Breakfast Topic: I quit!
I've noticed an astonishing number of players on the forums claiming, at least, to be ending their relationship with the World of Warcraft that we all know and love. Complaints are all over the map -- warlocks are overpowered, warriors are underpowered, fear needs to be nerfed, too much lag, too much downtime, too few world events... Indeed, everyone has their beef with the game, but with the recent patch throwing a lot of things up in th are, a number of players seem to think it's just not worth coming back. But what about you? You're reading a game-related blog, which hints that you're still in the game. Do you see the game's last straw somewhere in the immediate future, or are all of these quitting announcements dramatic nonsense?Filed under: Breakfast Topics, Features

I'm on a temporary break from WOW because I am focusing on another game right now. I've never leveled a character to 60. My main is only 34. It's not really that addictive a game, and there is very little compelling me to play: dull quests, irritating and drawn out searches for party members for dungeons (despite the clunky new LFG system), griefers, etc. Exploration and quests are what I like, however good, well-written quests are so few and far between and my exploration is constantly interrupted by players from the opposing faction. More often than not, my WOW play time is frustrating rather than fun. If I want fun, I'll go play other games for now.
I do know a very hardcore player who is going to quit playing WOW. This is one of the guys who was originally bugging me for so damn long to get the game. His reason is that the game as it is now, is totally unrecognisable from the game he started playing more than a year ago. He has multiple level 60s and is in a serious raiding guild. He says that Blizzard has lost the plot in terms of why people play Blizzard games.
Now, few of the new changes affect me profoundly. I've never cared for PvP; WOW's PvP system is an example of horrible game design which doesn't encourage good sportsmanship and appreciation of skill, rather it encourages bullying and griefing. The Class changes -- meh. People love to complain about everything; I'll adapt to the changes.
Those announcements by players who say they're going to quit come from a minority -- the hardcore that read the forums and bother to write about it. Blizzard will stll rake in its millions. To be honest, Blizzard should stop listening to the whingers on the forums, because those people do not represent the majority of players. They are a very small, very vocal minority.

I've quit a handful of times since release. I've also never bothered to take a toon to 60. I can't stand milling around for hours looking for a group, but it is pretty nigh impossible to do dungeons on one's own, much less many of the quests. I usually get to around mid-fourties before I start thinking "Hmm, maybe another alt would suffice."
The thing to keep in mind though is this: it is a game. Not only is it merely a game, but it is one with over seven million subscribers (I'm wondering how many of those are the free accounts that gold spamers are abusing). Anyway, not all of those people are always going to play this game. While it is quite entertaining, it is fairly time consuming and, if taken to the extreme, life consuming. If anything, those of us who either take breaks or jump ship altogether are the healthy minority.
Those that quit because they don't understand game mechanics enough to see that most of the moves that Blizzard makes are in the interest of players (writ large) are too shortsighted to be bothered with anyway. Good riddance.

I used to be a hardcore WoW gamer, but with me moving into the work force, I have nowhere near as much time as I did before to put into WoW. In many respects I love how they are making WoW more casual for those with less time, but still allowing for the hardcore raiders to do what they love. I can however see why a lot of people are angry that TBC is really a reset. Tier 4 is the new Tier 0.
I still plan to play b/c of my friends, but at the end of the day the things that really disappoint me about WoW is the lack of real PvP in relation to Guilds.
I would love to see Guild vs Guild battles, a GvG ranking system, guild levels, guild halls, and a once every 2 week event where guilds could sign up to siege the opposing faction's base/castle/guild hall, similar to Lineage 2's Castle Sieges. And I don't want them to be fair!! I'm so sick of people crying b/c they think something is unfair. If a 40 well geared people roll your 40 not so well geared guild, bring 50-60 people next time. Add some real politics to this game!!!

