A second sixty in the making
I'm a serious alt-a-holic, with dozens of characters spread out across servers, factions, races and classes. After getting my first character to level 60 a few months ago, I've been exploring the endgame, but still spending time with my alts too -- and now my first real 'alt' character is about to reach 60.
At the moment, I'm considering how to approach the 'main'/'alt' situation. There are many things I want to achieve with my main; the pvp and reputation grinds are nowhere near done, and there's plenty of bosses to fight and items to collect. However, I'm a little bored of the sameness of it all, and being able to experience these encounters from a different class's point of view is going to be refreshing -- and will involve a lot of relearning.

I pretty much share the same experience with my main (albeit my alt is nowhere near 60). I just hit 60 with my main Night Elf warrior last Saturday and right now all I've been doing is grinding rep with Alterac Valley to get the epic shield and the epic ram (only 4K more til exalted).
After that I want to do some end-game instances (my main goal is to down Onyxia) but the guild I am currently with in Turalyon doesn't do raids (only started ZG and even then, that planning is not as smooth and not as often as I would like).
Anyway, my point is, I find the rep grind to be boring at times and while I help out with BRD or BRS runs once in a while, that gets boring fast too. So I turn to my alt Warlock and slowly levelling it up. And to tell the truth, I'm having more fun with the Warlock than I am with the 60 main. At the moment, I think I'll just use my 60 to rep grind once or twice in AV and just financially support my warlock... unless I can find another raiding guild on my realm that will take a n00b 60 like me to at least ZG and Onyxia.

If your guild doesnt have a varied enough raid schedule (IE: at least 2 different 20 mans and 2 different 40 mans) every week, join a new guild. Getting epix and using them in battlegrounds against nubs will always be more fun than getting BACK to level 60 with another character.
My guild clears MC, ZG, BWL, AQ20, and AQ40 up to Twin Emps every week. As soon as we beat C'Thun, we're going to skyrocket through Naxx. That's so much more exciting than, "I will level ANOTHER character in the GOD FORSAKEN BARRENS next month," imo.

i tend to kinda alternate periods where i just play my main and periods where i mostly play my alts (and use my main to raid). right now, i'm tinkering with my alts, finishing the tier 0.5 chain on my pally alt and also leveling my warrior and rogue some more.
before that, i spent nearly 6 months of playing nothing but my main (doing such nutty stuff as getting quad-exalted witht he goblin towns) and i expect to have another such period after the expansion hits.
personally, i find leveling my alts both engaging and rewarding -- i've learned a great deal about how the other classes work by just playing them through zones i've already been through. conversely, idon't find raiding with my alts to be all that entertaining. i've got a my priest alt all epic'd out, but it's just not somehting i'd go out of my way to do again.
