Phat Loot Phriday: Prairie Dog Whistle

Since PLP has been very Outland-focused lately, I promised we'd do something that came from the old Azeroth this week, and considering the holiday, I thought this was apropos.
Name: Prairie Dog Whistle (summons Prairie Dog)
Type: Noncombat Pet
Damage / Speed: N/A
Abilities:
- Can somehow accurately predict the weather every spring. Ok, no it can't-- this Prairie Dog just doesn't have the stuff that Punxsutawney Phil has-- he predicted an early spring this year.
- But he does look cute and is a pretty easy noncombat pet to come by.
- Bonus Trivia Fact: Did you know that groundhogs can whistle when alarmed? So when you use this whistle, it's not so much that you summon a prairie dog as you call him out of the ground, ready to either see or not see his shadow.
Alliance can get these too, but it's going to take a little more time and money-- you'll have to create a Tauren alt, run him to TB, buy the prairie dog, and then sell it through the Neutral AH (probably your best bet is to do a ghostrun to Tanaris).
Getting Rid of It: Sells for 12s 50c to vendors, and will bind after you use it to summon the little guy for the first time. Happy Groundhog Day!
Update: qsh points out that the Ratchet to Booty Bay trip would be much easier than ghostriding the whip (if you know what I mean) down to Tanaris. Good call.

Erm, a lowbie Horde can easily make it to Ratchet. From there it's a quick boat ride to Booty Bay.
You might want to note that this method requires two accounts, because you cannot buy your own auctions... eBay frowns on that action (I can't remember what they call it though).

Only downside is they make a really annoying sqeaking noise when they run with you.
Kang Feb 2nd 2007 11:33PM
@2: They do? I've had one for ages and it never makes any noise...

I don't mean to be a dork about it. But, groundhogs and prarie dogs are not one and the same. Different species with different habitats.

And don't forget prairie dogs can't predict the weather! Pretty nice pet, but i prefer my Gurky! :)

If I were you, I would have written "I thought this was à propos" instead of "apropos". I cute to try to use french, but its even better without mistakes ;-)

Wow, I tried to teach French and I forgot my English. That's fun !

Honest to god, I must be retarded, because I can't find the vendor...

@#6: Incidently, "apropos" is an English word; the fact it has a French derivative doesn't make it any less of a valid word.
Although I think you guys may have just put me on what to get my daughter as a gift next, even if we are Alliance characters. Thanks.

@#9&10 : I really think the English word is a derivative of the French word, since the French word literally means "to the purpose", on the contrary, the English word literally means, well, nothing. (see http://www.m-w.com/dictionary/apropos )
And usually when you write a word in italic, it's to warn the reader that you're using a foreign word.
So it would have been correct if it hadn't been written in italic, but for the present case, it's a French mistake.
The pet is cool, by the way :-)

get BC and do draenei. there is new blue moth pet (non-combat) that randomly drops as egg from the blue flutterers

I've seen the prairie dog whistle for sale in AH, but I'd like a pet that can dish out damage! Is there any such thing for a lowly Mage? I did have a charm that summoned a fellstalker, but it only lasted half an hour and had just the one charge. I'd like something like that, but that had an unlimited 'charge'.

"They come in any color you want, as long as it's brown."
Nice Henry Ford allusion there.

How did I get it for my Alliance main char:
- 1st of all, you can't do this alone if your char is from the Alliance, even with a Horde alt. You need a friend to help you, or access to a second account.
I made a horde alt (tauren is best) and completed the boring quests until level 5. After that I ran from the tauren starting zone to Ratchet. It isn't hard if you follow the road and avoid mobs. Level 5 is OK, I haven't seen the graveyard at all, I did all this without any deaths.
I went to Thunder Bluff to get the flight path. After that I ran into the Barrens and got the flight paths there (to get back safely). I ran to Ratchet, got the flight path, and took a boat to Booty Bay.
There I put a cheap item in the neutral Auction House (I had a shiny apple) for 2 gold, and asked a guild mate (from the Alliance) to buy it. After I got the gold with the tauren, I took the boat back to Ratchet, and flied to Thunder Bluff. I bought 2 dogs, and left some change for my Horde "pet supplier". Then I returned with my tauren to Booty Bay, put the pets in the AH for 1 silver, asked my guild mate to buy them on the spot, and paid him for his help :)
I think I'll give a snowshoe rabbit to my tauren :)
