Breakfast Topic: Class Reviews?
We've recently seen the completion of the mage and shaman reviews, leaving every class reviewed besides the rogue. But have they all been for better or worse? Do you look forward to class reviews or do you cringe at the thought? Are official reviews a new beginning for a class, or the end of them?Filed under: Breakfast Topics

I've been looking forward to the rogue review ever since the "new patch, new class review" format was introduced, and especially since seeing all the love other classes have been getting. It's sad that we're last, but I'm excited about it to the max.

I think in general all of the class reviews have been overall very good for the classes in review. Often they would tighten up talent point usage (ie. something that would be 3%/6%/9%/12%/15% became 5%/10%/15%, allowing you to free up 2 talent points), or they would improve talents that were otherwise unused before. My friend's main is a mage, and he's very excited about the new talent trees for him (ie. Blizzard's chill effect lasting longer, Ice barrier's cooldown at 30sec instead of 2 minutes).
As a player with a rogue main, we've watched and waited and hoped as every other class has received a review. And usually in doing so, they've managed to break something for rogues (Seal Fate / Vanish bugs anyone?). Most rogues not only look forward to the review, but also look forward to WORKING AS INTENDED. I don't want to hijack this thread with my rant on why rogues have serious issues that need to be dealt with, but suffice to say that a quick look through the Rogue Forums (avoiding the hate spam / troll threads) will give you a very good understanding of why rogues need a review, even more so than shamans did. In summary:
- Stealth is too easy to be brought out of (Demoralizing shout, something that does no damage whatsoever, brings rogues out. Using abilities such as chain lightning will target rogues that were previously untargetable, etc).
- Dodge, a rogue's main defense, is useless against every class except other rogues compared to other class defense mechanisms
- Rogues provide no utility to a raid group (ie. no group buffs, no rez abilities, no role that can be replaced by another class) yet every other class contributes to the raid with some sort of group-wide enhancement.
- Many talents are placed in the wrong trees, or all-together useless (Imp. Garrote for example).
Now, I'll be ver clear and say this: I love my rogue, and I think rogues are possibly the most fun class to play (stalking someone Splinter Cell-style is extremely fun). The things I mention above are major concerns for me because I *want* to continue playing my rogue and would love to see these issues addresssed in our review.

Actually with the new patch they managed to utterly break one important aspect of the mage: Arcane missiles.
The 40% threat reduction on this spell was crucial to it's usage and now it's simply gone. Now it's doubtfull i'll even bother using it when i get a clearcast, much less actually using it at the start of a fight to make sure the warrior has time to get some aggro.

My main is a 60 Rogue, and the only character I know the most about... so this class review will be interesting for me and I am not really sure what to expect.
I think the Rogue is fun to play, can Blizzard make it more fun? Not sure, since we don't have casting abilities, or pets to manage, or rage to accumulate. But I almost wish there was something more.
Tibbs brings up a point that I have been discovering lately, we are pretty much useless in raids. ZG is not so bad, but MC I feel like such a burden for the healers.

Uhm, how about arcane subtlety...all enemy resit to spells reduced by 10 and all your criticals have threat reduced by 50%...

As a mage, I'm very excited for the new patch, and definitely plan on going elemental.
As a whole, the arcane tree is now pretty worthless, considering two important parts are spells now. the Mage CM even admitted most arcane talents are now filler up to PoM and AP.
If you're a mage, I wouldn't go anywhere past 3 points in arcane subtlety.

My highest toon is a 34 Shammy, so I'm not that experienced with the high-level effects of a class review.
But. I have to say I like the way Blizz does things. I spent a couple years playing SWG, and Sony's never-ending nerf/buff cycle resulted in a mass of pwergamers switching from FotM powerbuild to FotM powerbuild. All because Sony thought it was possible to balance a lever by changing the weight of both sides simultaneously. Dumb.

For #4:
Rogues are immensely important in high-end raids, and they can sometimes make-or-break whether a boss fight is acceptable. We're bar-none the best aggro-friendly DPS class out there.
If you find yourself getting too much aggro, you can do two things:
1. respec to a combat-heavy build. Even with daggers, building up a combo point or two and then laying down the SnD is godly, because in high-end raids it's all about the white damage.
2. don't forget to use feint sometimes :)

Well, as far as the reviews go, Paladins beg to differ... a lot. From consistently checking the forums, the Paladins have seen neither hide nor hair of an official response to the disaster that turned the Paladin from a decent tanking/healing hybrid to a heal/buff bot that's outclassed in everything it's supposed to do.
Even more insulting the fact that we're seen as whiners, despite all the effort several people have done to try and make the Paladins a viable force again with well thought out and researched ideas for how to make the Paladins shine. Blizzards staff has even said it themselves in the recently posted interview.
A simple thing to stop the whining is to actually acknowledge that our claims are valid, but Blizzard's not even giving us that luxury. They haven't said a thing in the forums since February and that should say something.
