Do we HAVE to kill Illidan?
.jpg)
While roaming around the blood elf starting area in the middle of the night, I got into a discussion with some other neophyte elves about Illidan. Basically, we didn't want to kill him.
See, Kael'Thas is rumored to have gone insane, and Vashj was never too good in the first place, but Illidan ... well, what Illidan says in the Burning Crusade introduction is pretty accurate. He was locked up for thousands of years for being reckless, was nearly killed trying to kill the totally evil Arthas, and then when he finally gets to Outland and is able to relax, millions of warriors invade his country from Azeroth to look for his loot. He doesn't seem to pose much of a threat to Azeroth, so why is it so important that we metaphorically and literally break into his house and rummage through his stuff? Illidan's admittedly many mistakes (creating a new Well of Eternity, consuming Gul'Dan's skull, dealing with Kil'Jaeden) were made out of recklessness and selfishness, not outright "Yay, let's destroy the world!" evil. There have been quite a few forum posts on the same subject.
My fellow blood elves suggested that we be given the opportunity to ally with Illidan and his crew. To join them, you would have to forsake your allegiance, your homeland and your faction. You could still communicate with your old friends, but you wouldn't be able to group with them. You'd have different profession recipes, quests, towns, and maybe even different talent options. One even suggested that we could be double agents - we could still hang out in Orgrimmar or Ironforge, but have a chance to be detected and permanently cast out and maybe even lose some items.
The instances could change too. Instead of fighting Illidan in the Black Temple, you could defend him from Kil'Jaeden's minions. And who says we have to preserve the timeline in the Caverns of Time? That's boring. Let's see what happens if Archimonde wins the battle of Hyjal and Thrall dies as a kid!
Of course, that isn't going to happen. World of Warcraft is a pretty static world and you don't have many real character development options. The one big one we do have - the ability to go to war with factions - has caused enough complaints (see: Bloodsail pirates angry about goblin questgivers) and this isn't the Elder Scrolls series. Still, it's fun to speculate about.
Then again, maybe Illidan is right, and we're just not prepared.

I dont think we DO kill him. Im betting that he is furthering his plans to destroy northrend in order to kill Arthas. Or destroy Azeroth to kill arthas. Hes insane now. But I think we just stop his plans rather than killing him.
I think he will try to destroy Arthas again because of this in-game script:
I am afraid that the loss to Arthas proved to be his breaking point. Madness has embraced him, Remulos. He replays the events in his mind a thousand times per day, but in his head, he is the victor and Arthas is utterly defeated. He is too far gone, old friend. I fear that the time may soon come that our bond is tested and it will not be as it was at the Well in Zin-Azshari
I think it will pose a threat to Azeroth ( which is part of the reason he was stopped at Dalaran). And that gives us incentive to fight him.
And I dont think we will kill him because a designer at blizcon said:
You don't so much "kill" him as much as you sorta get in his way.
Also, he could be trying to resurrect the Well of Eternity.... again.

Blizzard already mentioned in an interview that we don't kille him. In fact, we cant. All that they said was that me mostly "get in his way". Can't wait to see that!

Ok, I was typing too fast. I'm sorry for the typos above!

i was wondering the same thing, Why ARE we going to outland in the first place? from a game persepective "yay phat loots" but in the history of the world messing with the dark portal has never lead to anything good.

Will it be possible to kill Illidan in the Burning Crusade?
Illidan doesn't think so. As a matter of fact, he's probably thinking about destroying your character for simply entertaining the thought.
Straight from the FAQ

Yeah, I would totally join up with Illidan. He's awesome and at any point he can just flip out and kill stuff. He's also totally sweet. He's my favorite char in the World (of Warcraft).
Seriously, he gave up so much to help the people of Azeroth and they just consider him a bad guy in return... talk about ungratefull. What did he ever do that was bad? Besides the well thing, that was an eternity ago. Forgive already.
Vellocet Dec 19th 2006 7:25PM
Yeah, Illidan lost it awhile ago. It'll be like, putting down a rabid dog! Come on kids! It'll be fun!
And besides, if you've got loots, you're gonna have to defend them.

