Breakfast Topic: How Many Alts?
I consider myself an active alt-a-holic - with a dozen alts across several servers. I tend to switch off between them, using up rested experience here and there, and occasionally playing for longer periods on a specific alt that has caught my fancy. However, Shane points out this blog by Rah Si Kuhn - who appears to have a bigger alt problem than I do. (Though whether that makes me feel more or less secure I cannot say.) But what about you, dear readers - how many alts do you have? Are your alts a problematic distraction from a main character you mean to advance, or a fun change of pace?Filed under: Virtual selves, Breakfast Topics

Having alts is a constant struggle, hehe. Im trying to level my mage to 60 but I am often distracted by the desire to further my Warlock or my priest.

I don't have a main... I have many toons spread across different server types. I like rogues..., until I played a mage, and I thought I like him, until I played a hunter..., and then came my lock. I just started playing about 3 months ago. I can't decide what to take to 60, err 70..., so I guess I'll just have to take them all. Just don't tell my wife or boss...

I have 2 alts on my current server (Turalyon): a hunter, and a rogue. I have one another one on Kul Tiras (a priest).
I play my priest on Kul Tiras when Turalyon goes down. The 2 alts I have on Turalyon doesn't get much playing time lately since my main is almost to 60.

I have 1 main at 60 and 1 alt at 36. I've had several alts but i tend to delete them if they don't get past level 20. I'm a little bit of a neat freak and too many characters on my selection screen is just clutter.

1 of each char class, all with different professions so I can trade between then and send any nice mats to the right one. I'll eventually have 1 main with the rest maxed in their professions

Well, it took me some time to get my shaman to 60 after going through the various classes and finding one that suited me. I now have at least 21 alts spread across several servers. That doesn't include the many toons I have deleted out of utter boredom.
Alts are a good break every now and again. Sometimes leveling can be stressful and it's good to have something to fall back on and ease the tension.
With the coming of the expansion, I am sure that I will have to delete some of my alts on a server or 2 to make way for the new races. So while the number of alts continues to grow, I can assure myself that I will never be bored playing WoW.

Totaling around 20 alts right now. Only 5 in rotation currently. Had to try all the classes and all the professions. Have a lvl 60 paly, but the end game bored me and I like the gratification of achieving a lvl.
Geo Sep 6th 2006 10:07AM
Hi, my name is Geo and I'm a alt-aholic....
I have alts for every character class on the alliance side (my real life fear of zombies, keeps me from rolling horde). I have a 57 warrior, a 40 lock and the rest of my alts are in their 20's. I like the variety, and exploring the different classes and what they can and can't do. I also like seeing how long it takes to get the hang of certain different classes. I'm still not 100% comfortable with my priest and druid, but I have a blast with my lock and hunter. I tend to play alts 2-5 levels before I switch. Much to the annoyance of my guildies that want my warrior to hit 60 and go tanking in BRD with them- only to see me playing my lv 25 rogue or, 22 mage.

Hi, my name's Lance... and I'm an altoholic. Sad to say, but I've already maxed out the toon capacity of two servers, and have about half stock or more on at least eight others. My math is a bit shady, but I'd have to say I've got at least 30-40 alts. Due to this, I have been unable to attain the golden '60', but I now have a mage that I can call my 'main' (41 currently) until the demons care to be heard again and the uncontrollable rage of alt-ism burns strong once more! Wish me luck. ;)

I have one alt. If I had more than one I'd be questioning my sanity.
Ghostle Sep 6th 2006 10:51AM
I have a main that funds my 3 alts, which I keep around the same level (29,29,30). Nice change of pace from what I am used to
Larawen Sep 6th 2006 10:55AM
60 Main Rogue
23 Alt Lock
20 Alt Pally
45 Alt Rogue (Differnt server)
and about 5 other misc. bank alts, not shure if this qualifys for a alt-a-holic

