Suggestions on implementing faction-neutral battlegrounds
Now that players are starting to grind up some real rep in Outland, we're definitely seeing more and more Aldor vs. Scryer sentiments-- Death to Scryers, by the way, because I'm Aldor to the Core(TM). And at least a few players have already suggested that the Aldor/Scryer rivalry might eventually lead to something new in PvP: an Aldor vs. Scryer battleground that finally mixes up the factions on either side, and lets Alliance play alongside Horde and vice versa.Paladinsucks, in fact, says why wait? Aldor and Scryer battlegrounds would be cool, but there's a lot of benefit in making the old battlegrounds "faction-neutral" as well. All you'd have to do, PS postulates, is employ the Old Hillsbrad trick of costuming (when you enter Old Hillsbrad in the Caverns of Time, your character temporarily becomes Human), and boom, you've got a whole new world of PvP. If you were Horde, you'd sometimes be defending Warsong, and sometimes Silverwing. In AB, some Alliance players, playing as Horde, would guard the Farm. Strategies would be more complex, and, in perhaps the most intriguing benefit, queue times would cut in half.
There are drawbacks, though, too-- the fun of playing Horde is hating the Alliance, and vice versa, and if you had the enemy on your side, things just wouldn't be the same. PS doesn't offer any suggestions as to how you decide who plays what side, too-- is it random, or do people get to choose their "faction"? (Because if they chose, who would choose to play as Alliance in AV?) I would love to see some faction-neutral PvP in the game (besides the Arenas, which are every man for himself), but getting a new Aldor/Scryer battleground, in which I can play for my faction on my own character, seems a much better solution than completely revamping the old ones.

why must there always be teams at all?
I long for a good old fashioned deathmatch with WoW mechanics. You can still have horde and alliance in the BG...just make is so everyone is attackable by everyone else.
I have no clue why this hasn't been done yet.

I always thought a neutral "Ninjas vs. Pirates" battleground would be great fun, especially for the lower levels to avoid WSG twinking. Similar game mechanics to the battle tonks at Darkmoon faire. It would randomly assign you to a side & costume you. Just 2 attacks like the tonks so no external gear: Blunderbuss/Bow for ranged & Cutlass/Sword for melee.

It has, Gurubashi Arena for example.

The Scryer's would get ROFLstomped in that battleground, easily.

Garubashi doesn't count. By the time you die and run back to your corpse, it's usually always over.
I really want an "unreal tournament" sort of WoW match.

This is a good idea, it would like the article said kill the competitive edge of battlegrounds, but if it was randomized you wouldnt know anyhow.
Good read, thanks for the post.

I haven't made it out to outlands yet. I didn't have a 60 when BC came out so I rolled a be lock and got him to 36 last night. But I think Alder vs Scryer bg is a great idea. I also think a free-for-all bg is another good idea. But don't make the other bg faction neutral. I have a hunger that only souls of allies can help.....

A cross-faction BG would be interesting but the lore doesn't really have them at odds. The Aldor are religious fanatics and the Scryer are just power hungry. Theres no genocide or plague that caused the rift. They just have different views of the Sha'tar. Whom in the end would be more than capable of wiping out both factions.

Horde/Alliance teams make no sense, there is no way to communicate.
What makes more sense is a battleground pitting teams of Alliance vs. Alliance and Horde vs. Horde.
multikast Feb 20th 2007 4:47PM
I seriously don't think this would ever happen, based on the fact that you could then communicate across factions.

only if i were allowed to kill the allaince members of my "team"!
Horde first, Scryers second - die allaince pond scum!!

"Because if they chose, who would choose to play as Alliance in AV?"
Your battlegroup must be a polar opposite of mine...
jdmdrew Feb 20th 2007 6:01PM
I would never want allaince filth by my side in BG, and I dont think that Blizzard would evern impliment it. First of all how would they back that up in the storyline?
Janae Feb 20th 2007 6:43PM
aldor vs scryer doesn't make much sense to me because people choose which side to align with based on their class. the wowwiki page more or less "if you're a (for example) dagger rogue, pick faction x. if you're a (for example) shadow priest, pick faction y." therefore an aldor vs scryer battleground will be initially interesting because of the cross-faction possibilities, but will eventually become dull as whichever faction caters more to PvP inevitably wins.
(note i'm only level 54 so i shouldn't really have an opinion on this :D)

That Scryer vs. Aldor would simply not work.
Most Healers choose Aldor, and most DPS-Casters choose Scryer.
So there would be quite an inbalance on the Matchmaking side. How can you defeat 10 healers with only pure DPS?

oh my god as a hunter PVPer i'd LOVE to defend alliance AV for a couple times. It'd be great to defend the 'bridge of death' instead of watching your team wipe there over and over. After all, the horde base DOES get boring after awhile. Each base has their own intricate differences - i think it'd be real interesting to be able to switch without rerolling an alliance toon and leveling to 60ish.

i dont think there should be an aldor vs scryer bg but a more generalized one where one could respawn in a matter of maybe 10 seconds or 15 seconds with a certain number of lives.. but none of this alliance and horde fraterniztion i have enough trouble getting around w/o being ganked by 3 lvl 68's...
Ekrim Feb 20th 2007 10:27PM
I'd much rather be allowed to change sides, through some form of faction-grinding. Lord knows, having members of a race on the opposite alliance has long since been supported by the lore...
Cetha Feb 21st 2007 8:27AM
i'm with #12...in my battlegroup the horde, for reasons that i have never been able to understand, consistently win wsg and ab, but can't win av at all..very frustrating
Flit Feb 21st 2007 9:38AM
Yeah, The 10 alliance guys holding the bridge in AV have an amazing ability to hold off any horde group you throw at them (thanks to the many mobs and the two towers that stop you from pushing forward slowly). Man i hate AV. If people could choose, who wouldn't take the bridge pinch point and closer graveyard to the keep? Alliance is EZMODE!
