All About Jewelcrafting
Blizzard has released some new information about the jewelcrafting profession that we'll be seeing in the Burning Crusade expansion. Jewelcrafters will be able to make jewelry, trinkets, and insert gems into socketed items - imbuing them with additional powers. Raw gems may be used by the jewelcrafter to create jewelry and trinkets, or they may be cut into gems suitable for use in socketed items (cut gems may be inserted into socketed items by any player). Interesting, to me, is the article's mention of how jewels are found:By processing the raw ore mined from the various deposits and mineral veins, jewelcrafters can extract gems from the ore which they can then use for their craft. Although miners sometimes find gems while gathering ore, jewelcrafters mostly rely on their prospecting skills to get more of the precious stones.
Does this imply that jewelcrafting will be a natural match with mining for a supply of gems? Or that there will be a new "prospecting" profession for gathering gems? While we have a lot of new details, much is still unclear.

To me, all that comment is saying is that most people are mining nodes looking for ore and finding some useful jewels, while jewelcrafters will be mining nodes looking for jewels and finding some ore. I don't think there will be a new gathering profession or it probably would have been announced by now.

it sounds like it's saying that jewelcrafters will be able to "prospect" various ore (copper, tin, thorium, etc.) and get jewels out of them

I agree with Braomer. It sounds like jewelcrafters will be able to process already mined ore in order to look for jewels. I've already bought up all the cheap ore and normal gems on my server's AH. Once the expansion is out, I bet their prices will skyrocket. A few months ago I made a killing buying up all the Heart of Fire on my server just before the Elemental Fire transmute went live. I did a quick blog post about jewelcrafting and socketed items here:

So maybe Tin Ore will finally be worth.. something?

hopefully they won't add another proffesion that requires mining, that skill becomes way to useful then compared to the other gathering skill. and the prices for the stuff you get with it becomes even higher.

Its very possible that you will be using Non smelted ore to refine down to find jewls ...maybe some are mined and the rest extracted from the ore itself.
all i know is i cant wait to combine that with my enchanting =)
