Blizzard's Word: WoW Movie Officialy a Go
We reported yesterday about the news of a new WoW motion picture in development, and now it looks like the boys in blue have indeed confirmed that report. An official press release went out today, announcing the joint development of the film, with producers Legendary Pictures at the reigns. The release quotes both the Blizzard creative team and the filmmakers, and shines some light on what we can expect to see from the upcoming epic. No talent or crew have been signed as of yet, but I'm sure that the rumors will start flying anytime now, and the fans will have plenty to chew upon as the project comes to fruition.
Aside from my wary words yesterday, I do indeed hope for the best with this adaptation; aside from being a fantasy fan in general, I would enjoy a property I'm familiar with being given the proper screen treatment. I'm sure every WoW fan under the sun has their own idea of what the ideal Warcraft movie would be, and I'm sure the filmmakers are going to be listening to those ideas as the project moves forth, so start your dream casting now, folks!

Uh-oh. I certainly hope this is going to be better than the DnD movies (14% @ metacritic.com).

If Blizzard knows what's good for them, they'll try to get WETA involved (both digital and workshop) to add the right visual elements to the film. It's a shame Peter Jackson wouldn't get involved with that, but if someone can snag him for Producer, then this project will work out. But they'll probably get some music video director + some idiot screen writer and ruin the whole thing. I never have a good feeling about these things. And if Uwe Boll's name comes up, i'll vomit.

I'm sure Blizz will make it like Square-Enix's FFVII: AC film. They already got the storyline, they got the initial designs of everything. This will be quite interesting. I'm sure it'll take over a year or two as well, in which, I'll probably have quit playing WoW by then.

Frankly its difficult to use such a freeform MMORPG for a story in a movie. Even when there is a story it gets butchered regardless. Also if its going to be like Advent Children and done in full high detailed CGI its going to take a longer time than 2 years. Also are they just going to have a standard night elf as a hero or what? Horde all the way.

Uwe Boll... stay away from this movie!

One thing to keep in mind is that it's a "Warcraft" movie, not a "World of Warcraft" movie. So there's no particular reason to be afraid of the potential awfulness of basing a movie on the stories found in an MMO.
I'd say the fact that there is so much Warcraft fiction and no single "main" story or "main" characters is a good thing for a film, because the writers won't feel bound to any one storyline and the setting is so fleshed out already.
I haven't read any of the Warcraft novels, but I'd imagine that they would be a good indication of the kind of storytelling that we can expect from the movie.
