Healing in PvP
The priest I'm currently playing is the first character I've made any serious attempts to PvP with. And, no, I'm not blazing through Alterac Valley in shadowform - I heal, much to the amazement of people I end up grouped with. At first I was surprised by the shock of other players when I healed them, but after spending some time in all of the battlegrounds, I've come to realize that healing in PvP is quite a headache. In PvE groups and instance runs, players are arranged into parties. In a raid group, where there are multiple parties, there's usually a healer in each and we stick to healing our own parties. We move forward as a group by necessity - because a single player would be highly unlikely to stand on their own against the monsters we're fighting. I watch my party's health bars, and I heal them when they get low. Easy enough, right?
But in a PvP situation...
...individual players are quite capable of taking out opponents and capturing flags in Warsong Gulch or Arathi Basin. This frequently leads to players running off in every direction (though less so in smaller battleground of WSG and more so in larger AV), and out of range of my heals. So the usual tactic of watching my party interface and casting heals based on what it shows me stops working - i may be within healing range of half the party while the other half is on the opposite side of the map. Even if I have health bars for the entire raid displayed, there's nothing to judge who is and isn't within range of my heals, and attempting to heal based on those will simply give me endless out of range error messages. The next option is to simply watch the screen for players nearby, click on them, check their health, and heal them if needed. But now instead of scanning several players' health and casting heals on the one who most needs healing, I'm throwing heals around randomly, on whomever I can see and target first, which doesn't always coincide with the player who most needs it.
Of course a well-organized group that works as a team will never have such difficulties as I've described - but well-organized groups aren't always an option for players without membership in large PvP guilds. (Myself, I'm mostly a PvE player, and in a PvE-focused guild - which doesn't have enough players interested in PvP to front fully organized groups.) And while semi-organized pick-up groups may work out fine for DPS classes, while healing classes fall apart.
I'm hopeful that we'll see some changes in patch 1.12 (which is rumored to include a PvP revamp), regardless of what they may be, that make it easier for players to heal in PvP combat. But that could be a long time coming, and in the mean-time there's nothing to do besides cope with the situation as it is. Perhaps there is some tactic I've yet to realize, and despite my frustration, I'm keen to keep trying to figure it out.

Being a priest myself I have found that in battlegrounds a very nice thing to do is turn off name/guild name display and then hit 'v'. This turns on a health bar over everyone (removing the names just makes it so there is less clutter - feel free to leave 'em on). Now you have a visual reference of everyone around you and what their health is. WYSIWYH - What You See Is What You Heal.
Heal away.
You also have a handy visual reference of the opposing faction members' health, so you can maybe toss a key spell in on someone and finish them off - afterall, it is PvP, and it is nice to be able to get a kill in once and a while!

There are addons that greatly increase your healing capabilities in PvP. Some automatically select healing targets (allowing you to spam a button). Some just make it easier to find folks to heal (CT Raid Assist).
I use a combination of CTRA and CastParty. I find that if I can see/target someone who needs healing (like a tank sustaining a charge), I can flash heal them. Otherwise, I cycle targets and cast heals over time on them. That way, when they run off (and they WILL run off), they'll have a little bit of healing goodness attached to them :)

I use CT Raid's emergency monitor, which is really handy in alterac valley, but I wish there was some way to only show people within your healing range.
Healing in pvp is fun though. People appreciate you.
Another strategy I have is to lock on to a specific tank. I'll usually follow around the best equipped warrior and just heal the bejesus out of them exclusively.

First, You should consider using a healing add-on like Genesis. It allows you heal everyone in the raid (whoever has the lowest health) with a press of a button. In the front-zerg lines, you can basically run in, press heal, back out. Do this over and over and you are keeping solders up to fight longer. It also works great in AB where you might be attacking then healing at the same time. That way you are more looking at your interface to do some small damage, fear, or interrupt a capture and yet with a glance and a single key press you can make sure that warrior with low health stays up way longer.
Basically, in all raid situations, healing add-ons will increase your effectiveness ten fold.

When your going around in a Battle grounds try and look out for some semblance of organization. For instance I was in AV a couple of weeks ago and saw 4 hunters standing at the front lines hold off the horde. See as they were being targeted by the horde due to the threat they offered the hunters I bunkered down behind them and kept them buffed and healed.
The really nice thing about PvP healing is that it is more about watching the battle then watching the green bars, so you can be more aware of what is going on. While your at it don't forget to drop some DoTs while scanning for someone to heal, a two pronged attack tends to leave the enemy more vunerable.

