Have some friends who aren't yet hooked?
Not very likely, I know. But if you do have a friend that hasn't yet been convinced to start playing World of Warcraft, it's a cheap time to get started, as Blizzard seems to have quietly dropped the cost of retail boxes to $19.99. Local prices may vary, but I've noticed several local retailers showing this markdown, including Best Buy, EBgames, Fry's Electronics, and Amazon.com (coming in with the low, low price of $18.98). So, unable to finish a post without adding in some Burning Crusade speculation, I have to wonder if is this price drop another sign of impending expansion release? (Get a few new players in before the expansion hits, or lower the cost of entry for new players once the expansion is released, perhaps?)Filed under: Blizzard

Most of my friends who don't play World of Warcraft (which actually equals all of them) don't play it because of the monthly fee. So I don't think the $10,- off won't make any difference.

If you want to get the hooked dispite the monthly fee hop into BestBuy or GameStop and go to the register and for a measely $1.99 you can buy a working copy of the game (DVD I believe since it's ONE disk) and they can try it for 14 days...
After putting in some time and playing with someone for 14 days they either: a. don't like the gameplay, b. can't figure out how to play, or c. are some really cheap bastards.

Yeah, the monthly fee was what kept me away - until someone game me the trial disk and said "try it, trust me"...I'm now on the 6 month subscription plan and will probably need a 12-step if I ever manage to quit.
What shocked me was that literally no one at work here (I'm in Hong Kong for training right now, usually I'm in the US) even knew what WoW was...so much for all engineers being nerds. Guess my co-workers aren't the right demographics for computer games in asia.

All your co-workers are secretly chinese farmers, so that is why they're being quiet.
I started off playing a few different free trials myself, to really learn the game, and what class I wanted to play before I had to actually pay for it.
Then I got my friend hooked the same way.
What a sucker.

If you use the recruit a friend system through wow's account managementyou can get a free month out the deal once they sign up. No need to purchase a retail box or even step outside into the dreaded sunlight.
