Patch 1.12: World PvP
We've known for a while that patch 1.12 will include some PvP changes, including the addition of world PvP objectives. However, Blizzard employees have been reluctant to provide any details - until, apparently, today, when someone let IGN on a first glimpse of the world PvP system. So what should you expect? New outdoor objectives in Silithus and Eastern Plaguelands that will flag players who participate as PvP, and provide buffs to all faction members in the zone upon success. In Silithus, players will collect dust to turn in to camps of their faction (remember the camps for the "Field Duty" quests? This will be where you'll do your turnins.) - however, picking up the dust will flag players PvP.. In Eastern Plaguelands, there are several towers that will be converted into capturable PvP objectives. If your faction controls all of the towers, they'll receive zone-wide buffs. There's still no information on the sort of rewards that one might gain from this activity, but the fact that Blizzard says "no new PvP rewards" are on the horizon makes me wonder if there's nothing more than honor at stake.

The reward is just a buff that effects everyone in the zone. With no real rewards, I don't see this revitalizing world PVP. I doubt many people will be participating a month after the patch hits.

Hmm. Depending on how well this is handled will determine if it becomes a success or not. It better be worth it. The death of world PvP hurt the game significantly I think.

I honestly think that this will be a good thing. I'm sure that it won't be as popular as battlegrounds(which is probably intended), but it will give something quick to do while you wait for your group to show up for Strath and maybe give you something to do while you wait for your group to get set up for AQ20.

be flagged for pvp? but these areas are already pvp areas on pvp servers, so essentially its just us fighting each other with the added bonus that we can get a buff? pfff, not worth it. This is not the world pvp we were asking for

What we NEED is something like a King of the Hill in world. Something along the lines of castle sieging, where a faction can take a neutral (Guarded) point and gain honor for holding it. The longer they hold it, however, the more enemy mobs spawn to take it. And the mobs would be the same faction as the opposing team. In my opinion, the bigger the better... AV is my love child.

Blizzad has no idea how to encourage world pvp.
Even on pvp servers, you aren't going to lure people away from raiding without another means of obtaining end-game purples.
I joined a pvp server for a reason; I've thus been dissapointed.

If no new pvp rewards are added for these objectives then it will not make that much of a difference on a normal PvP server. Players can already PvP in other areas around the world and its really the rewards that unite people together to do Battlegrounds or Raid Instances. I sincerely hope that faction for completing the objectives are added along with some form of reward besides a buff.

In my opinion it sounds really nice.

This isn't world PVP. This is uninstanced Battlegrounds.
World PVP is fixing the stupid DK issue so folks aren't disincentived against rading the other faction and ARE disincentived to ganking lowbies. World PVP is setting up strongholds that need to be garrisoned to control flight points for the entire zone for the whole faction. World PVP is what PlanetSeige mostly was (without the being nerfed part). But, most importantly, World PVP means more than just the lvl 50+'s get to play. Bring back raids on XRoads and turf wars between SouthShore and TarrenMills. Bring back Raids for Racial Leaders. Bring back WAR!

Did you guys even read the article? Or am I imagining the part where there's Cenarion Circle faction involved?
SilentBob Jul 14th 2006 11:08AM
Let's see, grinding Cenarion rep while earning HKs while you wait for your hour+ AV queue? Sounds good to me.
elizabeth Jul 14th 2006 11:43AM
Hmm, I'm not reading that there's CC faction involved, but I could be wrong. The article says that you return the dust in Silithus to "the Field Duty camps associated with the Cenarion Hold faction quests." But the way I understand that, they're just explaining where the camps are - they're the camps where you go to do the field duty quests for CC faction.

@4 I agree
@5 yeah, or something like the WC3 mod 'DotA'
@11 You can already do that on a pvp server
If any of you guys have ever played DotA, you know it's really awesome. It would be great of there was a new zone that was *really* pvp. I'm on a pvp server, and the only world pvp that happens is the horde camping the entrance to BWL/BRS or the occasional battle abck and forth between SS and TM. Imagine a zone with a horde castle on one side and an alliance castle on the other, they each have an endless stream of lvl50-60 faction mobs that attack the opposite faction's castle - or try to, because the enemy is trying to also and they end up meeting in the middle until one side pushes to the others base, at which point they take control of the zone for some time period until the other side retakes their castle (could be on a timer). This could carry with it an insentive like rep/honor/quest/etc...