I have a big case of altism, but I have been doing very well in this game to control it.
In other MMO's, my "mains" suffered due to the extreme amount of alts I had, but in this one, I have been good, and focused mostly on my hunter. I occasionally get side tracked a little, but only have 1 other toon above 19 currently, and he's on a different server that my brother plays on, so it doesn't count. ... right?
zzzyxas Sep 6th 2006 6:43PM
across about 23 different servers i have approx 140 chars and only one is not in alt so... 139 alts... i have no life outside of work
Urthona Sep 6th 2006 11:28AM
Hi, my names are Urthona, Marrigan, Odn, Phraya, Zaes, Tharmas, Ekedna, Erezkijhal, Oberan, and Prometheon... and I'm an altoholic.
I have two families of alts (5 for fighting for the Alliance, 5 for Horde) on the Cenarian Circle. After some tricky algebra, I managed to figure out a way to get every class and every race in my ten character limit. I learned a long time ago that I shouldn't go about telling other players how to do their jobs without having experience in that role. So while my initial character, resto druid Urthona, may learn how to do the job of a tank, a healer, and DPS, there's subtleties in the gameplay that you only learn by actually playing that class.
For those who care, I'm on a roleplay server:
Urthona Starfallen, male Nelf Druid, flowerpicker and skins
Marrigan Van Cleef, female Human Warlock, flowerpicker and alchemist
Odn Warhammer, male Dwarf Hunter, miner and skins
Phraya Silversprings, female Gnome Warrior, miner and Goblin Engineer
... followed by Zaes the male Draenei Paladin > jewelcrafter!
then there is
Tharmas Skychaser, male Tauren Shaman, flowerpicker and skins
Ekedna Scarmaker, female Orc Hunter, miner and skins
Oberan Van Cleef, male Undead Cryomancer, flowerpicker and alchemist
Erezkijhal Darkblood, female Troll Priestess, tailor and disenchanter
... followed by Prometheon Sunrunner, male Belf Rogue > Gnomish Engineer
I've found I actually behave differently and speak more or less depending on the character I play. And my imaginary backstories weigh heavily in how that alt interacts with groups and his/her role. Urthona is torn between loving life as a druid and regretting not becoming a priest. Phraya is a friendly to everyone, but very intolerant of idiocy in any form. Odn is gruff and a bit of a loner —and doesn't drink. Marrigan hides her secrets under a flirtatious veneer.
I don't play Horde much at all, but I'm very anxious to learn how Ekedna will come to life. I've imagined trajedy in her past, and a drive to avenge the death of her husband and daughter at the hands of the Darnassian weapons trainer.

I have an Undead Mage as the primary, a Night Elf druid, and a Human Priest. The last two stop me from finally leveling up my Mage to 60...
Keeper of the Dumplings Sep 6th 2006 2:37PM
I have a 60 warrior main
A 60 tauren shaman alt on the same server, who happened to be my first 60, but I didn't like the way armor looked at him and how he couldn't stand still for 10 seconds without sneezing or scratching himself so...
A 60 orc shaman alt,
A 60 human rogue alt on another server,
A 60 human priest alt on yet another server,
A 60 human paladin alt on another server,
A 43 night elf warrior alt that I stopped playing.
And many more :P
Hungry?

I spent about 11 months from release levelling one of each class to 60 on Silver Hand. Most of that was solo with the occasional instance with friends. I played them all fairly evenly, going up 2 levels at a time with constant rested bonus. With a couple exceptions, they all reached 60 in the span of two weeks. All have mounts and 300 tradeskills. Looking back, I could not have imagined doing it any other way. I enjoyed learning how each class handled the same encounters. Between them, I have probably completed 95% of the possible quests. I play much less these days, only going online to help out real life friends in need of another body. Nothing like having any class at your disposal to fill out a group. Only drawback now is deciding whether or not I ever want to devote that kind of time again to bring 9 toons up to 70.

I actually don't have a main. I have four Alliance characters on Nargonnon. I try to keep them at about the same level, not very sucessfully because I like my pally and hunter more to my rougue's loss. I have a 38 pally, a 34 hunter, and a 17 rogue. They all feed a lvl 5 warrior auction mule who rakes in the gold for them. It's great because each alt feeds the professions of the other alts and I can pass armor, weapons, potions, easily between them. I'm not worried about getting to 60 - i'll get there eventually and if I have two up there at a time, so much the better. I will echo earlier comments that playing several alts at once gives me an appreciation of the abilities of each class and make me more aware of what each can do in a group. I do have 3 Horde characters on Kael'thas that I don't play very often and I started an undead on Venture Co. to try my hand at RPPVP - we'll see how that works out.
