WoW Moviewatch: The Burning Crusade opening cinematic
After premiering in spectacular cam-o-vision on YouTube, and then officially premiering on Spike's VGA Awards last night, Blizzard has released The Burning Crusade opening cinematic to the masses. Head on over to the World of Warcraft site to view the cinematic in either Flash or DivX.
The short preview starts with a voice over that lore-fiends will quickly come to understand as Illidan's. To say that he's a little upset to have been imprisoned for 10,000 years, then exiled, and then have us show up on his doorstep expecting cookies and eggnog is a gross understatement.
We're taken across the Blasted Lands to the Dark Portal before fading out and coming up on a Draenei Paladin, preparing for what lies ahead. That scene then cuts to a Blood Elf lovingly playing with a Mana Wyrm, before she consumes its arcane energies. What follows is a quick succession of battle scenes featuring the Draenei paladin, what appears to be the Orc from the original WoW cinematic, the Blood Elf, a human mage (who wonderfully sheeps his opponent), and an undead warlock who apparently has no love for the gurgly little Murlocs.
Finally, we come to Illidan, who leaps up from his Hamlet-like pondering of a skull and shows us his full glorious self before admonishing us with a loud and gravelly, "You are not prepared!"
This is a fantastic cinematic, and only makes me long for a full animated World of Warcraft movie, and makes the month-and-two-days we have left to wait for the expansion to hit stores seem like an eternity.

The quality of Blizzard's cinematics still amaze me. Great job.

Downloading now, can't wait to see it since Illidan was one of my favorite characters from WCIII.

*Illidan sits on a rock, throws a skull away, jumps up and shows his awesome but terrible power*
Illidan: YOU...ARE...NOT...PREPARED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Me: Fair enuff.
*walks back through the dark portal*

I have to agree that a movie of the this 3D caliber would be amazing. The the graphics are so wonderful I am guessing it would be quite a cinematic undertaking to produce such a film - meaning years and years, even with the technology we have today. I cannot imagine how long it took to produce just this small WoW opening. I think, 'soup-to-nuts', it took 5 years for Monsters Inc - granted that was a while ago and we have made great strides in CPUs and GPUs.

Brim, that's EXACTLY how I felt when watching it. You really get the impression that any of our 60's walking through the portal are going to regret it. Illidan is one angry guy, and I'm not sure I'm going to want to mess with him in the near future.

Mr. Illidan, is it can be hugs tiem now plees?

Such an amazing opening. I would love to see Blizzard expand on cinematics, but I know the time and cost involved would probably prohibit that. Instead, how about some in-game rendered cinematics? I know I'm not the only one who wants more. Still, I'm drooling over TBC.

I wonder what they have in store for the opening of the dark portal...

I loved the cinematic and I really love how there was a real-time choir! Made the feel of it all the sweeter.
It's cool to see Blizzard releases the cinematics for all to view, outside of just the product. Thanks Bliz!
(Whoo hoo for the mage stardom! Sheep him! Sheep him now!)

I always hoped that when completing some of the more lengthy and rewarding quests their would be a cinematic

I loved the cinematic as well. One of my favorite parts of it is the BE looking at the orb of mana. The look upon her face right at that moment says a lot, I think.
Also, the draenei paladin was great (and I really want that mace). And I loved the Warlock killing the murlocs without even glancing back, heh.

@ Gunn - not quite a cinematic, but there's a Horde quest involving Sylvanus that has her breaking out in song. Peruse through a couple day's ago posts here for the linkage.
Yeah, I love the cinematics. Initially when I got my wife involved in WoW, she brushed off my attempts to show her the intro movie. She just wanted to start playing. Just recently she was surfing on Youtube or such and saw scads of WoW movies. I think she saw a snippet of the original movie and wondered what that was. Grinning, I had her log into WoW and click the cinematic button. She was thrilled. Last night, she was enraptured with the new cinematic...that choir was fantastic. Hopefully that's the same music Blizz will be using.

A lock killing everyone with no effort, very realistic cinematic.
OutlandishTrendz Dec 14th 2006 3:29PM
Ok, the orc dies from arrows, but then flashes to a mage? Anyone know the answer to that?
Kyle Dec 14th 2006 4:08PM
The mage is a different scene, Trendz. That's all.
