5-player epics confirmed in the expansion
In a post on the beta forums, Tigole has confirmed that we will see epic drops in 5-player dungeons on "hard" mode. Level 70 dungeons on "hard" will have epic loot tables and lower level dungeons on "hard" will have level 70 loot tables. Of course, without solid information (yet!) on what drops and where, raid dungeons may still be contain the very best items -- but for now you can look forward to finding some very nice gear without gathering more than 5 other players. Anti-social folks like myself are no doubt rejoicing at this very moment.[Thanks, Chris!]

Before this gets blown up in to another "ZOMG UR EPIX WILL BE WORETHLESS IN 30 SEOCNDS LOLOL1ONE!", it may be worth keeping in mind that epics *already* frop from places like UBRS. Not with the regularity of epics dropping from raid bosses, but a whole lot more often that super rare epic world drops. I know several people, including myself, that have picked up an epic from Drak in UBRS.

The UBRS epic drops are such a low percentage, they could be considered rare drops (which they are). I believe the hard mode of Outland dungeons will be akin to running MC, where every boss drops an epic.
If they don't drop epics, they'll at least drop tokens towards epics.
Point being, it won't take 100 runs of a UBRS-equivalent on Hard mode to get that epic you've been looking at.
Will these epics be as great as the 25-man epics? Probably not. We'll still yet see complaints arising from people who want "more epic-ed out epics" after they compare the 5-man tables to the 25-mans. I believe time invested should be rewarded, thus I see no issue gimping the 5-man loot in comparison to the 10/25-mans.

Keep in mind there are some epics that fall from the 5man instances, not just UBRS. Scholo and StratUD come to mind. Those epics are nothing to sneeze at either.

Thank God. I always thought the idea of the 40 person raid to get epics was a bit ridiculous. I think it's a great idea to make 5 man instances have epic loot. Just make them incredibly challenging and demanding and I don't think that anybody will be complaining.
And for the record, I'm sure that the new 25 man raid instances will have amazing loot as well.

It's rather funny my wife and I were talking about how they could improve the OLD instances by implementing something along the likes of Lost dungeons of norrath type features. You choose how hard you want the instance to be thus scaling the loot and mob/boss difficulty based on how tuff you and your group feel you are. Then I read the post and realized oh ya Tigole knows a ton about how MMORPGs should be and play after dealing with EQ for so many years lol. Maybe they will add something like that for the old (year and a half) if that's old instances.

This is great news. I've hit 60 and done all the 5 man instances plus UBRS. I love the 5-man instances, but I've hit a plateau. Even geared in mostly tier 0 stuff, the 5 man instances don't present much of a challenge anymore. My schedule doesn't really allow me to participate in a raiding guide, so I'm stuck.
I look forward to having more high-end content (and gear) that supports my playing style.

I'm liking these xpac news more and more. Finally I can get some epix other than the ones from AV =P
