Adventures in Beta: Fun with Spellsteal
.jpg)
Second in our series of easily abused Burning Crusade spells is the mage's Spellsteal. This spell, obtainable at level 70, steals a beneficial magic effect from the target. The magic effect lasts two minutes.
The fun thing about Spellsteal is that it's completely random. Sure, you can steal that warlock's Demon Armor - you can also end up with his Rank 1 Prayer of Fortitude, overwriting yours. Try for that shaman's Bloodlust and you might get Lightning Shield. It's like a giant roulette game with every buff in the world available!
A group of Beta mages have started a thread listing what spells they've stolen so far. Notable highlights include:
- A 50 percent increased casting speed buff from a Karazhan boss.
- An arcane power from another mage while combustion was up. Boom.
- A fire aura from mobs in Mechanaar that does a 1000 damage/tick AOE with plus damage gear. Our mage's tank was not amused at the effort it took to keep aggro off the mage.
- A plus 295 spell damage buff from the Menders in the Botanica.
- Slowfall, from another mage, immediately after chasing said mage off a cliff. Our mage floated down comfortably as he watched his opponent fall to his death. This is possibly the best thing ever done in World of Warcraft, and has made a mage friend of mine comment that he will always be defending the Lumber Mill in Arathi Basin at 70 just so he can do this.
What spells are you looking forward to stealing? Can you think of any evil uses for this spell?

OH please ... please tell me you can steal the pally bubble. That would also be great when they cliff jump in AB.

It's too bad that the mage robbed of his Slowfall didn't know about blink falling :)

I have seen a screenshot of a mage turned into a green core-hound like monster by stealing a transformation buff from mobs in Hellfire Citadel.

Is it just magic effects?
Or can I steal sprint from rogues?

@ no.2, paladin's bubble makes you immune to all physical and spell effects/damage, so therfore it cannot be stolen :) blessing of protection on the other hand only does physical damage, so it could probably be stolen

Taking renew from a priest would be sweet. Is it just buffs, or can you get unlucky and end up stealing a dot?

The spell defenition says "benefitial spell effect", so no, you won't steal a DoT.
I'm waiting to use this in group PvP when someone on the other side gets an innervate. Or it will give me a leg up when fighting a shadow priest and he bubbles.
Hmm, I wonder if it's possible to steal soul link :)

I havent been in the beta so i dont know, but the way it sounds spellsteal can be very OP,atleast purge and dispel just kill a buff, but these thing steals it with no cooldown.

Doubt it works with passive buffs like soul link or so. But that slowfall one was fun =)

we'll probably see many updates with bosses and mobs with immunity to this spell. =/
wonder how long it will take before people scream "overpowerd!" =)

Daemon Armor from Shadow Lab can be stolen off locks as well as the renew and the one that turns them into a dog. Shadowform cannot be stolen off of a shadow priest. Enrage cannot be stolen either.
