Ask WoW Insider: Best way to get instance invites?
It's time for our weekly edition of Ask WoW Insider, wherein we publish one of your burning questions for the WoW Insider readers to answer. This week's question comes from David, who seeks advice on scoring an invite to an instance you haven't had any experience running yet: Ok, here's my question that I'm hoping gets a good response. For starters, I played WoW when it first came out and was a hunter then after getting to level 40ish I decided to reroll as a paladin and got to 50ish. Then I quit playing WoW until just recently with the newest Expansion. Any pointers on how to learn the new instances because it seems no one wants to invite someone that doesn't know the instance. Everytime, I try to get invited with my new character (neither paladin or hunter) I get kicked because I explain I just hit where I'm told and people don't seem to like that idea. Any pointers? Can you folks help an instance noob out? What are your tips and tricks for convincing a group you've got the goods despite not having seen the inside of the dungeon?
Got questions? Send them to Ask WoW Insider at ask AT wowinsider DOT com; every week we'll choose one to publish for your peers to answer.

Probably, I should have clarified my question a little bit. I play a priest now that Burning Crusade is out and the paladin and hunter hardly get played because I didn't feel like I got anything out of them. But, I feel like I should be honest with people and I tell them up front that, I've probably not done this instance before and any tips about what to do is helping i.e. where I should be looking out for patrols, what kind of environmental traps I should notice. Usually, I'll get kicked and get a whisper from the leader saying something along the lines of "we need an experienced healer" Well, how do I get experience if I haven't had the opportunity. *shrug* Thanks for all the good tips though.

WHAT IS WRONG WITH SOME OF YOU??? DONT EVER LIE ABOUT IT!!!
If I find out a noob is a noob and lied about it not only is he gonna get the boot and be added to my ignore list, I will also tell my whole guild about him and have them add him to the ignore list. Lying is NEVER the right thing to do.
HOWEVER...
If a noob is honest and says I have not ran this instance before i usually ask them about their spec and I also ask them what instances they have run if they seem knowledgeable enough about the game and about their class then i will bring them along "for the ride" and I am sure to let the rest of the group know that player x is new to the instance and take the time to explain the more difficult pulls in regard to their class.
#18 hit the nail on the head in every point. I could not have said it better myself.
the #1 thing that will make me boot someone from a group is not instance noobness but looting issues like a warrior rolling need on a staff or even a shield or weapon with int on it. #1 most important thing is to FOLLOW LOOTING RULES!!!!!!!!!!
thats it for me for now

I've never had a problem with my priest. Its either the combination of playing with others who don't care, or that I'm a priest and they will take what healing they can get. Now that I'm in outlands and focusing more on DPS as I'm shadow specced letting druids and paladins heal, I still haven't had any problems. Maybe if you sound like you don't know how to group...

I've never had this problem, ever, on two level 60+ hunters.
I've even volunteered that it's the first time doing an instance, and people just joke about it and go on. Why wouldn't you take a newbie? A good newbie learns quickly, and a bad veteran is crap no matter how many times they've done it.

Yeah: Don't group with dicks.

Reroll priest. Noone invites hunters to PUGs and there are way too many pallys around.

I play a mage and priest, lately, I've gotten more pug invites on my mage than my priest (guess DPS and CC are highly sought :) ).
Doesn't really matter if you don't know an instance. Trash is trash, pay attention and you'll learn quickly enough. Especially playing a priest since its a reactive class. We don't pull and typically don't take any proactive action. On bosses, I just ask if I should know anything.
On my mage, its 'sheep this', or 'here's your sheep target'. Otherwise its assist the MT or burn down the skull. A good grp will assign roles for each pull/boss so it doesn't really matter if you're new to an instance as long as you have a good leader.
PS: Just did Steamvaults, Botanica, Mechanar and Shattered Halls for the first time this week - 2 in pugs, 2 in guild runs - all successful playing my mage with this attitude.
