Live maintenance now semi-permanent
Hey, maybe I should complain about downtime more often. It looks like live maintenance is coming back for real, meaning mere rolling restarts on Tuesdays, but only every other week. This gives them the chance to do whatever it is they need to do when the servers are down, but minimizes downtime otherwise. This schedule will of course get disrupted whenever a substantial patch comes out, if it happens to come out on a "live" day, because they need to bring the realms down to apply the server-side patch. But the next week will reset to live maintenance again, and order will be restored. This is obviously good news, but I'm gonna sort of miss the downtime on "off" Tuesdays. It was nice to wake up, decide to play WoW, and not be able to, a bit. Still, kudos Blizz, and I'm glad this live thing worked out. Drysc's full post is after the cut.Every Tuesday all realms are brought down for scheduled weekly maintenance. This maintenance window is used to perform tasks on the realm databases and hardware, and to take care of any other tasks that would not normally be possible while the realms are live. In the past few months, however, we have been intermittently testing the ability to perform these maintenance tasks while the realms are still up and available to players.
Based on the positive results of these tests, we're happy to announce that we'll be switching to a new maintenance schedule that will only require us to bring down realms for maintenance every other week. On the weeks in which we don't take the realms down for maintenance, we'll only be issuing rolling restarts, allowing play to continue with only a very brief interruption.
An exception to this schedule will be for the release of patches that require realm downtime during weeks in which maintenance would not normally be scheduled. In such cases, the schedule will start over, with the following week being maintenance-free instead. This allows us to release a patch without having three straight weeks of maintenance downtime. Here's an example of how the maintenance schedule will look, factoring in all of the above:
Week 1: Rolling restarts
Week 2: Maintenance
Week 3: Patch and maintenance
Week 4: Rolling restarts
Week 5: Maintenance
Week 6: Rolling restarts
The new schedule takes effect immediately, starting with rolling restarts this Tuesday instead of full maintenance downtime. As previously, the schedule for the rolling restarts or full maintenance will be posted in the news window viewable at the game's login screen, and a 15-minute countdown timer will appear on each realm prior to its scheduled restart or downtime.

As an Australian player playing on an American server(they didn't have Oceania servers when I started) I must simply say w00t. No more getting hom on a tuesday night and playing for 18 minutes before getting kicked.

Well good and bad. I was using Tuesday morning to watch Heros from the night before (I work at night).
I'll have to start working on my WoW time management skills again.

I remember the first time I "called in sick" on a Tuesday and couldn't play WoW. I was pissed and told myself that I'm never allowed to be sick on Tuesdays during the day. Now I need to check the calender first.

I would really like to see 'behind the scenes' of how the back-end of WoW works. How many machines make up a realm? What is a 'World Server'? Battlegrounds? Instances? Are each of these on different machines? As a tech geek, I want to know!

@6 I just did that a month ago! Totally sucked having a sick day off work and not being able to play until around 1:30PM. At least I got some work done around the house...
