Breakfast topic: How good are you, really?
Reading the WoW Forums, it seems like every player of WoW is one of the best players the world has ever seen. If you're failing at a raid instance, then Blizzard needs to nerf it -- if you're losing to other players, then Blizzard hates your class. Can't get into a good guild? Clearly, it's the fault of the elitist guilds on your server. Your arena team get rolled? Mad hacks!
But the truth is that not all of us are great players. We have our own faults and weaknesses that keep most of us from being in Death and Taxes and Nihilum. So today, it's time to take a good, honest look at yourself and rate yourself as a player.
I like to consider myself as fairly good at PVE. I usually don't wipe groups, I go into fights knowing strategies, and I was generally in the top 5 DPS back in 40-man instances. However, aside from having a class schedule that stops me from being a consistent raider, I have difficulty paying attention to one thing at a time. Sometimes I'll be trying to write a post/read message boards/take screenshots/talk to friends in instances, which hurts my DPS and makes me look flaky. I'm also kind of slow at adjusting to raid environments that change at random times (non-timed AOEs, whirlwinds, etc.), and it took me a while to truly learn the power of some of my abilities like Kick and Slice and Dice. All in all, I would give myself a 7/10 as a PVE player, 8/10 if I ever learn to get out of the freaking whirlwinds in time. I will fully admit that I am terrible at PVP and probably rate somewhere just above that 70 hunter that lost to the 34 warlock.
What flaws have you noticed in your own gameplay? How have you tried to fix them? On a scale from 1-10, how would you rate yourself in PVE and PVP?

I don't rate myself, other people do. I consider myself a very valuable PvP, when I get (as a warrior) some support in battlegrounds I end up as top damage done, top kills and no deaths. If I'm not playing in organised group, I'm looking at the map a lot, looking for where I can be most usefull at the time and trying to predict where is the enemy going to attack or where is his defense the weakest (mostly on ab). Will see how the arena works out, as I'm still leveling (and people who I plan to play with on 5v5 are leveling as well), will be there soon. I believe PvP is all about details and knowing everything about your class, and as much as possible of your enemies to counter whatever they can throw at you. Being able to connect facts on fly and fast reaction time is critical, organization is essential, and giving your team mates the feel that they can relay on you, as well as you can relay on them, is the key to success in group PvP.

I feel pretty good about myself in PVE today. My priest main-healed through Arcatraz for the first time with surprisingly few wipes and no respawns! So I'll go with 8/10.
In PvP I'm pretty sad. 4/10 at best. My reaction times just aren't good enough, and I can never predict what the other toon's gonna do, let alone keep track of the zillions of abilities other classes have. Surprisingly, I really enjoy the BG's, and I'm happy to go hang out there, heal allies, stay alive and try to kill a few hordies.

I think I'm pretty good overall, as a holy priest (70) but I know my failings:
1. Sometimes I'll heal the wrong person purely because I feel responsible for keeping them all up - but I know the reality is that sometimes you do have to choose who dies.
2. I'm short tempered and don't suffer groups who make mistakes, petty or otherwise. I need to be more accepting in this.

I want to sincerely thank Blizzard for putting out the Armory. Boy have I seen a lot of n00bs claiming to be so great and mighty, get broken down and put to shame.
I'm a complete n00b myself (I joined a little bit before BC), but I have the chance to group with friends who have been playing since the open beta. And man... They sure know how to rip through a build by looking at it on the Armory.
The Armory is the Great Equalizer of Egos!

As my 68 Holy Priest I would give myself an 7/10 in five mans. Raiding I would say a 6/10, though I havent done any of the new raids, and have only dabbled in the old ones.
For soloing I would give myself a 4/10. I do much better with a friend. (Alhough I managed to solo last night for four hours in Nagrand without death and get almost half a level of XP.)
For pvp... I would say a 3 at max.
Not good at all. The fast pace freaks me out.

I had a rogue first and i have to admit... i was like a
3/10 in PVP
4/10 in PVE
but i switched over to a druid and i have to say, sometimes just switching classes can make alot of difference
now id give myself
6/10 PVP (im just not very good at pvp)
and
8/10 PVE
*and the armory has definetly helped shut people up when it comes to braggers

Being a officer in a raid guild, and a class leader I try to be the best I can be. Reading up on bosses and trash and how best to handle it all. I show up on time to all my raids, I bring all the regents that is required and speck to maximize raid potential.
As such, I would rate myself around 7 or 8 out of 10 in PvE.
In PvP however, i am total loser. I can rake up kill in mass pvp, but in 1v1 I almost always lose, even to people lower level then me.

Lvl 64 Hunter:
Solo PVE: 8/10
5-Man Instance: 6/10 - this doesnt apply this first time I run an instance. Im usually to worried about pulling a mob I shouldnt.
PvP: 3/10 - Unless Im playing defense at one the nodes, I die way too much.