I had this discussion with a friend when they first announced Illidan as the final boss of BC. I pretty much told my friend that it'd be a huge bummer if Illidan died because he's just so freakin' cool. He's the bad guy you want to be, not the bad guy you want to wtfpwn (like Arthas, he was always a whiney beeyatch). I hope the "get in his way" rumor is true.

Illidan is now the puppet of the Burning Legion. He's getting prepared in Outland to take out Arthas. After he has dispatched Arthas he will try to claim the rest of Azeroth in the name of the Burning Legion.
I feel sorry for him, but, he's crazy and he needs to go down. ;)

Killing Illidan is very similar to the way I feel about killing Van Cleeft. If you guys follow the story for that quest line you realize that you are nothing more than a pawn for the nobility! They didn't pay him for rebuilding Stormwind!!
Mind you, that doesn't stop me. I want the Cruel Barb!

When/how did Illidan become the puppet of the Burning Legion?
Donner Dec 20th 2006 12:03PM
Well Ive talked to some people who are playing beta and Ive heard he's kinda like major Domo once your raid beats him he flies away. Thats just what Ive heard though and I dont know if I entirely trust the source of this info.
Donner Dec 20th 2006 12:31PM
It could be like Onxyia and the attunement quest. The ally version at least I wanted to kill that bitch once she kill Windsor THAT FREAKING BITCH KILLED HIM! But yeah could be kinda like that.

Illidan plain and simple... is the badass of Warcraft. I am glad you can't kill him. Kind of like Vader in starwars. He is so bad, he is good. And you hated to see him die.
On a side note. I wouldn't mind if they had a defector status or faction. I am sure Blizz would F it up though. But even eq2 had a quest line you could do to switch your faction if you choose to do so. Or in Eq1, if you killed or did certain quests you where suddenly hated by X faction/group of people.
It was actually a huge part of the game. Guilds where even based around that fact that they where hated by a certain faction. Gladly killing Tunare in the plane of growth. Making their guild hated by all "good" factions in the game. Would be even cooler if they did have it and eventually you could learn other faction's language over time. Even if it was broken version of the language.
I mean, they have the Bucs in the game, makes you hated with the goblins. But who likes those little freaks anyways? Either way, I think the game would be a lot better if you had more of a choice faction wise like that.
And umm, armor dye. Yeah, I know.. has nothing to do with the topic. But not looking like the other mages/hunters in the guild and pvp casters would be a hell of a lot better then whats going on now. They should change that too.

To add on to what i was saying earlier.
Innoruuk, one of the dieties of everquest was the prince of hate. He had his own followers that simply hated everyone one else not aligned with them. More then simply.. we are horde, or we are alliance. We have a total disdain for everyone else. You are for or against us.
Those that followed Illidan pretty much felt the same.
The game would be soo much better imo, if it had that type of character choice. Not simply, we are horde and bad..but technically good. Or Alliance and good.. but really evil. I'd rather just straight up wreck everyone else who wasn't on my side. Hell... if anything I would love it if the Forsaken at some point of reaching a certain goal would turn on the rest of the horde to an extent. That would be interesting. Least imo..

Arthas > Illidan
Tainted_Mage Dec 23rd 2006 1:03PM
Alright heres the one thing that doesn't make sense to me................Illidan is Kael'Thas's Lord and Kael'Thas is allied with Illidan but at the same time is allied with the Horde so what does that mean if you storm Illidan's place you'll have to kill the Prince of BE?
And can BE kill Illidan's minions and him if their prince is allied with them?

So, all we was not wanting happened like... some years ago, and now Illidan is nothing than a joke... thats sad... i'm still hoping that he come back in future, now that Cataclysm is near and Malfurion is comming back i hope he should go and try to find his brother... and i hope that Illidan could have one good end or even come back to the Alliance as a good guy...
