Disabled players in World of Warcraft
You know, we spend a lot of time on this blog, or the forums, or wherever, complaining about a variety of problems in WoW. Be it class balance, server downtime, etc...and while that is a fun and worthwhile activity (thank god it is or I wouldn't have this great part-time job), it is nice to see something like this floating around the WoW community. Awemane from the Vek'nilash realm suffers from Spinal Muscular Atrophy Type II. It is a disease very similar to Muscular Dystrophy, and Awemane has lost the ability to play most games. The action games simply have become too complex for someone with Awemane's illness. So that leaves RPGs, but even RPGs have become a chore, as they are starting to add more action fighting elements. Knowing that, one of Awemane's friends turned him onto World of Warcraft, and due to the customizable interface, the ability to play in a window to allow for a mouse-controlled on-screen keyboard and several other disabled-friendly features, Awemane is able to play Warcraft. And he plays it well.
Best of all, the nature of an MMORPG allows him to communicate with others and have a bit of a social experience in addition to the game itself. As he can't leave his house often, WoW is a great way for him to meet people. Awemane also comments that nearly all of Blizzard's games have been handicap friendly. This is an aspect of gaming that Blizzard really got right.
I never really considered how difficult it would be to play a videogame with any kind of disability, and I think it is fantastic that World of Warcraft is available for someone like Awemane. Fantastic work by Blizzard!

A most excellent point. I have a disability as well (nowhere as severe as Awemane's ... I am missing 3 fingers on my right hand and have relatively limited range of motion in my right arm), and I have found most console games far too difficult to play, mostly because I am unable to completely remap the controls.
Many PC games, and Blizzard's games in particular (as noted) are great in this regard and it is something I really appreciate. I still remember being worried I would be unable to complete the Hunter epic quest (in particular, I was very worried about two of the kiting fights), but with some serious hotbar and keybinding modifications from my usual methods of play I was able to dust all 4 demons in one Saturday. =)
Posts like Awemane's sure help put the world in some perspective, huh? ^_^

One area that Blizzard fails in with regard to disabilities is color blindness. Most software sold needs to meet requirements for people with colorblindness. I don't know if that includes games, but there is a heavy heavy reliance on being able to discern green and red, purple and blue, etc. We have a guy in our guild who is constantly unable to target the right corehound near lucifron because he can't see the targeting icon when you select the mob. Even then new targeting icons that you can place on the mob manually are difficult, but at least they are shapes not just colors.
Imagine trying to determineif an item is an epic or not, but not being able to see the color?
Blizz could do a better job at fixing this problem that I'm sure vexes a number of the WoW community.

I have "mild case" Duchene Muscular Dystrophy, I just have weaker muscles, poor balance but I need to use a wheelchair when uptown and such because my muscles cramp pretty quick, but I can walk and do normal things on my own, such as using the washroom, having a shower etc. so it has no effect on my gameplay, but no one on my server, nor my guild knows I have it, I have been in this guild for about a year and I am sure they would understand it, but I would just rather not share it with them, not trying to be selfish or anything but I don't want 50 odd people sending me tells asking about it. So in my case its a mental and emotional issue, not so much a physical one.
P.S. Im pretty sure a few guildies of mine go on this website, so I guess they will know about my little secret, lol

I've heard of the problem with color blindness before, and I remember seeing a mod a while back that, at least, helped a little. Here is the link:

I hope this can help at least some people.

Kudos to Blizz and it's great this guy can game. I recently read on Slashdot about an avid console gamer who is now getting arthritis and says he thinks he does not have much time left to game. I'd be devastated if I could no longer play games, esp MMOs…
