My Burning Crusade launch experience
If you're tired of reading about midnight launches and what people would do to get a Collector's Edition, then move along. If instead you want to read about the trials and tribulations of a man who's closer to the arctic circle than is necessary, stay with me.
So, being in Saskatoon, we didn't get a midnight launch. Maybe it's because both of our EB Games locations are in malls and our Walmarts close at 10pm like everything else in the city, and that's it really is too dark and too cold for people to be out that late on a Monday night. Whatever the reason, a midnight launch was a no-go. I watched my guildies leap through the Dark Portal with the giddy giggles of four-year olds at Christmas. I kept saying "Grats" to every ding from a newly created Draenei. And then I went to bed, falling asleep in a puddle of tears.
No, not really. Earlier on Monday evening, five of us had piled into my car to hit every shop in town to see a) If they had any Collector's Editions in stock and b) If they could be bribed to sell them to us a little early. While a fun experience, it proved unfruitful. It seemed like hope was dwindling for me and my dashed dreams of a Collector's Edition.
Only hours before, I'd received the dreaded call saying that my CE had been gobbled up by an unruly manager at the shop where a friend had a friend of his stealthily hide it away from prying eyes. All prying eyes, that is, except for the manager.
And so it was that I found myself, sleepy and bleary eyed, standing at 6 in the morning in a line of 50 or more fellow WoW Enthusiasts, waiting to pick up my pre-ordered and pre-paid copy of The Burning Crusade at EB Games. The line moved slowly, but free posters were being given away - one of the blood elves, and one of the mighty and glorious squidfaced bearers of the light known as the Draenei (which I just happen to be rolling). So I made it home in time to pick up my ever-understanding roomie and drive him to work, before I drove off again in search of a Collector's Edition to call my own.
So I head to Walmart, near my office (yes, I have a day job), where I meet some more folks discussing the demerits of blood elves, who inform me that they'd talked on the phone to Walmart, and were assured that there were more Collector's Editions than normal editions. We're let in a little early only to find that "collector's edition" really means the green Burning Crusade box, rather than the brown World of Warcraft box. Yes, the regular editions. Pained, I leave the shop empty-handed, and decide to make a last-ditch effort at getting a copy from FutureShop, also opening early, but which had a fairly large line at my earlier drive-by inspection.
So I run into the shop, surely looking like a mad man in a jaunty cap, only to see that there are no more gloriously large green Collector's Edition boxes. I get in line, see a lady two spots in front of me, and ask hopefully, "Are there a pile of those somewhere?" She smiles back at me, a little sadly, and shakes her head.
"Here, you should have this one. My husband just needs the normal edition," the voice of this angelic woman cuts through the din.
"Are..are...are..you sure?" I stammer out.
"Yes, you look like you really want it. You should have it."
I take the large, heavy package from her, thank her profusely, and wait my turn in line. While doing so, a FutureShop staff member comes by and says "Hey, you don't have your free cards yet!" and dumps some free plastic case of a trading card game starter set "With 3 epic characters!" into my stunned paws.
So there it is. I was a couple of minutes late for work (sorry!), but I have a CE, a poster, and some epic character cards. It was a fun adventure, and a great way to kill those final hours leading up to the expansion going live.
To the husband of the wife who gave me her Collector's Edition, I can only say thanks, and that I'll gladly buy you a drink of choice down at the pub. Your wife is a kind and giving soul, who has robbed you of an in-game pet and a mousepad.

If someone gave my CE away I'd cut him.

Wow great story.....I am glad you got one.
My story is that I drove to Bestbuy 5 minutes before opening....sat in my car while ppl were standing in line to get in and just walked in as the doors opened. I had preordered online at 1:00AM because I had missed all midnight releases. I walk in and I see a pile of Collector's Edition boxes....surely they are for ppl that waited in line......nope....I just picked up a box and walked over to the cash register. No angels....but no bonus cards either. I will probably sell it in a month or a year since I also bought a regular copy for myself.

to kahja:
You must learn to give away, a happy smiling worth a lot more than any money in the world
what would you do if someone give you the game of someone else?
let me guess you wouldn't accept because it belongs to someone else?
ofc you would accept
now the big question would you 'cut' him anyway knowing that tomorow you can be the one who get it?

