm not whining about the fact that both those classes get free mounts (although plenty of people on the aforementioned thread are), but just from a purely logistical standpoint, Hunters would seem like the first class to receive a mount via a quest; it just makes sense due to their nature. Their entire existence is based around animals; tracking them, taming them, fearing them...but they have to pay to have someone else teach them how to ride one? I dunno, maybe I'm nitpicking...or maybe I just want another mount without having to pony up the gold. What do you think?

agree.

I was talking with my guild about how every class has a speed benefit (except priests, this made a few guildies cry)
Warrs: sprint
Rogues: Sprint (?)
Hunters: Aspect of the Cheetah
Druids: Travel form
Shamans: Someone in the guild brought up that earthbind would be called a speed benefit. I agree because speed is relative
Warlocks: none, mount
Paladins: none, mount
Mages: not sure, do they have something?

I totally agree.
Then again, it might be because I have a hunter about to hit 40.

WoW logic....nooooooo! This is totally unrelated but why do tailors and blacksmiths and leatherworkers etc have to pay to have their armor and weapons repaired. I mean 90% of my gear I made. I mean if i crafted the damn thing you think i could fix it. I mean at least we could repair them using a few simple mats. Then again matts vs item is so nerfed its retarded. I mean soooooo many mats to make a phantom blade. On my server if i bought all them i would spen 60+ only to be able and sell the phantom blade for 30g tops. Like i said WoW + logic = nonexistant

Warriors have charge to close distance with a target, but not to escape. I'm not aware of a sprint ability for them, I think that's just rogues. Shamans have ghost wolf (40% speed increase, the same as druid travel form). Mages have blink.
The justification for this that I've always heard kicked around (though I've never run the numbers) is that paladins and warlocks have higher skill training costs up to level 40.

TOTAL AGREEMENT - with the original post and with Azghoul's comments too.
Hunters should get their mount free. The tailoring/leatherworking/blacksmithing/engineering (guns) folks should AT THE VERY LEAST get discounted rates on repairing.
When I was first playing the game, I felt like an idiot because I couldn't figure out how to make my blacksmith repair his own armor....then I realized that it wasn't possible.

The only character I play is a hunter so I'm kind of biased about the whole thing. I have yet to get a mount but I know it's coming up. With the way I spend money, I don't see myself getting one soon but it would be nice to get one via a quest or even better.....shouldn't hunters be able to have a special mount? Something they go on a quest for and end up taming. I don't know. It would definitely make more sense in my opinion. I actually would like to see a whole other class of animals in the world that are there specifically for mounting. Who doesn't want to ride around on a sheep? I mean seriously! That would be awesome. Ok, maybe I'm going off the deep end a bit.
Shouldn't hunters at least have a small advantage in say using other races' mounts. A slight faction boost or something. It should be more about the hunter and animals and not the hunter and different factions. Maybe a special "Animal Whisper" spell that lets you slowly persuade other faction mounts to be your friend or something. I don't know. Just some thoughts.

I definitely agree as well. There are some many discrepencies like this in the game, that's it's by no means a surprise.

Wow, RD. The double entendre in that comment made my day. Esepcially when you followed it up with the sheep thing. :)

You guys have some good ideas... make use of the WoW suggestion forum. I would like to see some of these things implemented.

I think part of the rationale behind a "free" mount for Warlocks is due to the fact that they have to spend so much on Grimoires for their summoned creatures. In other words, while they get a "free" mount at 40, they have to pay the equivalent of double for class training.

"Mages have blink."
Blink isn't all that. The cooldown is too long to try to escape from some mobs, and it doesn't shave that much off your travel time as other characters. It also uses too much mana, especially at higher levels.
mancko Mar 11th 2006 12:38PM
Blink shmink.
But we do have port, which, lemme tell you, saves a lot of time and irritation in getting to the major cities. I forget when we get it, but it was definitely before the mount thing was even an option.
crsh Mar 12th 2006 10:25AM
Well rogues' Sprint is hardly what I'd call a travel form, it only lasts 15 seconds and has a 5 minute cooldown (or 3.5 minutes with 3 talent points in Improved Sprint). You don't go far across a zone in 15 seconds. Just like Blink, Sprint is for "oh shit!" escaping (or closing in on enemies while stealthed, useful for PvP).
I don't know how it works with Pallies (never played one), but I find it ok for Warlocks to get a free mount since they pay a lot on grimoires and their class quests are actually pretty tough compared to others.
Hunters taming their own mount? Nah, they've already got it so easy as it is, come on :) I guess it'd be logical, but they already got a travel form; want a Ferrari with that?
Dave Mar 14th 2006 11:11AM
I don't think Hunters should get a free mount, but then I don't really think a Paladin should either. Hunters are certainly more qualified than a Paladin logically to get a mount. However, I think a little questing should be involved.
As a higher up Warlock, I got my mount not too long ago. I agree that a Warlock shouldn't have to pay... Grimoires cost an arm and a leg, and you end up spending way more than the cost of a mount by the end of the game. However, I really think it shouldn't be quite so easy to get one. You get a quest in Ratchet, then you talk to the same guy again, and bam, free mount. You really ought to have to track down one of the creatures or collect reagents or something.
So to sum it up: Money for certain mounts = no, Extensive questing = yes.
Cash May 6th 2006 11:16AM
All classes have various "money sinks"
Justifying a free mount based off prices of Grimoires would be like saying Rogues should get a freebee because they spend money on poisons. What about a hunter buying arrows? or a all of the other various reagents needed for certain spells and abilities?
I believe the developers made mount quests to amplify the gaming experience for some players. A warlock can summon a demon horse with its legs on fire... that's just plain cool. Giving a pally an armored steed... that truely makes them that "knight in shining armor"
I believe it would be nice to see ALL classes have a quest to obtain a custom mount that would suit their class.

a hunter should be able to mount your pet...riding gorillas anybody?? what about holding the reins of your very own clutchmother...eh eh