I do admit im not too happy with the patch. priest didnt get much love while other class got buffed up good beside the warrior lol. it seem like they didnt give much love to the two most important class.
But im not Quiting!!!! i love the game. it take the stress out on long study session(college student)
So far imo i think wow is the best MMORPG out there. they have all the right ingredient to it. Previously ive tried Final fantasy XI, guild wars, DAOC. but non actually grab me on as wow.
I CANT WAIT FOR THE EXPANSION!!!!!!!!! too bad it comes out when school start again :-(

My freind from ingame who has 2 level 60 characters and many alts not so far off has just quit 2 days ago and has given me his charcters.
I think blizzard really needs to shape up and sort things out. I think the Burning crusade will be good for the game in the long term but its going to cause alot of problems for the coming months after the release date.
Its going to be unplayable for the first few weeks maybe even a month or two because of the volume of people in the new area's leaving azeroth behind, will cause server lagg and crashes.
Lets just hope blizzard replaces some of the older servers like my own which has been unplayble since the 2.01 patch ((Earthen ring EU)) With constant server crashes, restarts and shutdowns its been impossible to compleat raids.

I stopped playing WoW back in June. I had a level 50 lock and just started to get bored. Seriously, around the early 20s the game just becomes too open. I really liked how there was an optional, set path with an actual storyline concerning the Defias. But after that, it just whimpers away. If the quest structure was redone where it WAS possible to have a linear, but not mandatory, progression with a single story, it would be a much better game.
That said, I plan on starting my account back up over my holiday break, I need something to do.

I don't really play as much as i used to, for a couple of reasons.
Firstly, our guild disentegrated somewhat due to some liking Naxx and others not. Many felt there was no point raiding due to the incoming expansion, with Naxx loot not being worth the effort given what kinda blues and epics we can be expecting at level 70. I am in that same boat. I just don't see the effort being rewarded as it normally would were there not an expansion coming out soon.
The PvP patch, while fun for the first week, has lost its attraction for me. I liked some of the talents, but i didn't like getting 2-3 shotted in the BGs. But i did like 'free' epics. Now that they're harder, it's much less appealing now. I still think it's a very fair (if not still a too easy system) but i can't be bothered with it anymore.
Thirdly, none of my characters will hit level 70. My Draenei Shaman however will. Thus, the only thing i can really do at the moment which won't feel like a waste of time is to do what i can to improve my Shaman's potential success. I've got the gear i need, mostly, now i just need more ore to help kickstart my Jewelcrafting. Much of the past few days i've spent in WoW has been farming Iron and Mithril. Thorium will start next week, i wager.
Thus, what's there really to do? Nothing much in WoW. I do not however feel that the game is dead to me. It's merely on hiatus. The recent BC cinematic release has me VERY excited about the expansion. A lot is riding on it, i believe. Each of the three points i made above refers to things rectified and/or cause by the expansion. It's very big.
Right now the transition period we're in is incredibly unstable. The DPS buffs mixed with the lack of stam buffs to match makes PvP a very lopsided affair. It's very very messy, and i don't blame anyone for a second for not finding this patch period less than fun. But to not want to pick up WoW again when the expansion comes out? That i cannot understand. If people are quitting because of something arising from this pre-BC/post-patch insanity... well that in itself is insane.
Weak threats with no basis. Shaman and Warriors still need more buffs though >_>

I'm currently on a break from WOW. Been focusing on my educational and personal life with a few different games thrown in the mix. I may come back to WOW in the future, but I really don't miss it right now. I don't really care about the expansion and it won't drive me back. I'll play again when I get bored of what I'm playing now and have the free time too.

me and my girlfriend have been playing for a year - we have had fun tryign out all the races and classes and have settled down for the past few months and taken mains to almost 50 (we both work and have a family so WoW is just fun for us - we are not hardcore).
WoW is a lot fun to play but we only make use a part of the game beause we play just the 2 of us together. We cannot do instances (and from the sound of things they sound too much hassle anyway) and have no interest in PvP or battlegrounds.
The game is loosing it's way and we are becoming bored. The changes just annoy us as every patch changes the game and we have to spend tim trying to figure out what has changed - the release notes never cover everything and learning all the talent repec combos is a pain.
It is not worth the money anymore and i am going to look for another game we can play together - if anyone has any ideas then please let me know.

