Vacaloco's complete jewel guide
One of the new puzzles I've had in the Outlands is figuring out just how good that socketed item is. For instance, Chemise of Rebirth without any gems in it is obviously worse than Goldweave Tunic. But what gems are available, and how much might they bump up the Chemise? Enter Vacaloco's complete jewel guide. It purports to be a list of every gem currently in the game, showing in easy-to-read format their color and what stats they give, as well as whether they're crafted, bought, dropped, or PvP rewards. I've had this list open in a browser window constantly for the past few days.Personally, what I'd like to see is an AddOn or web tool that would do the thinking for me. I want to be able to mouse over an item, or input the number and color of sockets on a web page somewhere, and get back the maximum stat boost, for my chosen type of stats, that I could get out of the item with gems socketed. That would make a lot of comparisons much easier. Unfortunately, I don't know any Lua, nor am I very familiar with WoW's API, so writing that AddOn is probably beyond me.
In any case, Vacaloco's page is a great resource. Have you found any ridiculously useful references for this brave new world?

It's a good list to know what cuts are out there, but I'm still in search of a really good reference guide for gem cutting. Vacaloco's list doesn't, for example, doesn't show the rep faction level you'll need to buy many of the vendor designs at.
I also like the list at http://wow.crafterstome.com/recipes/jewelcrafting.html but it's still hard to use.
I agree that an add-on would be ideal, preferably one that would allow you to sort in various ways.
I typically get these types of whispers:
"What can you do with [linked gem]?"
"What do you have for a red or yellow socket?"
"I'm looking for something with crit and agi, what can you make?"
"What are the cuts that you know?"
"What would you recommend for a [talent tree] [class]?"
I'm getting by with some macros that /reply back to the inquirer (which doesn't work well when a lot of different people are whispering me at the same time) as well as a custom spreadsheet that sorts the different cuts I know by socket color.

I usually tend to stick with power leveling guides. So I've been following http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/thread.html?topicId=35793822&sid=1 for the power leveling (the Google Spreadsheet is much more comprehensive), and WoWHead's Jewelcrafting Recipes listing http://www.wowhead.com/?spells=11.755. Allakhazam has also done a pretty decent job with this gem list which is at http://wow.allakhazam.com/db/gem.html. I'm sure there's always great information, but for me it's how it's organized and how quickly I can access/digest it to get back to the grind.

One might find http://www.wowwiki.com/Jewel better laid out. No it doesn't list the sources, but they work out fairly simply. Whites can be vendor bought in Outland, Greens are generally crafted, Blues and purples tend to come from PvP, reputation rewards, and crafters.

A nice little surprise for me, was realizing that it's Enchanters that can craft the +3 and +4 to all Resistance jems. Imagine the resistances you could have, if you put one in every socket you had...though chances are you'll want other stuff too - still, that's a lot of resistance!

What kind of addon would be useful? Something that lets you "try out" an item with gems?
What about something that lets you shift-right click (or something) on a socketed item, and see a list of all gems you could put into it. You can click each gem to toggle them on/off and see what effect they have, and then shift-click on the gem to see where to get it.

An add on would be fantastico!
