Interface Changes in Patch 1.12
I find some of the interface changes included in patch 1.12 to be quite interesting, and they follow the recent trend of integrating popular addon features into the core UI. Feature number one on my list is the new "floating combat text" functionality. You'll find options for it under the interface options menu (see right), and it mimics the Scrolling Combat Text addon, which shows combat information floating over your character. I've always found this to be a more convenient place to view information, but it can be too spammy at times. And, if you've never played with Scrolling Combat Text, I'd recommend giving it a try now that it can be enabled without downloading anything.
The look of the addition is dead-on, though it's a bit less customizable than the real thing, which allows you to select more precisely which messages you'd like to see, as well as customizing colors and fonts. This simplified interface may be more accessible to
more users, however, as the number of options Scrolling Combat Text provided could be a bit daunting. However, I may end up sticking with the original, because I prefer to be able to resize the font used.Of special interest to me as a healer is the new name plate functionality. If you aren't familiar with the phrase, name plates are the little health bars that show up over enemy and friendly NPCs when you hit the "V" key. In the past, name plates would only appear above hostile targets and NPCs. It's long been on my wish-list of features to have the ability to have name plates over friendly targets as well - for ease of seeing the health of players around me when either ungrouped or in a scattered raid, where you may not necessarily be near your own party. (Battlegrounds, anyone?)

Now, if you check your key bindings (see above), you will see a binding for showing name plates (for the existing functionality) as well as one that allows you to show friendly name plates or all name plates. Combined with the battlegrounds change that automatically groups players on joining, and my priest may have to respec holy and go back to trying to heal in battlegrounds.

Next up is a feature that came as a complete surprise to all of us - iTunes integration. This is a Mac-only feature, as, apparently, the Mac development team managed to get it working first. If you're running the Mac client, you'll see the above options at the bottom of the list of key bindings, allowing you to bind keys to basic iTunes functions.
The final feature addition, at least that I noticed, is the new auto self cast checkbox in the interface option. I've used a feature like this before - as part of CTMod, and probably other addons as well. With this option checked, if you do not have anyone targeted when you try to cast a friendly spell (a buff or heal spell, for example), it will automatically be cast on yourself. In some situations, and for some character classes, this can be very useful - allowing you to keep a hostile target selected while casting useful spells on yourself. But it can be difficult to get used to, especially for healing classes who frequently use little but friendly spells.

I very briefly played around with the new V key functionality on the PTR and, while nicer than anything else, I still find it hard to heal in BGs and in world PvP. The main problems were that large groups of players quickly overwhelm your screen and lots of movement makes it incredibly hard to target the right person to heal. I'm not totally sure if it's an improvement over ctrl-tabbing to everyone around or not. Or just clicking and looking at health bars until you find someone you want to heal. Basically, trying to heal a pvp PUG or a disorganized group sucks.

WTF?
Support for iTunes for Mac but no support for Windows Media Player for Windows? =[

I like seeing popular mod functionality getting integrated into the official client, but I'd kind of like to see a little acknowledgement when a new feature so blatently apes a well-known addon.
It has to feel a little castrating in a way when Blizzard puts a new interface tool in and now no one needs yours anymore.

I allow that the SCT and Autoselfcast are good choices, but the others just downright suck. They should have a poll on the forums of a short list of popular mods they are thinking about integrating and let people select one. Of those the best 2 or 3 will be the most likely to be implemented.
Come on, who needs iTunes or even WMP integration in the game? That is a huge waste of our money.

Actually, it's a huge waste of Blizzard's money, not yours.

I think the itunes integration is kind of cool :|
Then again, I'd rather see UI customizability like CT Mod. When are they going to rip that off?
Or how about sizable chat windows?

I like the nameplates and they're functional when you're healing players... what's annoying is that when you get back to a city and the nameplates are on for NPCs; you can't see their titles when the nameplate is up. I also just like the way they display in general. Showing only player nameplates is going to be nice. If they could only have an option to show an NPC's above the nameplate, it'd rock.

Maybe I misunderstand what you mean by sizable chat windows. The most obvious meaning is re-sizeable, which they are. The other day I accidentally left one of my chat windows unlocked and was resizing it instead of looking around in WSG, very annoying and then I had this huge window for the rest of the match.
The other meaning I can see is sizable == large. I always try to make text take up the least area on my screen.

Windows WoW doesn't need iTunes integration...
If you have a multimedia keyboard (like most windows users do) it automatically controls whatever media player you are using as your default. WMP or iTunes or whatever you like.
I've been enjoying this "new feature" on my PC with WoW since beta.

Yeah, Blizzard's constant pilfering of the mod community without even acknowledging all the hard work these guys have done has gotten old. Especially, considering how vapidly Blizzard lawyers will kick in your door if you even THINK about messing with/reverse engineering/modifying their game code. It's hypocryphal!

This game is so gear dependent, why didn't they include Itemrack?
I have 2 cloth and 1 melee class, especially on the cloth side I am swaping out most of my gear for pvp/pve or different instances. When you take into account gear sets, or resistance gear, or gear suited to 1 stat or 1 bonus, I am surprised Blizzard didnt make this a built in feature from the start. Even if you dont carry alot of gear, being able to equip a partial outfit of Fire-resist items, with 1 click, is nice for a fight in Molten Core.

Blizzard is not ripping anything off, they give the creater of the original mod incredible honour, as his creation is integrated into the game. it means that blizzard acknowledges that this guy has created for free, something that is better than what they could create for monye!
btw SCT is the logical step, since you can see the damage you deal, it seems logical that you can see the damage you take.

Yes! iTunes integration into WoW! - The main reason I have to minimize the WoW screen was to get to iTunes, now I can keep WoW full screen. (And frankly, who cares about Windows users, if you don't like it, go play one of the other dozen MMO's available for Windows.)

meh...
I start up winamp before I load wow(or any program for that matter). Just use universal hot keys to change my songs, adjust volume, or anything else. Keep your itunes.
