New servers and transfers
Well, I was right. Blizz opened new servers very soon after the expansion's launch. We've got two new non-transfer servers and six transfer ones. From Tseric, here are the new non-transfer servers (AQ gates closed -- but who's going to go to AQ now?):- Blood Furnace - Central - PVP - Frenzy Battlegroup
- Shattered Halls - Pacific - PVP - Frenzy Battlegroup
- Destination: - The Scryers, RP - Pacific
Feathermoon
Silver Hand
Scarlet Crusade
Argent Dawn
Shadow Council
- Destination: - Area 52 PvE, - Eastern
Icecrown
Stormrage
Gilneas
Bloodhoof
Lothar
- Destination: - Blade's Edge, PvE - Pacific
Draenor
Dragonblight
Shadowsong
Uldum
Cenarius
- Destination: - Zangarmarsh, PvE - Mountain
Perenolde
Whisperwind
Azjol-Nerub
Thunderhorn
Terenas
- Destination: - Azuremyst, - PvE Pacific
Proudmoore
Kilrogg
Lightbringer
Uther
Hyjal
- Destination: - The Underbog, - PvP Central
Sargeras
Illidan
Auchindoun
Skullcrusher
Mal'Ganis
All these transfers are scheduled to go until 3:00 PM PST on January 23rd, but may close early if the realms get enough people. The little "breaking news" box in WoW now warns "if the populations of these realms are not reduced by free character moves, we will be forced to perform realm splits to reduce the population to acceptable levels." Yikes! Move, people, move! Nobody wants realm splits.

Meh, I'd rather have a realm split. I'm part of a raiding alliance consisting of 3 guilds and all 3 have people that for multiple real life issues aren't playing till they get BC. Which means if we swap servers, they are left in the dust.
A split thought would mean, ideally, they would move with us.

hmm, what to do about my old shaman on Mal'Ganis... I guess I better prep him for a move just in case. I haven't played him in forever, but I'd rather not have to worry about the what-if scenario.

Why have they still not allowed Alleria to transfer to a new realm. Every night there is at least a 500 queue line to get in.

I heard about the move yesterday morning and promptly moved my Horde characters over to Azuremyst. The place was a ghost town. Nice for doing quests though in some of the new areas.
I think the census I run in the background said at max it was around 55 Horde online at the time. I'm guessing that number will be higher tonight. But it was enough to bump my BE up a few levels running quests and not having to fight for mobs with everyone else.
Still have yet to transfer my Alliance characters... am waiting to hear from my brother whom I group with frequently before making the decision to move or not. If I move then the queues should be non-existent for quite a while. If I don't move then if there is a split we would be separated anyway since we're not in the same guild.

I thought it was interesting that they're literally threatening a realm split at this point. I'm on Thunderhorn, and we were laughing last night at how nice it would be if they did split us-- only they split us into a Horde server and an Alliance server.
Sure, there'd be no Allys to kill, but a Horde-only server would be fun.

I had a theory on this, why don't they just add something to keep the 'waiting' players busy, such as a battleground.
The battlegrounds are on a seperate server, so why not queue the last logged on character into a battleground so the person can do something while they wait to get into their server.
They could also, as a friend suggested, have a server-wide chat area where horde & alliance could communicate. This would allow for some interesting conversation before entering your server, and it would help pass the time.
I think a server split would open up a whole can of worms. I play on my server with 10 irl friends and we're all in separate guilds, I would hate for us to get separated because of some technicallity.

wooooo....Skullcrusher's second free transfer in two weeks and our sixth free transfer overall. We've lost many of the top horde and alliance guilds to transfers already - it's good to see they want to make sure we lose what we have left. The interesting thing is that a lot of these people just come right on back with the paid transfers. Skullcrusher's community is just that good.
Our realm is now doomed because they didn't close us to transfers and new account creation. The first transfers were due to bad hardware and being 100% unable to raid without crashing the servers. Ally and horde had to schedule BWL raids over irc....2am raid time ftl. Now we have 1-2 hour queues every night and 15 second instacasts in crowded zones due to the overpopulation problem. It's a superpopular server to move to and we just keep having the big ol' hammer of doom hanging over our heads. It's sad to see such a fabulous day 1 server go down the tubes like this. I think a few other realms (many in our battlegroup because we seem to have been clustered with other day 1 servers) are in the same situation. It sucks. hard.
Blizzard really effed up, imho. General consensus is that a realm split is inc sooner rather than later http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/thread.html?topicId=62050137&sid=1&pageNo=1
