If you do the math on the un-shielded warrior, I believe he only takes somewhere around 15% more damage. The big difference is that coupled with a lack of access to shield block, which reduces the damage he takes by quite a bit. If your warrior doesn't have a shield, he probably never uses shield block(or defensive stance) anyway, so it doesn't make a difference that he doesn't have one - kinda circular causality, but simply "EQUIP A SHIELD" is not going to help you terribly.
