Breakfast Topic: WTB civility in the chat channel
hippie over on WoW LJ asks an interesting question: We all know that Barrens chat is pretty much the worst place to go for good conversation (and while it lasted, the global LFG channel wasn't really that great either). But hippie wonders where the best place is to go to talk.Personally, the best conversation I've had in the game I've had... on guild chat. Cop out? Maybe. In that case, I'll say some of the best conversations I've had about the game have been in the general Molten Core channel. In there, I've chatted with others about guild progression, bragged about our downings, and even gotten confirmations on a few boss bugs and glitches. Most people in there seem pretty helpful and adult (not surprising, probably, considering everyone in there might actually be an adult).
So where have you found good chat in the game-- or isn't there any to find at all?

Ive found ashenvale and darnassus area to be full of nice people to group and chat with. When your on vent with your buddy you kind of miss most (if not all) of the ingame chat. Ive noticed that as you get closer to stormwind and ironforge the chat gets really bad. All the areas around it are the same way to.

I still miss Teldrassil chats... Somehow the Night Elves are always fun to talk with in general. It goes from different kinds of soup to different music styles. I hate people that don't talk english well enough to have a decent conversation.
"Hi there!"
"good eqoeupments have u!"
"Thank you, yours is not bad either"
"can i have free gold plx?"
"Go farm some yourself"
"i dont now wat famr is"
"Goodbye"
"wat is farm"
"I said, goodbye"
"plzplzplzplzplz some gold plZ!"
Those guys always piss me off.

First thing I do when I log on with a new character is run a little macro:
/leave 1
/leave 2
/leave 3
/leave 4
/leave 5
/leave 6
The only time I ever used to /join was for the LFG Channel, before the LFG Tool came out - which is one of the greatest things Blizzard has ever done.
Now, if I could only /leave yell....

You can turn yell off. It's in there somewhere. There's no /leave for it... but you can turn off say/yell/party/guild/officer/everything.
The chat windows are very customizable.

To 5, right click the general tab, go to filers>channels and untick yell.

The best - my guild chat, of course.
The worst has to be Battlegrounds chat. I have never seen more mean spirited backbiting in my life.
There's the guy who blames everything on Defense but never offers to actually help with it - he's a favorite.
Then there are the school bus monitors - the ones that will sit there in the middle of a BG and check the numbers to see who doesn't have that much damage racked up and ridicule them by name in BG chat (hmm.. couldn't possibly be that this is like, their 3rd time in BG's and they're still figuring it out or anything?) This happened to a guildie of mine, a grandmother. We convinced her to give BG's a try and she gets flamed by this nozzle who thinks everyone who sets foot in BG's is a freakin veteran. Needless to say she is disinclined to go back very often.
Of course there are the "stfu nubs", "lrn2ply"s, and various other pleasantries. My wife was in a BG the other day and got long lag spike. She got a whisper out of the blue from someone complaining she didn't heal them. She told them she was laggy. What was the reply?
"Then don't play battlegrounds".
My thoughts exactly.

My most memorable moments from the morons in the LFG channel. As I work a 2nd shift factory job, I got home and online after most of the kiddies went to bed. This left the LFG channel mostly clear of harsh words and unpleasentries. There was the occasional idiot, but for the most part it was just general chatting around... Except for the LFG police, that was always annoying.

I find that there is a direct correlation between how few chats I am involved in and my enjoyment of the game. The only channel any of my characters are in is Local Defense and General if I'm not in a city. The nicest chat is when I'm in a party with friends. You'd be surprised how smoothly BG's can go if you're not in the chats. I've left BG chat plenty of times and still won AV with no problem.
