Breakfast Topic: New Classes
.jpg)
I never usually give much thought to new classes in World of Warcraft. Sure, they might be neat to mess around with, but I can't think of many bases that a new class would cover that isn't already fulfilled by an already existing class. Do we really need more crowd control classes? Or a class that can melee and cast damage spells?
However, Relmstein got me thinking that maybe there is room for some new blood with his recent post in which he presents some ideas for new classes. In Oblivion I created a battle mage, which was fun, but a mage in plate might make the community collapse under the weight of the massive flame-filled threads that would surely erupt. At the same time, if the battle mage is balanced right (don't ask me how to do that), it could be a fun class.
So what do you guys think? Could the next expansion use a couple new classes? If so, what kind of class should be included?

We need the Demonhunter like Illidian!

I have been thinking about new classes as well but can't think of tanyhting that would fit within WoW...however I did come up with what I think is a good idea - have class specialization! I know talents spec does do that sorta but not in any obvious ways. I can't think of anything really good atm but say like when you get to lvl 40 you can choose between a "good" class and a "bad" class...say Hunter, they could decide between Sportsman, who kills for the fun and thirll of it, or Protector, who protects...they would have seperate talents trees and skill sets...blah blah blah...it's 7am i cant think right now.

Shadowknight. Warlocks with weak dots and no pets, in plate. If you ever played EQ, you realize that this can be balanced pretty easily.

Bah, sorry for the repost. Freaking confirmation emails.

I'd like to see rangers. Sort of a hunter/rogue mix. Not as good at stealth/melee as a rogue, a bit different of a ranged experience than hunter(poison arrows, fire arrows, no traps, considerably fewer CC abilities), and none of that pet garbage.
I always enjoy playing "archer" classes, and the one thing I hate about hunters is being so dependent on my pet for soloing.

Monks. Complete with a bunch of new fist weapons.
I'd say something else, but I'll just leave it alone for now.

Didn't Blizzard say something about a new class for the blood elves called "Spellbreaker" or something, a long time ago? Was that like the equivalent to the new dervish class on Guild Wars?

Witch doctor, a kind of twisted/evil version of shaman. Bonus to alchemy. uses totems that inflicts curses/poisons/diseases. Some implementation of a voodoo doll would be cool. Mainly source of damage is DOTs. Should fit into the lore (the troll lore atleast)

Compared to many MMORPGs, WoW is somewhat thin when it comes to class selection. I think there is room for more classes. My ideas are fairly standard, but do fit well into the lore and setting imho.
Necromancer: A pet based caster somewhat similar to the warlock, but specializing in undead rather than demons. Potential problem... making it unique and different from the warlock.
Monk: As previously stated, a melee/light armor (leather or possibly even cloth) based DPS class which specializes in fist, thrown, and staff based weapons. Problem... making it somehow different (other than cosmetically) from the rogue class.
Bard/Minstrel: A jack of all trades that specializes in buffing the group/raid with the aid of music and various instruments (mandolin/drums/pipes/whatever). This would be a truly new addition to the game imho, and would have the least in common with existing classes. Limited to chainmail (possibly leather) or lower, and with a limited selection of weapons (1h swords, 1h maces, daggers, staves would be my suggestion... possibly thrown as well, but no bows/guns or 2handers).
Anyway, those are my ideas. I also like the idea of a ranged class that doesn't rely on pets, like the ranger suggested earlier.

Witch Doctor would be pretty awesome and Spellbreakers should have been added to TBC.

It's interesting to note that while Oblivion gives you numerous classes - many of them do not get used. They tend to overlap and blur so much that a lot of the pre-conceived classes just aren't more useful than others beyond giving you a different RP experience.
I think an interesting change would be to add something similar to D&D's Prestige Classes...sure talents specialize your class, but not quite as much as taking new levels/talents/skills in a new class that's still related to your base.
On another note, wouldn't ninjas fall under the category of rogue? And aren't monks just unarmed warriors (though I'll grant you there's nearly NO support for unarmed combat or monk-style hand-to-hand weapons in the game).

Necromancer, that summons dead creatures to fight for him. Like in Diablo 2 or Guild Wars. My favorite class in those two games.
Mordiceius Nov 6th 2006 10:07AM
I'll wait for hero classes.
Seltor Nov 6th 2006 10:08AM
All of the sugestions on thet blog post were HORRIBLE, most useless and... well... stupid.
A class that is meant for crowd control? One that is meant for AoE buffs? I can see guilds forcing players to play that, but I don't see anyone picking those just for fun. Not to mention soloing.
Necromancer? There's a warlock right there, no need for a necromancer.
Ninjas and pirates? Please...
I suppose the monk would be the one class that sort of makes sense, but it'd have to be called something else.
carpeicthus Nov 6th 2006 10:15AM
When will we get to be Ninja-Pirates?
carpeicthus Nov 6th 2006 10:15AM
The problem with a ninja is that a real ninja, at level 1, could PWN a 40-man level 70 raid of non-ninjas. True fact.
gegga Nov 6th 2006 10:25AM
Would Ninjas be especially good at ninja looting? That would make the class interesting, to say the least! :P
monkeywraith Nov 6th 2006 10:33AM
@ carpeicthus: damn right they could.
@ sylythn: yes, ninjas are basically covered by rogues, but no, monks are not just unarmed warriors. monks restrict themselves to cloth (maybe leather, but not usually) as to allow freer movement. a monk class would be pretty cool, a melee class in cloth based on speed and dodge rather than stealth and crit.
@david nelseon: great post .... but battle mage = moonkin ;)
