Adventures in Beta: The Discovery Channel
With only a week left until the Burning Crusade hits, your professions probably are not the top thing on your WoW agenda. Leveling, PVP, your guild status -- those are more pressing concerns than "Dear God, how am I going to level up my Engineering?" But if you're one of those rare people who absolutely delights in their professions, as I am, you might be interested in the new "discovery" system.
Discoveries are a new twist on the profession system. Basically, when making profession items, you can "discover" new recipes. The discoveries appear to be totally random, and so far have only been seen in Alchemy. It's not clear whether Alchemy is the only profession that gets these, or whether the rate of discoveries are so low that only alchemists making mass amounts of potions have been able to uncover them.
So far, adept alchemists have discovered two transmutes (Primal Life to Primal Earth and vice versa) and five flasks. The Flask of Mighty Restoration increases mana regeneration by 70/5 sec, the Flask of Fortification is an upgraded Flask of Titans, the Flasks of Arcane and Shadow Fortification increase resistance to Arcane/Shadow spells by 75 and health regeneration by 40/5 seconds, and the Flask of Relentless Assault increases attack power by 360. All the flasks last two hours and persist through death.
Do you think the discovery recipes are a neat addition, or does it make farming for flasks and transmutes too random?

I think it's pretty neat.....
...so long as there are no "discovery-only" recipes, and all of them are available by other means.

Being an alchemist, I want to know how you discovered those... they sound pretty sweet :) What did you make to discover those?

Kymala, I didn't make any of the discoveries myself. It looks like "discoveries" are random, and there's no potion you can reliably make to discover one flask over the other.

Sounds good. Those lucky few who make the discoveries will definitely have their goods high in demand.

Think about how this could be utilized.
They could have thousands of discovery recipes just sitting there.
Adding more with each server maintenance.
We could possibly never know how many are actually out there.
The economy would be crazy as someone discovers one useful potion, make their money, then another person makes something even better.
I think this could be one of the best things to happen to server economies.

Sounds a bit like what it took to become a jedi in SWG.

I just have to say that it's a GREAT idea... the professions in WoW require generally a good bit of time. Throwing in something to spice it up at random after a while can only help. It also adds some uniqueness to characters; it gets a bit tiresome knowing that all your alts have the _same_ recipes...

Anything that helps differentiates characters is a good thing.
So long as everyone has an equal chance to discover these recipes (granted, making more items increases one's chances) then discovery-only recipes are fine.

I support this idea for all professions.

From what i have seen in beta testing, they are BOP.
I have crafted at least 300 of the new BC potions and have yet to find a single new recipe. I did however, find one recipe during regular grinding. An arcane protection potion. 355 skill level and was BOP. I have checked the AH in beta almost every day, i havent seen a single higher level recipe for sale. Makes me wonder if they are all BOP...
Can be interesting!

Did you guys see the Alchemist Stone? I'm looking forward to getting ahold of that. A trinket with +15 to all stats and 40% more effective potions? I'm there.

I just got had the Discovery feature happen to me while making about 10 Onslaught elixir's (+60 attack power for 1 hour) and it gave me the recipe for Flask of Relentless Assault, +360 attack power over 2 hours, /drool.
