Around Azeroth: Why can't we be friends?

Fisherelf Trippy sends in this shot of an afternoon of fishing excitement in Booty Bay, with a Tauren fishing buddy. On a PvP server, such a peaceful moment rarely lasts, though apparently these two got in a half hour of fishing before someone came through slaughtering members of the alliance.

Well, it is peaceful as long as you stay in Booty Bay... That is one of the only places Horde/Alliance won't gank (98.56% of the time).

I wish blizzard would give players the ability to communicate between factions. I mean...what if my friend and I are on opposing factions. Does this mean I shouldn't be able to say hello to him?

You can communicate -- sort of -- across factions. Emotes. You can /flirt or /greet or /hug or whatever else you'd like to do to the opposing faction via /emotes.
Not the most expressive and personalized way to do it, but you can. I have not tried to /me [insert txt] the other faction to see if that works or not. I'll try that in BB with a pal tonight and get back to you as to whether it works. (Unless someone else has tried it and posts.)

if you could communicate between factions, imagine the PVP ramifications...
you could be playing Alliance but really be allied to the Horde, running interference or performing recon for a party about to raid IF or whatever.
but i agree... i wish i could talk to my friend who "just had to be a pally"

I would also like to be able to talk to the opposing faction - if only to say "NO NO NO ... pleaseeeee don't kill me! :)

It seems Blizzard has painted themselves into a corner on the faction communication issue. Both sides already have quest givers that are members of the other faction's races. So right now, the only reason you can't communicate with the other faction is "we don't want you to." I guess they think it would lead to some sort of exploiting, but there's nothing to stop that outside of the game. The official forums would be a good example.

More importantly, think of the potential for escalation of conflict in the real world. I know when I've been ganked and corpse camped by alliance that I have spewed forth many expletives, but couldn't effectively direct any personal attacks on the gankers because of the language barrier. I am sure if there was cross-faction communication you could have people taking insults and making insults far too personally, which could lead to "real world" fights (not too mention spamming the hell out of the general and trade channels). In a post-Columbine world, is it really that far of a stretch to think that members of opposite factions that happen to be in the same area of the world get so mad at each other in the game that they go seek vengeance after logging out? Sadly, I think that is entirely possible, and imagine the potential liability for Blizzard in the "fantasy world collides with real world" wrongful death lawsuit.

Using /emote works well enough for local communication.
My 49 Shaman had an /emote conversation with a 60 NE Priest over the weekend. I'm no carebear... usually red=dead. But I needed Honey Ripple and she was farming Ghost Mushrooms. It was nice to type /e knows you could kill him easily.
Over the course of the ten minutes we were in the same room, we coexisted nicely. She even assisted me when I had a bad pull.
I wouldn't want to make a habit of it. I'm on a PvP server for a reason. But as a changeup it was a refreshing break.

it used to work about 8 patches ago. Was pretty funny.
Elwynn Nov 28th 2006 12:30PM
You can type /me or /emote then txt to express what you are doing and/or feelling if there isn't an actual emote for it.
andy Nov 28th 2006 12:19PM
does "/me thinks you stink of cow sh*te" actually work? because if so, many a tauren i have annoyed :D
Dave Nov 28th 2006 12:21PM
If you mind control someone (yes i know this is priests only) you can talk to them through the /e "your message here" command. other than that a lot of servers have a server wide teamspeak/vent that anyone can join...just have to know the ip and such
Elwynn Nov 28th 2006 12:36PM
You also can use the /me or /emote to talk to the oposite side (alience/hord) It really works and is a little fun and easy way to anoy people with it...lol
Kaelwryn Nov 28th 2006 12:53PM
/emote doesn't work crossfaction.
'/emote teabags you.' Will not be seen by the opposing faction for instance.
Ari Nov 28th 2006 12:58PM
#15 is right-
The /em looks like this to the opposing faction:
(Your char)"...makes some strange gestures."
henstar Nov 28th 2006 2:04PM
A "/me [emote]" to a member of the opposing faction will look like "[You] performs some strange gestures" or something to that effect.

We can't be friends because you're ugly, smelly, and disgusting! That's right, I'm talking to you, elf! For the Horde!