My main is a 42 warlock. He's the first character I've had at this level so I consider myself a nub, but a competent one. I only have to aks questions once, but that's only if I can't figure something out myself. I would say solo PVE i give myself a 6/10, group PVE 7/10 and PVP about 4/10. I figure I'll get better as I progress through the game. My ultimate goal is to be known (and feared by allies) throughout my server.
Drakar24 Mar 6th 2007 9:21AM
My main is a 70 Nelf rogue. And currently I would say I'm about a 7.5 to 8/10. But when I first turned 60 I was a 4. MAybe 3 actually. I have a lot of undead rogues and warlocks to thank for showing me how bad I was, and what the class was really capable of.
I decided to farm out honor when I turned 60 since I wasn't into raiding at the time and wanted some good gear. And I really liked the black war tiger too. Well, pvp BG's hit me like a ton of bricks. I got owned... royally. But at some point you have to say, "Is it me?" I went to the forums, looked for advice, specs, weapons and what not. I learned the value of kick in a big hurry, and blind, and to hate warlocks.
My guild is now working towards Karazhan and getting everyone attuned. I lead DPS most of the time. I pay attention and use everything that I have for us to win. That acolyte broke sap earlier? A quick blind on him while we burn down the deathsworn. A shadow priest going after my mage? Kick-Mutilate-KS so he can't cast anything.
In any case, thanks to all the hordies who kicked my butt in my early pvp and made me a better player. Just remember though, paybacks a b!tch... :)

7/10 pvp
4/10 pve
While, as a pally I usually spend BGs getting gang-banged, I know how to fight, when to heal, and where to go if some part of the map is being dominated. Add l33t solo skills versus any phys-damage class and I'd say I'm a cut above average (but mostly because of my build).
PvE-wise, I've rarely if ever memorized a dungeon layout and I often think of what rarely-used ability would have saved my group a wipe AFTER everyone's dead.
Also, I don't blame anyone for my losses, I'll even admit paladin damage is a tiny bit OP right now.

It's weird, I've only been playing for 2 months now..my hunter is up to 49. I feel like a newb, going through instances for the first time, but I get frequent pst's asking for me to come along. I think it's because I'm rather good at aggro management 5-man groups, using my tank pet (I'm using the boss boar from Redridge) I do make mistakes on hitting multi-shot when we have a sapped or sheeped mob, but not that often.
I'd say PvE 6 or 7 out of 10. Please note, that this scale is graded on the curve in my mind.
PvP 5 out of 10. I die quickly, I think it's a matter of armor than anything else.

I consider myself to be a very good instance runner / healer. I pride myself in it and I will make other people know that I am the leader (Even when I dont have group leader). I do my research and sometimes I dont always make the right call but more often then not I am right.
I'm a resto druid and ever since VC, my warrior buddy and I have tag teamed every dungeon.
Unlike others i'm not shy about making it known that you are infact a bad player. Most of the time they argue against me and then leave the group. (for instance the warrior that wont tank and says the full resto druid should tank...)
I'm not elitest.. i just expect that you should know your class and not do stupid things. (i am an amazing healer though ;)
Flit Mar 6th 2007 9:41AM
Lvl 70 hunter:
5 mans: 8/10. I have been known to accidentally draw a mob towards my frost trap using serpent sting (Damnit! so used to soloing!), but I'd feel i'm pretty decent at using my pet to keep extra mobs off the healer, and keeping my cc'd mob cc'd. I also never feign fast enough.. the mob usually gets a hit off on me before i finally fd.
solo: I can't kite worth a damn, (only successfully kited the giant gorilla in STV), but I don't remember dying in pve for about 20 levels now.
PVP: boy, i suck. for some reason, alliance always come after me, now matter how far back in the crowd i am. I die so quickly. Only occasionally I don't get noticed and kill 2 or 3 in a row, but only if i get lucky.
My preiest on the other hand... likes to die.

Druid
-- 9/10[Resto] PvE/Raiding Endgame content
-- 3/10[Resto] BG/1v1 PvP
Shaman
-- 9/10[Resto] PvE/Raiding Pre-TBC (haven't done much since)
-- 7-8/10[Enhancement] BG PvP (6-10 1v1 PvP) (I was at rank 8 when patch 2.0 hit, and it took me about 3 weeks to get two HWL daggers)
Hunter (still a lowbie, but the toon I play the most now)
-- 10/10 PvE (I can easily solo 3 to 4 mobs of equal or 1 to 2 higher levels, and can solo equal level elites even if there's and equal level non-elite add)
-- 8-10 1v1 PvP (I haven't been in BGs yet) My best matchup was against a "skull" level rogue that unstealthed on me while I was questing... he beat me, but I was able to bring him to about 15% HP before he did. I've not been beaten by an equal level toon of any class, and I've beaten plenty of toons that were as much as 3 levels higher...including Locks and Pallys.
