Dell makes custom BC laptop; '70s want their art back
Apparently there was more than one keynote today (who knew?). Michael Dell at CES this morning decided to strike while the BC iron is hot and come up with a very limited edition (read: 2 made) M1710 laptop with some custom airbrushed WoW art on it. I can't find a better picture than this one; it looks like your standard Blood Elf vs. Draenei shot.Kotaku writes that these are to be auctioned off on eBay, though Dell's own site appears to claim that only one of them ever existed, and it was given away at the keynote at CES. Being a Mac person, I didn't really want one anyway. And that art is giving me flashbacks to the Janitor's epic mural in the latest Scrubs episode: "usually you have to go to a van convention" indeed.
I'd link to Dell's page on this device, but it's buried in a horrendous Flash layout, and therefore seems to be unlinkable. If you really feel the need to subject yourself to it, click here and then click "M1710 Burning Crusade" when the Flash loads.

Update: Engadget confirms that the 2 laptops will be "auctioned off to benefit World Harvest."

yay go macs :D
Nevek Jan 10th 2007 12:12AM
Beige box is because you buy cheap boxes :p and the safer, faster and cheaper is a big lie.Safer depends on how you use the computer (porn ? :o) how much does it cost to you when a component in your mac breaks ? more than me I'm sure. :)
Keegan Jan 9th 2007 10:46PM
Cheaper? Lawls--That made me laugh.
Dave Jan 9th 2007 11:00PM
You're only safer because no one bothers to mess with you. It's sad when you can't even get negative attention...Oh...and my computer happens to be black with blue Cathodes lighting it up. Beige nothing.

My Apple iMac 20" Intel cost just as much as my HP or Dell, has about 6x faster processing, better graphics card, better OS, and flat out better design.
So, for what you get, yes, Macs are *much* cheaper.

I have yet to see a Mac laptop that is equally efficient in computer specifications compared to many other laptops at the same price. They are much, much, much more expensive.

What utter drivel. Same hardware, more expensive, less software support, rubbish customer service, pathetic warranty, less upgrade options, and you look like a yuppie.
Shadowbrand Jan 10th 2007 3:46AM
Oh and Ryan? No WAY on earth are they the same price mate
And 6x faster processing? Where on earth did you get that figure from, they use the same components as normal PC's. L2Benchmark before opening your mouth again.

haha, owned..

Err... The "70's art" is a F***ing Burning Crusade wallpaper
http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/burningcrusade/images/wallpapers/bloodelf_vs_draenei/bloodelf_vs_draenei-800x.jpg
Also, if you're into gaming other than WoW, then buying a mac would be the stupidest thing you could do.
Seltor Jan 10th 2007 7:29AM
Also, macs are for
a) Artists (tools for media are actually good),
b) Apple fanboys,
c) The Technologically Illeterate (Those who have no idea what's inside a computer, they just want one. Mac is simpler to use, you don't have to bother yourself with upgrades, etc.)
It's just silly to compare a Mac to HP or Dell. If you're smart then you'll build your own pc, with all the parts you KNOW you want/need.

@11 - Seltor, "Err... The "70's art" is a F***ing Burning Crusade wallpaper" I think the author was COMPARING the look to the old 70s art you used to see on vans in the 70s -- guess ya had to be alive back then. But that's just how I read it.
I don't care one way or the other about the Mac v. PC debate -- I have a desktop I built and a laptop I purchased. However, I will say: I know 3 webhosts, a family member who runs a non-profit housing website via multiple government grants, and a couple of gentlemen who are anti-hackers that the government calls in when they get screwed (very hush hush of course, we wouldn't want all you guys knowing the gvmt gets hacked and all) and all of those gentlemen use Macs. I don't know what that says, but they're not all imbeciles when it comes to computers. I prefer PCs, but that's because I know exactly what I want to do and how to do it with a PC -- hardware AND software. If I was stuck with Win98se still, I'd probably go with a Mac due to 98's instability. But XP is much more stable, so much so that I see no need to switch OS/hardware.

Just to feed the trolls... Over 15 years of experience in computers. I build *all* my systems. I used to lug around a Dell and recently purchased a MacBook Black. Oh boy, am I in heaven...

People that keep up the Apple vs. PC debate are lame. Who cares, use what you like, neither is better.

@ Dave: except that the "security through obscurity" myth has been debunked many times:
http://talkback.zdnet.com/5208-10533-0.html?forumID=1&threadID=18366&messageID=356982&start=268
you have to realize there are many reasons why BSD Unix (the underpinnings of OS X) is more secure than the Windoze OS
p.s. the last place i expected to see a thread get derailed into a platform war was on wow insider... ;)
