Some good comments so far. Just to add, you have to remember that the majority of WoW is a player driven economy. I have a level 6 hunter who's only purpose is to make money for my main paladin. I have auctioneer add on installed.
The vendor price is always accurate, but to make the best of the auctioneer add-on you need to scan the AH at least twice a day at different times. This then gives an average of what items are selling for on in the AH. Always scan before you sell or buy this will give you up to date information on what the current price of an item is. The good news is that this information is kept on your C: drive so all of your characters have access to the information provided by any of the characters AH scans.
To make the most of your Auctioneer add-on. It's also worth setting up some macro's to search for profit items. I won’t reveal to many secrets though as it may upset some players cornering the market in the wildhammer realm.
