Burning Crusade delay reaction roundup
Well, the big news of the day is the expansion release's delay until January of next year. I've just spent a good hour sifting through forums, blog posts, and general player reaction to the news, so let me see if I can't boil down the salient points for you.Yay, a delay!
- Well, that's not quite true. No one's really thrilled there is a delay-- we all want to play the expansion as soon as possible. But there's a certain segment of players who weren't quite ready for the release-- they wanted to finish raiding through AQ, or get their alts up to 60, or
get a PVP rank while they're still here(whoops, never mind, the patch makes that a no-no), and now they have more time to do so. - Lots of players are standing by Blizzard and willing to wait for new content. Blizzard has always put credo behind not releasing something "until it's ready" and there's every indication they're doing that here.
- Let's not forget Blizzard has also announced a new content patch before the expansion's release, including a new honor system, the new talent trees, and all kinds of other little extras. Releasing it before the expansion might give focus to something that would have been lost in the mix of Blood Elf and Draenei crowds.
- And finally, some players are glad Blizzard is avoiding the holiday season anyway. Not only are family and friends calling you away from Azeroth, but so are the PS3 and the Wii. If the expansion hits in January, at least that gives us a month to play our new $600 PS3 (before we abandon it for Outland, that is).
A delay? Blizzard, you suck!
- Sure, it's only a month-- it's no Duke Nukem, but a delay is a delay. Blizzard said Q4 2006, and now we find out they've messed up. And if they delay it a month now, who's to say that in January, they won't be saying Q4 2007? After all, we haven't heard a solid date yet, just "January"...
- A longer wait for the expansion means it's even less pointless to work for current endgame gear and raids now. Lots of players are already grinding a PVP system that won't matter in a month, and now they're grinding a PVP system that won't matter in three months.
- A few stalwarts planned their holidays around the release-- that's lost vacation time, and now my holiday plans are screwed!
- A delay just means the devs don't know what they're doing, say a few players. The talents sucked before the delay was announced, and there's no way they can fix those crappy talents in a month.
- A lot of players are sick of waiting already, and with all the great games coming out this season, Blizzard just lost their attention, maybe even for good.
But there's all the important arguments I could find for either side. Did I miss any? Are you thrilled or angry that it'll be 2007 before you see Outland? (of course I mean in non-beta form, you tester people you)

+20 To gay rating.

The Honor system changes are not affected by the delay, as the Honor system will be changed in the content patch. So having more time to get rank in PvP is not accurate.

I am really pissed, Im in my senior year of college and I have projects in every one of my classes I was planning on power leveling during the winter break. Then I can have fun at a nice casual 3 nights a week of raiding and drinking the other 4, and not releasing things untill they are done is complete BS anyone try to pass the first boss of BWL when it was released, or tried to kill C'Thun for the first few months? Yea ok ready when they release alright....

I'd have to agree with Lostmimic. I'm pretty skeptical of a well-polished game upon release, (with delays and all). I haven't played WoW in nearly half a year, and I'm looking forward to picking the game back up. I just hope Blizzard proves me wrong, and TBC will be good to go upon release...

I'm just hoping that the pre-TBC patch is the hunter review. It would be one hell of a shock to be dealing with that at the same time as new zones/mobs/instances etc. I don't think Blizzard have ever done a class review that was as extensive and game-changing as the upcoming hunter one, so I'd like some time to adjust, learn how to get the most out of it and most importantly, find ways around the bugs that won't be fixed for 2-6 months. :P

I guess I'm the only one that it doesn't affect. I'm currently deployed to the sandbox and see it as only an advantage that I may come back and have no level 70s yet. I haven't played for 6 months now because of the desert... I'm over my hump and can't wait to get back to playing, but if I was home... I'd be pissed because college winter break is prime time to play WoW b/c there's nothing else to do.
I just hope blizzard makes this expansion worthwhile, in the meantime since I might not be home on release i pre ordered the CE version when it was first available and should be able to enjoy the art book, dvd, and other goodies while I wait to play TBC.
My 2c.