DKs were put in for a reason - at a guess, I'd say to scare 60s away from attacking lower-level towns.
Honestly, world PvP sucks if you're under level 50 and there's nothing Blizzard can do about it. There is always someone bigger than you that can kill you because they're a jerk, and you can't defend yourself. The only possible thing they could do is somehow give the level 50s a buff or an ability tied to location so they can compete - like put siege weapons in the lower-level towns that can kill a 60 in one or two hits, if they manage to connect. Otherwise, XRoads might as well be renamed gank city.
I play BGs on PvE servers for just that reason - when I play PvP, I want there to be the possibility that I can win. Plus, you need less honour to get the high ranks on PvE.

Back before BG's I didn't care all that much about getting ganked. I know that sounds odd, but it was because people had a different opinion on how to defeat a foe in an unbalanced situtation. We didn't just say, "oh, that guy's too high level, I guess I'm gonna die." It was more of a "Well, to heck with it, I might as well try, and if I can't do it myself I'm getting some other lowbies together and we'll gang up on him." People don't do that anymore, they just say "that guy isn't in my level bracket, he'll kill me."
BG's shifted player psychology, and I don't like it. I used to run with a group of four rogues, and we would make a practice of killing people 10-20 levels higher than us by ganging up. We'd stir up so much stuff that pretty soon there would be fifty people outside of Sun Rock Retreat all fighting back and forth. I remember grinning like a fool when I earned private rank. I felt like I was part of something. They release BG's soon afterward and real pvp died off. I never made corporal on my rogue, and quit playing it soon after that.
The cool thing about world pvp is that it's unbalanced, it's unfair, it's not soft edged and squared up. It's about finding your own way to even things up. You call in higher level friends, or travel in packs, or run for your freaking life, but in the end it's you that's made the difference, not some arbitrary level bracket.

I enjoy being on a PVP server to PVP ONLY when I want to. Getting ganked as a level 30'ish by 60's isn't what I feel PVP is about. Bliz should have made limits so this doesn't happen. Camping corpses is another issue. Either extend the res range, or have a camp timer that will port them somewhere else if they camp to long. I mean fun is fun and fair is fair. But please.. Make it at least a bit of both...

I see world PvP the same way I see world events….The possibility for new content! It would be nice if world PvP allowed a player to visit some area that does not already exist. When I first joined WOW I envisioned being one member of a giant army struggling to defeat the opposing side (something like the rest of the Warcaft series except instead of being the general I am now the grunt). Perhaps world PvP would be better served if a third continent was created that is always in the throws of battle. Divide this continent into several different territories and allow each faction its own separate landing zone. Once a faction controls a given territory on the continent they are eligible to fight for control of all the territories it touches (just like in a real battle/risk). Whichever faction controls the most territory for the longest amount of time every month becomes eligible to access a limited time brand new instance. The instance would exist on the home content of the winning faction and allow them to obtain nice new equipment and materials. I feel this design would inspire players to join in world PvP for 2 reasons:
1. The Alliance can finally feel the overwhelming satisfaction of driving the Horde back to the sea.
2. Get new gear for being a team player.
Just my thoughts…

The Silithyst will drop each time you take damage, which makes for a very interesting mechanic. In WSG it is intended for the flag carrier to run from battles due to the flag dropping on death but with this system the dust carrier must stay and fight or else he risks being damaged and having his dust stolen.
The only thing that I don't like about the battle in silithus is the buff it provides. The buff increases reputation gains with cnarion circle. I understand that you can't reward PvP with a PvP buff because if you buff them for winning odds are they will continue to win because they have that buff. However, odds are that the buff they shown us was just a placeholder until they can figure out a nice and balanced reward.
My idea for an ideal buff is a bonus to honor gains, increased damage against silithid, and a bonus to Cenarion Cirlce rep. The honor gain bonus would ignore diminishing returns for HK's and provide a slight multiplier. This buff would last 30 minutes.
This would attract a wide range of people to participate in the world PvP. The bonus damage against silithid would attract raiders who need an upper hand in the Temple of Ahn'Qiraj. It would attract casuals attemting to increase their CC rep and get their rewards faster. And it would attract PvP'ers both looking for good fun and seeking a faster way to gain honor.
