Breakfast Topic: Boat or Gryphon?
After a Zul'Gurub run was completed yesterday evening, the mages in the group opened portals to all of the major cities in a neat line. I instinctively clicked Orgrimmar. I complained to a friend I'd taken the wrong portal, as I'd intended to head back to Yojamba Isle, in Stranglethorn Vale, to turn in a quest. "The wrong portal? How could Orgrimmar be wrong? There's a zepplin to Grom'Gol right outside the gates!" The zepplin, I was told, would be much faster than buying a bat ride from the Undercity. However, I'm less convinced. Whenever I take a zepplin or boat, I have to sit and wait for the zepplin to arrive, so as to move on to it when it reaches the dock. And I have to remain at my keyboard while the zepplin is in transit, or else I'm likely to miss getting off when it reaches its destination. If I just hop on a bat from the Undercity, I can get up and do other things in the meanwhile - so while the time may indeed be longer, it feels less. However, what do you do - take the boat or the gryphon, when you've a choice?Filed under: Breakfast Topics

I usually take a gryphon...the only time I ever use a boat is when I'm heading to Kalmidor or Darnassus.

As long as I'm not forced to cross the sea I'm a fan of the gryphons. I still enjoy flying around looking at the (beautiful) world from above and the possibility to go AFK a few minutes is really great.

Boat for the sake of it, nobody even even bothers leaving the flat area to go inside and check it out, there should be more parties on the boats, and a NPC barkeep on all the boats... now thad be a cool trip.

For Alliance, at least, there is one time that the boats are generally faster than the gryphons. If you are up near Auberdine or Darnassus, and you want to get to Theramore or somewhere in southern Kalimdor, 9 times out of 10 it is faster to take the boat from Auberdine to Menethil, then take the other boat from Menethil to Theramore.
I've taken the gryphon flight from Auberdine to Theramore a couple of times, and each time I've regretted it - it just takes *so* long! I've never played a Horde character, so I don't know how long it takes to fly from Undercity to Grom'gol, but I know that the Auberdine to Theramore FP is easiest the longest FP that the Alliance has access to.

I agree, I had to go to the bathroom, come back, and then get a bite to eat for it to finish.

Im not a Fan of Either one. We have all played the game and seen the terrain. I think there should be an option to turn it off you hop on the boat and bam your there. or a bird and Bam your there. we have all traveled around we have see it all... and would much rather just get from Point A to Point B and be done with it. Especailly thouse who can only playa couple hours a day would benefit from this.

Zep to GG is a ton faster than the eqiv bat ride from UC. I am actually hearthed in GG, for and end game raider it is very convinient.
- The zeps to both UC and Org are directly above the inn
- Short flight to Kargath for MC and BWL (BRS and BRD also)
- Zul'Grub is obviously easy also
- Lots of lowbie alliance to gank when you are bored
Silithus is a bit of a pain but a little pre plannign takes care of that.

Boats and Zeps. There is a mod that auto walks you on and off the boat/zep. I saw it on Curse Gaming, I used it and it worked fine. All i had to do was stand at the tower or dock and when the boat came, me being at my keyboard or not, i got on and would stay on untill it arrived.

Heh heh, neither. As a mage, I set my hearthstone either in Silithus or in Theramore. Then, I can port or hearth to any major location and be within one to two quick gryphon hops from a location. Portals FTW!

The flight from Undercity to Kargath is like 8 minutes and 11 seconds. So the flight all the way to Grom'Gol is probably around 14-15 minutes.
I consider it much faster, if you are in a hurry, and not constantly alt tabbing to look at pr0n or whatever, to go to Org, wait 5 minutes for the zepp if you just missed it, and bingo you're at Grom'gol.
Sometimes I prefer to take a bat/wyvern though, so I have time to cook dumplings >:D
