Free Day!
Due to
the fact that US servers were offline nearly all day yesterday, players are being given a free day of
service. While it doesn't make any of yesterday's technical difficulties go away, and certainly hasn't
quieted numerous complaints, it seems like a fair resolution. Filed under: Blizzard, News items

Will people please stop bitching now?
Tryst Mar 29th 2006 1:43PM
Well, that's mighty nice of them. /cheer
And I doubt people will stop complaining, it's still really more laggy than usual as of late. I could barely move in IF last night. :-(

This may be a stupid quesiton but if we pay for monhtly sevrice, what good does a free day do? Am I going to only pay $14.50 for this month or something?
Brandon Mar 29th 2006 2:56PM
this may be a stupid question but what does a free day mean when you pay a lump 14.99/month. Is it only gonna be $14.50 this month or something?

When your current subscription finishes, an extra day of gametime will be added before your next subscription (be it automatic credit card renewal, game card, or whatever else) is started. So, if you decide to cancel and quit before your current subscription expires, it's no use. Otherwise, it's just as described - a free day.

Uh...okay? Doesn't make a whole lot of sense but it's a nice gesture I suppose. I feel REALLY bad for Blizzard sometimes. They have an obligation to provide a game and a certain level of service because everyone is paying them $15 a month to deliver that. Unfortunately, a lot of people feel like that gives them the right to piss and moan and complain all the time. And I guess that's the real kicker here. Does the fact that you're paying for a service give you the right to complain and complain and complain some more? It's an odd dilemma because it puts Blizzard in the awkward position of having to just suck it up. They're not really in the business of just banning people for constant bickering, so what's a company to do. I don't have any solid answers. I'm just trying to start a discussion on the topic. Anyway, nuff said. Talk amongst yourselves.

Elizabeth you are completely wrong. A free day is not a fair solution. This patch has been in beta for a month, they should have forseen all the trouble this would cause. With the BILLIONS OF DOLLARS Blizzard makes per month, one would think they could actually do things right once in a while, and maybe spend the profit on upgrading the servers and the datacenters.
and Elizabeth, are you so insecure that you can't take any criticism on your little WoW blog? I don't understand why you feel the need to delete any comment that criticizes you. Your insecurity is breahtaking!

For the record, $15 per month from 6 million subscribers is $90 million. It would take a year at this rate to reach 1 billion and they haven't had 6 million subscribers for an entire 12 month period yet.
I think the game's become much more popular than anyone expected, including Blizzard, and they're having trouble keeping up. Even with the large amounts of money Blizzard is now making they can't bring new servers online and new staff on their payroll overnight. I think they deserve a little more patience.

OK so I will admit my math was a little off. ::sarcasm alert:: I guess $90 million per month is not enough to get things done right.
The game has been much more popular than expected from day 1. It has been almost a year and a half since this game has been brought online. How much more patience than that do you think Blizzard deserves, exactly? Two years, maybe three would be enough for you to wait patiently for all the problems to be sorted out?

A free day is reasonable compensation for denial of service for a day. I haven't seen phone or cable companies do anything similar.
I expect Blizzard is not happy about what happened either. It cost them about $3 million assumeing all servers world wide were down. Probably not the case but a free day still cost them a chunk of change if only US and Oceanic were affected.
Personally, I am somewhat satisfied knowing their screw up hit them in the pocketbook.

Well, the other thing to remember is that the money they make per month isn't pure profit. They have enormous overhead paying their staff and upkeep on their servers.
I don't think the free day is so much make up for the recent lag issues and sever problems prepatch, but is more of a fair business deal since, in reality, due to the patch problems we lost essentially a full day of gameplay we paid for. I think Blizzard realized this, so they gave us the day back. I agree that saving 50 cents a month isn't much, but remember that costs them $2.75 million.

sorry about the double post above.
Maybe I'm just more patient since I've only been playing for a few months and I missed the worst days.
I totally agree with bobilox's comparison to phone and cable companies. If only I could compensated (even in a small way) for every time my cell phone doesn't work.

this is for all u lill complainers at the top of this post. first of all if u dont like wow than go play "everquest" and get all the good service and more detail in the game if u dont like blizzards service. like king manor said wow has been on about 2 years now and jus think in a couple more years wow will be way better way more popular than any other mmorpg. so really who cares if theres lag or if u cant play for a day, because no matter what the wow team will make it better.
also if u want to think about it all you that are playin wow are makin history. without you wow would be notin so keep playin through the up and downs. and here in a couple years wow will be the greatest.
srry for longpost