For me, finally, it arrived after a whole day waiting and waiting to come at my door...Ive been to school and asked a friend to stay at my place, didnt wanted the Postman to find nobody at my place. I live in Romania, and here all the copies of BC were sold in the first day, and only to the preorders. So if I wouldnt grab mine today, the second one would be in february or march... It was a painfull waiting day... I waited till 19.00...All my hopes diminished...untill I got a phone from the postman and asked me if I am so kind and meet him in front of Flanco Store (I live in Bucharest). So I went there, and finally got my copy. Installing it right now. Cheers to all, cya in Outland and beyond.
Anyway, great story that from Saskatoon. Grats on your CE mate... Here was way to expensive to purchase (around 110 Euro, dont know why..)

Well EB Games sold my copy of BC and all they had to say was "Sorry should have been here at midnight". They offered me a refund or wait till they get more in. Lets say if I had a gun I would have shot everyone behind that counter. May I see them in a BG and get the chance to gank'm!

Had a similar experience this morning... I just started playing WoW in November so I missed the CE preorders by a long shot. I called in sick this morning *cough* and thought I would drop by my local EBGames and GameStop when they opened (neither had a midnight sale) to see if there might be even the remotest possibility that they had any extra/unclaimed CE's for sale. Nada.
On my way back I saw Circuit City and remembered that I had seen the CE on their website (no availability however), so on a lark I dropped by. I asked one of the computer guys who checked the website and then the inventory system. Without saying anything he went in the back and walked out with a shiny CE box!!! I asked if they had any more and he said "only one." I decided to loot it while I could and took my two epic drops to the register.
The woman at the register asked if this was the new game that just came out. She said that someone had just come in looking for it and left a phone number. I asked if the individual was looking for the CE and she said yes. I was feeling incredibly lucky myself, so I decided to make someone else happy today...

Can someone finally tell me if you get a month of play time with BC? As a college student who heads back to school next weekend, I really can't afford to drop $40 on a game and pay another $15 just to play it for a few days.
(Yes, my account expires today. In 4 hours.)

No free month unfourtenetly, none that I have heard or seen from Blizz. :o(

I'm surprised you guys didn't get a midnight launch up in Saskatoon, all the EB Games here in Regina had them...

I went to my local Target this morning an hour and a half after it opened, expecting to find people buying the standard version of the expansion. Upon my surprise, there was nobody there as I made a bee-line towards them to see something large right next to the neatly stacked BC standard boxes - the CE sitting there all by itself!
I felt quite bad for it, not having any other CE to talk to so I immediately grabbed it to give it some company while I walked around the store for about another 45 minutes before purchasing it and bringing it home.

I just got home with 2 CE of TBC...who wants to start the bidding for the second copy?
Brendan Jan 16th 2007 3:54PM
Preordered my CE from stupid GameStop. An automated message called me and told me to show up at 11am for exchange of the preorder receipt for the actual receipt, and then we all queued again to wait until 12 when they handed them all out. Painless. My buddy and I just chatted while we waited. Out of the 200 or so people there, we only saw one other guy walk out with a CE. I don't know why no one else got one.

I went on lark to look for a copy of the CE and went to Best Buy and Target and had no luck. Decided to go to Walmart and got the last CE in the store. Happyness!

Best Buy in Chelsea NYC still has copies! OMG!

I was busy watching 24 on my DVR (i had missed the live airing due to driving home from a grandparents house)and I realized exactly what time it was... I hit up my friend who is always game for last minute adventures and booked it out to our local Gamestop. However, they didn't have any non-preordered CE's available. Dejected we headed to his house and decided to play some Wii do soothe the pain. On a whim we checked what time our local Target opened (8am) and vowed to get there a half an hour early.
So we played Wii Sports and Zelda all night long staying up on energy drinks and loud blaring music until it was time to head over. When we got to the Target, suprisingly NO ONE WAS THERE. We didnt even get out of my car to form a line because there was no point in making a line. So at 8am we walked into the store, booked it towards the electronics department to find 8 CE boxes and 18 regular boxes on the shelves. We each snagged a copy (both are bound for eBay since I have another one coming in the mail that i will actually keep...) and walked out triumphant with our loot.

I installed it this afternoon, then went to bed (I came out of a 10 hour shift when I received it). I just woke up, started it, installed updates, installed some more updates, restarted it. Logged in, clicked "Enter World" and waited.. and waited.. until I finally got a Disconnected from Server message, retried it and got the same thing. So much for playing. :P