Technically its not a delay. A release date was never anounnounced. Shops guessed, players speculated.
How can you delay something that was never given a release date?
Q4 2006 was an estimation, nothing solid.

Is the delay one month or two? Amazon had an avalability date for BC of Jan 30, 2007 this afternoon.

Personally this is better for me because Dec 16 is my last day of school and then I have family stuff for the rest o the end of the year. I may have to cancel my subscription until then just so I can concentrate on my school work so I don't end up repeating this class. The class was $1200 out of my pocket and that was after my financial aid. Wish me luck and who know s maybe it will come out late Dec early Jan and pleasantly surprise everyone anyway.

I am fine with the delay. I have found that most of the people that complain are in college or in high school. Being in the military, I work a 7-4 job monday-friday and this doesn't affect me at all. I am actually a little pleased. More time to farm in preparation and maybe enough enough time to bring a second alt to 60.
To all those that 'planned their december around the xpac'... wow... that's all I have to say... wow.

as pointed out, blizzard never said anything beyond a possible date somewhere in q4 2006. if you followed any releasedates of games you know they are delayed from time to time, live with it. the sads replies about how you planned on it being released at some point are pretty silly. you didn't know when it would be released because we didnt know anything except q4 and thats a long time, you were just guessing.
Prauche Oct 25th 2006 10:44AM
/Agree wholeheartedly with Mordiceius -- on THIS issue.
(As opposed to his position on PVE -> PVP realm transfers...LOL).
Melf Oct 25th 2006 11:05AM
Personally, i'm actually a little ok with the delay.
As i posted in my guild forums . . .
/cheer
1. more beta playing for me
2. can get deeper into Naxx before level grind
3. new patch = new spells and talents to play with in old instances before level grind!
4. new release will coincide with 6 week vacation from school!
5. already pre-ordered to beat the xmas rush, so no need to worry about my copy
Kaziel Oct 25th 2006 11:11AM
As a Beta tester for The Burning Crusade, I'm very much behind this release change. As much as it pains me to admit this, tBC is still not even close to release ready. There are still major game-breaking bugs in already tested content (e.g. the facial image from the UI that appears next to the health and mana bars on certain female naga in Zangarmarsh cause a crash to the desktop). And there are still three zones, three levels worth of skills and spells, four 5-man instances, and seven raid instances untested. We are simply not ready for release.
shadowsoul Oct 25th 2006 1:24PM
WOOT!!! Got warlord before the expansion. I'm glad they decided to delay the expansion. Now i can try and get in a PVE guild and buff myself up with some new weapons, rings, and trinkets
shadowpower Oct 25th 2006 4:35PM
i'm disappointed that it's gotten delayed but never surprised at this type of information from Blizzard. to be honest, if what kaziel said is true, i don't exactly expect them to release the expansion any time this decade. i've been playing wow for a year and a half and have been getting bored of it so i was really looking forward to new content. oh well. i'll probably get the expansion when it comes out. there are other games that i wanted to try that are scheduled to be released before or around that time, and if those games keep me entertained enough, i may change my mind.
Krianna Oct 25th 2006 6:42PM
Heh... Another armed forces person here... I know of at least three folks that "gave up" WoW until the expansion comes out-- Raiding is just about impossible when you vanish for months at a time. (Essex, forward deployed, Japan)
My BF and I have several characters that are just short of 60; I look forward to being able to actually SEE the launching of something in WoW! (The January time slot means I'll be a civilian, and will mark the first time I've seen anything like this from the start.)
Down side: I need to get a different XMas gift, since the Collector's Ed. won't be out in time.

So when is the Content Patch release date that will reset the PvP system? I just made Field Marshal and don't want to kill myself grinding for Grand Marshal if I don't have time to make it before the content patch release!!
