Breakfast Topic: On Holiday with Azeroth
The problem with becoming immersed in WoW is that it's hard to leave behind -- I'm at the Develop conference at the moment, and whenever there's an hour or so of downtime I'm tempted to just log in and.. you know, check auctions or something.I succumbed to the temptation when I discovered a convenient wireless access point.. on the beach. What's the oddest place you've taken WoW? Or do you have more self-control than I -- can you leave it behind happily?

I'm desperately trying to figure out how I'll play WoW away from home - I'm going to Hong Kong for 6 weeks soon. There's wireless access points in all sorts of public places (like malls and hotels), but I'm worried the data delay of connecting to US servers from SE Asia will be prohibitive. And then there's the problem of figuring out the timeshift - In order to play with my usual guild-mates I'd have to be playing at 9am-12pm the following day (hard to do when working) - or they'd have to play at 9am-12pm the same day (again difficult to do when one has a job).

Last week I went to my friend's house to hang out, but he was on his way home from someplace and I beat him there. I was sitting in my car in his driveway, and had my laptop with me, so I took it out, connected to his wireless connection, and played for 15 minutes in my car until he got home. He was very amused when he pulled in and saw me with my laptop crammed between me and the steering wheel.

I seem to have no problem walking away from WoW. I love the game, but I've been gaming online for 11 years or so now. Being married, I realized (during Quake 2) that if I don't hang with my wife, I won't have one. I'm still not 100% certain that would be a bad thing... (j/k)

OMG - I just came back from an Alaskan cruise and I found myself playing WoW using the ships WiFi connection while sitting in a bar drinking cocktails and eating hors d'oeuvres. The connection was not too bad and the game was playable but the latency was constantly over 3000ms because of the satellite connection. I never tried PvE but did do some PvP without any real problems. Of course I did this late at night after the family was asleep, and in-between checking E-mail for work. No, I'm not an addict! LOL

Brought my laptop to work and connected to a seperate wireless network at a coffee shop next door. I usually do about 2 hours of work for every 1 hour of real time, so towards the end of the day I'd have some freetime to relax and play.

We were driving down the 5 freeway in central California, I connected my laptop to my mobile phone via bluetooth, and used the phone as the modem, and connected to WoW. Just cause. Worked like a champ.

Vacations are no reason to leave WoW behind. I always take my laptop on snowboarding weekends in mammoth and mooch off somebody's wireless hookup to play. Next week I will be playing from the Bahamas, tho I think I'll have to skip my guild raids because of the time difference :(

Satellite internet for the laptop and a bench... I played WoW at the Lincoln Memorial in DC :).
