Personally as a mage I rather use an one hander. You get a good one off Cavern of Time with 121 spell dmg and 8 hit. Couple that with a 21 spell dmg \ 21 crit off Mechanar you have a much better combo.

And to upgrade, you can get Blades of the Archmage from Honor Hold (exalted).
