Burning Crusade profession updates

Some of this has been categorized as rumor before, but now there's official word on some updates for existing professions. All crafting professions can expect new recipes and all gathering professions can expect new types of item to gather, but there are a few interesting tidbits mentioned as well.
- Alchemy will have specializations that will occasionally allow the player two create two of their specialization's items. (Potions, elixirs, and transmutations.)
- Blacksmiths will be given powerful bind on pickup items for their specialization. These items will be upgradable to keep up with the blacksmith's progression in the game. (Nope, there are no further details on this yet.)
- Enchantments now seem to have a minimum level requirement (based on the sample enchants being shown) and there will be new enchants for rings in the game.
- Engineers are promised "many new and intense gadgets" but I'm not personally impressed by any of the previewed items.
- Herbalists can expect to find plant-based monsters beyond the Dark Portal from which a trained herbalist will be able to harvest herbs, much like a skinner skins beasts.
- Jewelcrafting will, as we know, allow for the creation of necklaces, rings, trinkets, and socketable gems. If you match the color of the gems to the color of the sockets on a socketed item, you'll receive an additional bonus from them.
- Leatherworking will offer more high-end armor options, with claims of viable crafted gear to help you venture into end-game dungeons.
- Miners will also find some creatures of the Outlands to yield harvestable minerals when killed.
- Tailoring is set to have its own specializations, though there's no announcement on what these will be, the specializations will allow the creation of multiple items occasionally, like alchemy. Most interesting, however, are the tailor-made (and tailoring skill required to use) nets that can be used to capture targets for several seconds.

Can any professions craft -bows- yet, though? That's what I want.

What about the Secondary Professions? What new things might we expect to see for Fishing, Cooking and First Aid?

You and me both, Will. But I don't think there'll be any bow-crafting profession yet.
I'm most excited about the tailoring news. Curious as to what we'll be able to specialize in.

These are the only professions that have official stuff up on the Blizzard site so far. And, as everyone in the beta is apparently fawning over jewelcrafting, I haven't seen anything interesting about older professions (or at least nothing we haven't already posted).

Yes, it seems with more health and mana on level 70 characters, it would make sense to bring in new cooking recipes as well as new types of bandages. Maybe Felcloth and Heavy Felcloth bandages are in the works?

"Enchantments now seem to have a minimum level requirement (based on the sample enchants being shown..."
Wow, no more level 22's running around the Barrens with uber-enchants? Amazing..

First, a link to the official page on the info, which also offer sample craftables:

Second, one should not miss the key new aspect of engineering not covered in this article. Not the new gizmos, but the news that engineering will now be partially a gathering skill, in which engineers must now extract "motes" from gas clouds and swirling vortices in Outland.

I'm in the beta, and there are new bandages. You can get a book to get first aid up to 375, and new fel cloth/heavy fel cloth bandages, just as Psyclerk theorized.
As an Engineer, I'm really bummed about the lack of love so far.

Have they fixed the whole changing profession specialisation thing? Isn't it true that you can't go from say Tribal LW to Dragonscale LW even if you start from scratch?
Brommon Oct 16th 2006 8:25PM
Yes and yes, Woild. :) Yes it is true you cannot change specializations in the game right now, and yes they plan on fixing this in the expansion.

One thing - and imho the best thing - you forgot to mention about tailoring is actually stated in Blizz's site. "Tailoring doesn't have many powerful high-end items, so more are being added for the expansion."
This be really good. Tailoring is one of the weakest professions at the moment: It's difficult to start grinding the materials for new armor, because usually the cloth drops don't match the cloth required to make good gear for your lvl character. Thus tailors are constantly lacking behind. And once you finally hit 300 with tailoring, you already have better gear from dungeon drops than you get from non-raid patterns.
So thank you Blizzard for changing that.

Cool note for herbalists that wasn't mentioned yet. When you harvest herbs you will occasionally receive consumable soulbound items that can be used to benefit your character. I have only seen one item so far, so I don't have much detail. When I entered the Outlands and harvested my very first herb called Felweed I also received some kind of plant like item that I was able to consume. I forget what it was named but it basically worked like a shield that you might receive from a Priest and it absorbed xxxx amount of damage. I have harvested many felweed since, but I have not gotten another one yet so apparently they are fairly rare bonus loots.
