What's your Burning Crusade launch-day plan?
Only 12 more sleeps until Launch Day, and it's bringing back memories of November, 2004 for me. Back then I was a naive young lad, blissfully playing away his days in the beta, thinking that hardly anyone knew about the game, and that it'd just be a matter of heading down to FutureShop (Canada's Best Buy before we also got Best Buy) to pick up a copy of the Collector's Edition.
Yes, yes, you may laugh now. I really had no clue. In fact, by the end of the day, I was just lucky to get my hands on a copy of the non-collector's release, and begin the installation. Fortunately, our guild had already chosen a server by the time I was finished installing, so it was just a matter of creating a character and then fighting the other thousand orcs for boar kills.
Cut to now, 2 years and 2 months later. Now I have a plan, even if it's not much better than what I had before. I've pre-ordered through EB Games and Amazon.ca, knowing that I'll hopefully get 1 on launch day, and another copy a few days later. Now I tried to pre-order the collector's edition, but my local EB didn't know if they were getting any, so I'm just on the list for the normal version. I've been on the list since September, and I've since lost my receipt, so I wonder if I'll just lose my $10 I put on the pre-order. No biggie, Amazon is there to back me up, and the extra copy will be a very late birthday present to my brother (Happy Birthday, Dave!).
So if all goes well, my day should go like this: Wake up, realize it's launch day and login to see how crashed everything is, go to work (yeah, the day job), head to EB Games at noon to see if there's a copy, bang head on counter for EB did not receive a large enough shipment, run to FutureShop and see if there's a copy left, find out they actually opened at 7am and I could've picked one up before work but now they're sold out, get back to the office just in time to hear my fellow WoW Insider bloggers cheer about picking up their copies of the game, cry a little on the inside, head home after work dejected and secretly hoping the servers are down due to Bliz's inability to be prepared for big launches even though they have bazillions of dollars in the bank and could just throw money at the problem, trudge into the house, trudge back out of the house realizing I'd forgotten to check the mail, see a package from Amazon, open the package, squeal in delight until the neighbor's dog barks, and then run inside to begin the 3-hour install and patch process.
Ahh.. good times. So, what do you think Tuesday, January 16th will be like for you?

Just wait for my pre-ordered Collector's Edition to arrive, hopefully that Friday (if not, Monday, which won't be fun. First day of classes...).

Well, my pre-ordered CE copy probably won't show up until Thursday, but I've already got a guild together for one of the new servers we assume Blizzard will launch that day. This means I will log into a new server and setup a couple name holding characters and then one to actually level up to 10 or so and get the money to buy the guild charter.

Apparently the EB I preordered from is having a special midnight opening for people who preordered to pick up there copy. As much as I want to stand in line for something I already paid for, I think I'll try and show up at 12:30am and just walk right in and get my copy.

I haven't personally verified this, but according to a friend, a good way to get around losing your receipt is go in and tell them that you want to put an additional $10 down on the game. They will look up the preorder, add the money and give you a new receipt.

Pre-Launch day plan:
I'm a mage so I'm going to go to the nearest Horde town to the portal and set my hearth stone. Then before I log out I'm going to find the most secluded portion of the world to log out in. This way when I log in I'm not hit with the huge lag spikes. I will ask my guild mates what is going on in certain zones and if they are locked up I will do some farming.
Launch Day Plan:
If I log in and can stay connected through the lag/crashes I will hearth to the nearest town and go through the portal on full speed in hopes I don't get ganked before I make it in. I may even have an invisibility potion ready just in case.
I haven't decided if I am going to take off work or not. Seeing as how the servers won't be up and running till 2pm my time. There may still be a bunch of difficulties with the patch and I may not get to play till later that night. If that was the case then I just wasted a day off work. I may take that Friday off. We will see.

Does anyone know if Blizzard makes Collector's Editions after the first batch are sold? I really want to get a CE but everywhere is sold out, and the prices on ebay are pretty hefty now ~$175. But I'd rather pay that price now than have the CE go to like 400+ or something on ebay after the release since if Blizzard doesn't make anymore and they'll be in higher demand.

I expect my day to go something like this:
Check email to see that my preorder from Amazon has still not shipped (estimated arrival: Jan 30th).
Drive to Best Buy to try and get a copy of the collector's edition. Fail.
Drive back to my apartment and continue packing for my move, resigning myself to the fate of not getting to play BC for another week or so.

Paul, I lost my receipt as well and worse yet...forgot where I had placed the reservation in the first place lol. Anyway, I put another $10 down on TBC and the strategy guide (should come in handy) @ EB Games (even had a real life GIRL who not only plays WoW but is a fellow Hordie took my order - plus she was a cutie). She told me that if I had placed it with EB Games I didn't need a receipt - but apparently I hadn't placed the original reservation with EB Games 'cause they had no idea who I was lol.
Anyway, I think I'm actually not coming into work the day TBC launches...It'll be like the day PS3 came out for me (except that I'm not into gaming consoles). I want to reach level 20 or 30 on my BE 'lock the first day ;)

Land at the airport at 5am, get home by 7-8. Change get back in the car and drive to the mall. Walk into Gamestop (damn them for buying up all the competition - no more EB, no more Software Etc, no more Funcoland - anyway) Go to the front of the line, get a sales assistant's attention. Show them my receipt for two copes fully paid, and walk out.
Go home and go to bed for a few hours.
joey Jan 4th 2007 12:33PM
step 1 : Go to best buy to pickup my preorder
step 2 : install
step 3 : try to log in.. get booted off b/c of all the crashes
step 4 : find something else to do until the servers are stable again
step 5 : talk about how awesome it is after i finally get to play it
Michael Jan 4th 2007 12:32PM
If blizzard is smart they will allow online downloads of it through fast servers. Let people start buying and downloading the weekend before but only have it become active on the day its available retail.
Online distribution for something like this is the best way to do it and I'm surprised they aren't offering it.
I'm gonna take my luck at best buy.

Jan 16 is a maintenance day (Tues) right? Will we even be able to play it before 6pm that day?
tim Jan 4th 2007 12:57PM
umm.. i think im going to sit this out a few days. go visit a museum. take someone out to dinner and let the dust settle down before i even try to log on.
Theadrick Jan 4th 2007 12:49PM
I know that at Gamestop they have your pre-order info saved so you don't need your original receipt. Anyway, going to head to Gamestop after work on the 16th and pick up my 2 copies. Go home, install them, watch the servers crash, get restarted, etc. Go to bed frustrated around 10 pm. Then hope that on the 17th things settle down (server/technical wise) a bit (optomistic I know). I took the 17th and 18th off to hopefully play all day both days.

My Pre-orderd CE is supposed to be deliverd Thursday as well, so on launch day I'll be doing what I have been doing lately. Grinding CC or AD rep with my lvl 60. Maybe I'll get XP for the kills then. Except, if her XP bar is purple, I'll play alts that have blue ones. At least server restarts won't be so annoying.
