Around Azeroth: Irontree Woods

Reader Tony sends in this shot of the three ancients in the Irontree Woods in Felwood. I've always wondered about this particular scene, with three huge Ancients frozen in place around a pool. And, as usual, WoWWiki provides enlightenment, though not quite enough to sate my curiosity, offering only that these Darnassian Ancients have been petrified (presumably by the Burning Legion) and remain entombed in these woods.

Those three ancients figure heavily in the Hunter epic bow quest that no one will ever do again now that Burning Crusade has totally killed Molten Core runs.

I remember these ancients as a hunter. Getting my quiver, bow and staff from them was a delight. I'm glad as a hunter and priest I actually able to enjoy the epic quests at 60 for them before blizz made them useless to get other than the quiver, which you can get one that is blue that is the same thing at 64/65ish from the Kurenai rep in Nagrand.

I think what blizzard needs to do with these old class specific epic quests is change them, and scale the reward up to a lvl 70 epic, and do away with the lvl 60 quest all together. This obviously won't work for all classes. Warlock epic quests are for Ritual of Doom and their Dreadsteed. Unless they wanted to add a warlock flying mount to the game, there would be no reason to change the current Dreadsteed quest.

methinks this is a send-up to the 3 trolls in the hobbit/lotr, no?

Yes these scene may be a little hommage to Tolkien's "The Hobbit" and the encounter with the three trolls.
