Spielberg to Direct Warcraft Movie?

Apparently, Variety is reporting that Steven Spielberg will be directing the upcoming live action World of Warcraft movie. It seems a little unreal to hear a big name like Spielberg's mentioned in connection with a video game-based project, but if anyone could make this crazy combination work, it would be Blizzard. With the success of other fantasy projects (i.e. Lord of the Rings) and World of Warcraft's immense existing fan base, perhaps it really is the type of project that could attract this level of talent.Update: This has been found to be pure fiction.

If Spielberg directs this movie I will be very disappointed in Blizzard. Spielberg has done some very fun movies and also some very serious ones that contain so very poignant images that will never leave my memory. The opening scene from Saving Private Ryan remains one of the most overwhelming reflections on the cruelty of war of it's kind. However he also seems to pander to an audience that he believes it too stupid to interprest subtlety. The final scene in above mentioned movie is completely redundant and does nothing for the film but leave one with this squishy cheaply processed melodrama.
Peter Jackson would be a logical choice but too obvious. With the amount of revenue they are generating they could probably steal someone from the former Pixar. Either way this move by Blizzard is probably the most risky venture they could possibly undertake. In retrospect of past failures to bring a video game to the silver screen (ever seen Mario Bros. all the way through... yieeeeks!) let's hope that they can prove me wrong.

If a World of Warcraft movie comes out I will be there on opening night. I think Spielberg is an awesome choice. If you had the aformentioned opening scene like in Saving Private Ryan with orcs and humans, that would be wicked. But Spielbergs style is consistenly very good. I'm excited.

^^ Have you played with the majority of WoW players? Do you honestly think they see subtlety in movies... Maybe about 5% of us do.
Skip WoW. Do a Diablo Live action movie.
