More on 1.12.1 mounts
Since the mount changes coming in the next patch were announced earlier this week, players have had tons of questions about how the new mounts will be bought and used. I'm sure you know by now, if you've hit level 40, that buying the riding skill for mounts is 20g, normal mounts are 80g, and epic mounts are 900g. But in the next patch, there will be two levels of riding skills, a lower level (75 skill) for 90g, and a higher level (150 skill) for 900g (take a guess which kind of mount will probably require 300 skill...). Because the skills price will grow, the mount price itself will drop-- only 10g for each normal mount, and 100g for each epic mount. The overall price hasn't changed much, but the skill is much more expensive, while the mounts are cheaper.First, of course, everyone wants to find out what happens to the mounts they have now. Hortus tells us, thank goodness, that if you have a mount now, you will have the appropriate skill to ride it when the patch hits. Paladins and Warlocks will get both their mounts and the required skill from their quests. If you have a PVP or AV mount, you will be given the 150 riding skill just like everyone else. All mounts will be BOP after the patch, so if you're holding a mount for someone else, pass it off soon. And finally, due to the new mount prices, I figured it would be lots easier to get lots of mounts. It will, with the faction, but to get other factions' mounts, says Hortus, you'll still need exalted with the other faction. So there's still a good amount of grinding in there if you have a horse and want a tiger (or an elekk...).
Finally, we here at WoW Insider know exactly what your real question is: "How can I do it the cheapest way possible?!" Things are still open to change (of course), but the cheapest way to get a mount and skill seems to be this: If you don't have the money (or level) for an epic mount, buy a skill now for only 20g, and when the patch hits, you'll be given 75 skill along with everyone else, and will be able to buy a normal mount for 10g, giving you a mount and skill for only 30g (normally 100g after the update). But if you have the money for an epic mount, buy one of those for 900g, and when the patch comes, you'll be given a riding skill of 150 (because you have a mount in your possession), and you'll already have the epic to go with it. In that scenario, you're only saving 100g, but as anyone saving for their first mount will tell you, 100g is plenty of money.
Update: A previous version of this post listed the wrong patch for the mounts. Thanks for the comments.

These changes are coming in the next patch (currently on the public test realms), not the expansion.

Way to change something that doesn't need to be fixed, Blizzard. GG.

Ya, this is the stupidest change ever. For all my toons that don't get their own mount, I grind frostwolf and or get to rank 11 and get a cheap mount, it makes it nice and cheap for me. Now its stupid, I have to pay 900 stupid gold just to get the ridership. not everyone (and very few ammounts of people) actually go out and try and get a different mount then their race's. This is just a waste of gold added to everyone

Thanks for clarifying. The previous post on this topic was confusing to say the least. Too bad I don't have the gold at present to purchase AV Rams for my alts at the moment... ah well.

Also, now the Honored and Rank 3 discounts no longer apply to the majority of the cost since the big expense is training instead of a vendored item. So for many people the cost of an epic mount is now several hundred gold higher.

Im pleased for my self now i can buy multiple Mounts for my one character cheaper as i already have a epic mount
Sokom Sep 18th 2006 11:22AM
This is awesome, I already have an epic mount, but I was in the process of turning in lots of Runecloth to become exalted with darnassus! But rather than spend 900 gold now, I'm going to wait for this patch and I'm only going to pay 100 gold for the epic cat mount! THIS IS GOING TO ROCK!!! Become exalted with one of the factions ASAP if you want to ride a cross faction mount! You're going to save 800 gold on the mount!

So if I don't have an epic mount right now, but I'm saving for a Frostwolf (exalted with AV) then I'm out of luck trying to get an Epic for 640 gold? Sucks to be me! :( Are they TRYING to make me buy gold?

Way to go Blizzard for changing something that did not need to be changed. It is so pleasing to know that riding a damn horse will cost 900g but the horse itself won't.
I can't believe you actually are going to implement this change. There are so many other things that need to be fixed, instead you give no reason why this change is implemented and you favor those who already have epic mounts and crucify those who don't.
Blizzard AMAZING.

If I had to speculate about the reason for the change, I'm guessing it's that there are going to be a lot-- a lot-- of new mounts coming with the expansion. Drops, factions, racial mounts. There's probably going to be a ton of them around, and so Blizzard decided it would be easier to have one riding skill and make it really expensive, rather than have you buy a seperate riding skill for every single mount you come across.
Was there a pressing reason to do this? Not from what we can see now. But I'm guessing the reason is because we're going to get a lot of cool new stuff in the Burning Crusade.

My question is: what if you do not have your Epic mount, you are lvl 60 and go buy the training for you mount now.... since you are already trained to ride epic, does this training translate over to 150 skill level and then buy the mount for 100g?
Would be really nice to know
Hyrican Sep 25th 2006 7:19AM
No, if you buy the riding skill now you will only get 75 riding after patch, because now there is only one riding skill per faction for normal mounts and that requires only lvl40, the epics don't require a new skill pre patch. When you hit lvl60, there is no other riding skill right now for epic mounts. After the Patch, there will be.

WTB Refund for all the money I spent on my crossfaction mounts pst!
Buldozer Sep 27th 2006 2:06PM
This is shit. As long as we need to "buy" the riding skill, what is the difference between, selling a "mount" or selling a "riding skill" ? u still pay for it and this is the only way. And ffs, i have to "buy" epic mount riding skill for drops (like from bloodlord, or Baron in strat. They make us "play" more and they wanna earn more with it cuz now the rep discounts will not be applied to this shit.
This suck. Im quitting this game and will never! play again. Oh yes, nobody cares if im playing or not but still i wanted to say.. Blizz sucks, everthing is for money :)

to those of you crying i laugh at you HAHAHAHAHAHAHA i now have 4 epic mounts and still have a few hundred gold on the side.
Coco Sep 28th 2006 5:32AM
I'm a dwarf and want a tiger. Is it possible to let some nightelf buy the mount, send it to me and then be able to use it when the patch comes? allready have riding skill but havent bought any mount yet.
"Koss" Ross Oct 4th 2006 9:41PM
Way to make hundreds of people cry Blizz.
GG - Next time please fix something that needs to be fixed, not, as Dan said, crucify those who don't have mounts. So much for Battle Ram eh? I know around 20 ppl that quit because of this change, but what's that to a juggernaut like Blizzard? Just wait and see. Numbers add up.
