Wisps: Really the New Alliance Race?
Initially, I brushed off
the "wisp" announcement as an
obvious April Fool's prank, but Blizzard has thus far been sticking to the assertion, with numerous forum posts
asserting that wisps are the real deal. This evening, Drysc noted that it was unfortunate the
change was announced so close to April Fool's. And Eyonix points out that he's stated multiple times that wisps aren't a
joke. So now I have to wonder - is this the real thing, or is it just an elaborate prank?Filed under: Alliance, Analysis / Opinion, Blizzard

Did you read the Racial Traits? "Permanent Death". Pretty sure Wisps are not the new race. Excellent April Fool, though.

u gotta think of it as this-when they announced it on Mar 31, it was April 1st somewhere. Today, when its April 2nd, its STILL April 1st somewhere. They wont admit its fake until AFTER all the world is over with April Fools Day.

I'm with everyone else - there's no way they'd introduce Permanent Death. No way at all. Did you see the name of the wisp character in the screenshot? Casper? Yeah, it's totally a joke.

50% weaker to axes when in tree form? come on, it's hilarious, lumberjacks ftw :)

Oh, come on. Of course it's a joke. The whole idea of wisps as a playable race is just silly! And permanent death is fake, of course. And as for those posts from Blizzard trying to convince us otherwise; of course they're trying to do that, that's the point of making a joke! I gotta say, it is very funny, especially when people start believing it...

Also, Blizzard specifically said that they wouldn't realease the race until they could do so "in all it's glory". The only glory we've seen for the Wisps thus far is the picture of the one wearing a moustache.

Wow, running out of blog topics?

Well, I've seen players requesting a "hardcore" option, like in Diablo 2 (where death was permanent).
And they're really carrying on about it. I'm afraid...

The interview that was posted a few days ago listed the land of the new alliance race newb zone as being called the “Ghostlands.” Makes me wonder...Blizzard has always been one to do unorthodox things...

Maybe thay're making a sucky Alliance race so everyone will roll Horde and balance out the ratio. Then queues will be shorter! Genius!
mk Apr 2nd 2006 10:28PM
I'd also keep in mind that since April Fool's is on a Saturday this year, the people that update the main site may be off until Monday. That could be why the Wisps bit is still up.

'Customize a wisp through a wide variety of colors, and facial hair. There are literally billions of combinations possible!' - a quote from the page.'
Billions of combinations?
Facial Hair?
dodge or parry axes is reduced by 50%?
Drain an entire FIFTY mana points?
Hello ppl! They don't call if April FOOL'S day for nothing. I can't believe Blizzard can announce something like this on the eve of April Fool's day and have people believe it. Shows you the intelligence of the people who read the entire page and still believe it.

Blizz has an immaculate track record thus far, which is really sayin somethin considering how old their getting. It would be really sad for them to shoot themselves in the foot by having the alliance race be wisps, and especially sad for them to shoot themselves again in the head by introducing Permanent Death, though I know there'd be someone who would try to be l331455 and get thier wisp up to lvl 70.

Plus, this so-called "amazing" racial ability detonate... Blizzard would NOT give a race a "permanent death" racial ability that only drains 50 mana from all present. 50 mana = TWO SECONDS WORTH OF REGEN.
boneyard Apr 3rd 2006 4:43AM
oh please indeed, with the current info given it is impossible to take wisps as a playable character serious.
Fabian Apr 3rd 2006 9:27AM
Has anyone ever taken into consideration - besides all the valid points that the stats are so obviously a joke - that wisps are not really a new race, as nightelfs turn into wisps while they are dead and searching for a new body?
Pointless thought:
What if you could choose to play a wisp when your night elf dies. Just level to 60 and when you're fed up instead of deleting him or her, you turn into a level 60 wisp and use detonation in Warsong/Arathi/Alterac!
elizabeth Apr 3rd 2006 9:58AM
Eyonix did respond to the posts about Night Elf wisps and the Wisp as a race. To quote...
"You can't see dead players when you're alive, so confusing a dead Night Elf for a wisp player won't be an issue. In addition, just like any other playable class, the wisp will be able to equip armor and weapons, and have limited character creation options available.
The wisp form the Night Elf transforms into upon dying will remain the same."
john Apr 3rd 2006 1:25PM
when wisps die, do they turn into night elfs?