When I made a few abortive forays into BGs with my priest, it became obvious that little efective healing was getting done so I resorted to bubbling anyone close to horde. It appeared to help some.

One of my all time favorite healing moments in BGs was with a Full Wrath/TF warrior. We randomly got grouped by the raid leader and I just healed him exclusively for the rest of the AV. Healing Pally + Warrior with Thunderfury = the fastest AV win I have ever seen. Ever since then, I find the best tank in the BG group, tell him to make sure he is in range by checking the Devo aura and then I try to find creative ways to hide myself and keep him alive.

I'm a Feral Druid and all I do is PVP. Since Priests are very hard to come by a lot of times I end up having to shift out and heal if a Pally or another Druid can't.
The trick is to ignore people who don't matter. I have a low mana pool so in WSG if they aren't our flag carrier I may have to let them die. In AB I barely ever get the chance as I opt to defend nodes often. In AV I only seriously worry about the main tank unless we aren't in a fight.
Works like a charm when I'm fast enough to get the heal off.

I like the assist key. Target an enemy in the battle and hit 'f' to see who he's targeting. It's a good way to make sure you're healing someone who's actively under attack.

I can't imagine how nice it would be to play PvP with people who you even vaguely know, like in a guild you've been in a while or something. It would be a completely different experiance. One that actually might involve winning occasionally against the Horde, who always seems to win no matter what.

Besides the rewarding experience of healing someone, is anything gained in terms of Honor Points by healing in PVP ? Of course a healer wont ever do the killing move, but at least he should be rewarded by healing the target of an enemy.
Anaea Jun 30th 2006 11:19AM
Netcownt hits on my issue with BGs. Not only do we get no glory, we don't even get any Honor.
I say we priests boycott BGs until Blizz makes them worth our while.
Faeton Jul 31st 2006 1:05PM
I have an L29 Priest twink that is a nice diversion from raiding on my L60.
I'm sorry, Anaea, but you are wrong. As long as you are in the party/raid you do get "honorable kills" in the BGs (perhaps so in world PvP, I don't know.) There might be an aspect of proximity, but I can tell you that my priest definately walks out of a WSG with a bunch of kills (even without a single killing blow.)
One dirty little trick is to put a Level 1 Shadow Word: Pain on anyone and everyone that you see. You'll drain a bit of health, ensure you get credit for the kill, and if you are lucky the opposing priests will waste valuable mana dispelling SW:P.

You get HKs if you are grouped and in proximity to the kill (not entirely sure what the proximity is). If you aren't grouped, you will only get HKs/honor for doing damage. This is one of the big changes in patch 1.12 - you will automatically be grouped upon entering a battleground.

In BG's, with my 49 Druid and 29 Shaman, I make it point to help whoevers around by actually healing. Many times its easy, you see on guy getting beat on by 1,2 or 3 others and you just start healing, this usually pulls the attention onto you in which you hope the guy just healed is close to killing 1 or 2 of them.
But the best Battle Healing Mod and something that should be implemented into WoW is
*GENESIS*
Go find it, it is excellent for healing. Healers without it cannot effectively heal in BG's because of the large amount of micromanagment.
Genesis will find the lowest health person within your healing range and pick the appropriate level heal and will heal. If you spam that button, it will always heal the same person, if you delay a sec, it will find the next lowest health toon within range of you. They have to be in the RAID, not party and with 1.12 this is solved. It will work for all the heals you have, so you have to have 3 hotkeys for each type of heal you have, my shaman has 2 atm, Healing Wave and healing something or other, basically one fast and one slow. My Druid has 3, Hots, Nukes and combo of both.
The efficiency of this mod is amazing, on my Shaman, i can run in, take out their priest, earthshock + purge and hes toast, then i stand there and just spam healing wave, this usually heals several people around me and keeps them up as they finish off the rest of the group. Druids and Priests are even more effective healers and with Genesis, you will feel like a God. Shield here, Flash Heal there, Nuke Heal over there. Psycic Scream everyone off you cause they all don't like you anymore.