maybe some of you guys should play the game to 60 and play at 60. that is where most the game lies and you cant get a good enough representation from the game if you arent 60. thats where all the focus is, end game.
Ged Dec 16th 2006 2:59PM
Like the guy above basically, tho my account is still going with a lvl 52 hunter. My guild dispanded and I got into a raidning guild but I couldn't be stiffed to level, and I went back to Warcrafy 3:Frozen Throne. I'll be going back to asap because of the new patch, but my computer is down, and I'm working from my dad's laptop. So I suppose for me the patch was actually a breath of new life:)

I play WOW with a bunch of RL friends and the higher levels help out the new guys with Qs and we have a great time. I love it and its a great way to de-stress from playing FPS games. Moaners will moan no matter what game they are playing. BC will be excellent and there is still a lot of Azerorth for us to explore!

I for one am on the verge of quitting. I had a 60 warlock, but my accoutn got jacked during one of blizzard's banning sprees and when I reported it they had already permabanned my account, apparently with no hope of return. So I started up a new account, got a priest (they looked fun) and leveled him to 45. Then the patch hit. Now, priests were already pretty underpowered, and seeing the boosts to every class, but priest (and warrior) just angered me. I also noticed that Blizz failed to nerf warlocks, something that has been serverely needed. Despite the advantages of some classes, I played a lock, and it is true, they are god mode. Also, Blizzard has an opportunity with the expansion to give some enw classes, did they take that opportunity? nope. They have an opportunity to perhaps level out the classes, are they gonna take it? nope. And the new "enhancements" brought with the patch...well they mostly speak for themselves. My main beef with blizz is that they really just nerfed the entire freakin game in my opinion. Maybe they'll fix it, maybe they won't. I probably will play to the end of my subscription and see what happens at that point in time. Hopefully Blizz won't decimate anything else untill then.
gonzo Dec 16th 2006 11:57AM
I'm really tired of Blizzard's nerf mentality. Instead of nerfing a class (and upsetting everyone who rolled that class), why can't they just buff everyone else (and make all those players happier)? I happen to play a warlock, and it's the only class I've enjoyed. I know we'll be hit by the nerf bat soon, and when that happens I'm sure my interest in this game will drop with it.
Ryan D. Dec 16th 2006 12:13PM
#10...
If Blizzard makes every other class better, the standard upon which you grade the value of a warlock will change completely - by buffing every other class, you are effectively nerfing the odd-class out.
That being said, I kinda wish there were more world events personally.. I don't really mind though. WoW is what it is.. it's a game, and like all other games, there are strategies and the like one can utilize to overcome difficulties. The only time I'll quit is once it stops being fun.
michel Dec 16th 2006 12:31PM
I'm not quitting. but the late move against addon really annoyed me.
I know Blizzard need to control players to ultimately everyone are happy, but it seems too much as a punition against players. players paying.
wow was a very opened game, into its core, its interface and world.
I long for more politics, for more guilds managements tools, for Real world event (Onyxia burning Southshore, one evening, BOUM !)
Blizzard has to have the nerve to sometimes create a Surprise not everyone will be able to see but just enough often to give a reasonable luck to see a great event and not too much often to not annoy people wanting to finish a quest.
it's their job to find balance.
I'm still loving to explore the world, find little details, read stories, playing slowly to have fun and waiting for the expansion.
Bunkai Dec 16th 2006 2:14PM
I am not thrilled with all the patch changes, but it's a "living" game and will continue to evolve as time goes on. Once Blizz has gotten to the point of not evolving the game any longer, that means that they have ost interest, and that is when it will be time to quit.
As for the whiners in the forums, I wish they all would leave. It wouldn't even be 10% of the entire WoW population, and it would keep me from having to weed through the crap posts to find something worth reading.
The fact is, that classes are not balanced, and should not be balanced. If everyone was equal, then there'd be no reason for everyone to not just be Human/Orc Warriors. What would life be like if everyone was exactly the same?
I've expressed my fair share of unhappiness about the changes, or lack there of, that my class received in teh patch, but what I've come to realize, is that the people that cry about the need to have their class buffed or some other class nerfed just need to learn to play.
NO CRYBABIES!!!
